SALE ON NOW New season stock arriving... 4-6 Hesse Street Queenscliff Cottage By the Sea Fair stalls helped raises more than $71,000. 5258 1149 Community digs deep for Cottage kids One hundred volunteers and a crowd of upwards of 2,000 people have helped raise more than $71,000 for Queenscliff’s Cottage By The Sea. The charity's annual January fair once again proved a huge hit with locals and holiday-makers, with several waiting for the Cottage gates to open to bag a bargain. Management paid tribute to all involved, including Queenscliff Branch President Beverly Davies, who once again played a leading role in coordinating the event. “Mrs Davies has been volunteering at the Cottage for 20 years and is a key organiser of our Annual Fair,” a spokesperson said. “The Cottage has four dedicated branches that operate across Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula, raising money and awareness. All four contribute significantly to organising and running the Fair,” she said. Youth mental health push A new campaign has been launched to provide youth mental health services on the Bellarine. Bellarine Community Health is leading a push for a dedicated Headspace facility, amid a worrying increase in suicides and youth depression. Figures show there were 53 deaths to suicide within the Corangamite electorate between 2014 and 16. Headspace Geelong is currently providing a limited service from its Drysdale facility, but is calling for a dedicated Bellarine service to meet the region’s population growth. Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson said she was lobbying hard for a slice of $1.45 billion, recently announced by her government for support services through the Western Victoria Primary Healthcare Network (PHN). “With the population growth across the Bellarine Peninsula, a stand- alone headspace facility is required,” Ms Henderson said. “This is such a big issue. As a community, we must do all we can to combat mental illness.
