Through his 'Bring Back the Beach - Save the Seawall' campaign, hewants residents to help force the hand of authorities in developing aremedy - in the form of full rock groynes - once and for all. “We know that they worked perfectly in the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s untilthey stopped maintaining them,” Mr Slade said. “If we could put something permanent in that doesn’t need maintenance,that’s the answer.” The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP)recently sought feedback on six potential options for addressing the issue,including a possible breakwater. A lack of funding however means noworks will be undertaken in the foreseeable future. Instead, and despite mounting concerns for the future of the seawall,locals have been encouraged to participate in a long-term sand monitoringprogram. Mr Slade said a 2010 report, prepared for Queenscliff Council byengineers P.J. Yttrup, which recommended rebuilding the historic groynes,provided the common sense solution. Using Google Earth technology, he and fellow surfer Chris O’Dowdhave plotted the exact location of the former timber structures. Based on further professional advice, and the state of the existing threegroynes, the duo is lobbying for full rock replacements. “Of the existing groynes … the first and third are timber and rock andthe second is rock only. All three groynes were installed in 1999 and whenyou look at there second, it’s virtually bullet proof. Thousands descend for sell out Fest Wild weather failed to dampen the spirits of upwards of 17,000 Queenscliff Music Festival goers, with organisers hailing the event another massive success. Heavy rain and strong winds on the opening Friday night kept numbers down, played havoc with tents pitched on the recreation Reserve and kept maintenance crews on their toes, but patrons returned in numbers on Saturday and partied in Sunshine on Sunday. “Everything went really well from our end, fantastic music, great crowds and lots of happy people,” said Director Andrew Orvis. “Weather caused a bit of chaos when winds came through but our amazing crew worked around the clock to get everything ready in time. “There were lots of highlights and I’m sure they’re all different depending on who you ask, Mr Orvis said. “Kram playing a Spiderbait tune with Ali Barter, Casey Chambers singing with Grizzlee Train at The Brewhouse and the Horns of Leroy jumping up with the Black Sorrows and Vika and Linda.” The fest was a sell out for a second consecutive year.
