Welcome to 2016 Let's Get Motivated! Set Yourself a Challenge Each new year is a fresh start and will provide you with a great opportunity to try something new and push yourself into areas that test your capabilities as well as widen your horizons. If you fancy taking on something extra special this year, check out realbuzz.com’s 8 challenging yet rewarding things to do in order to get the most out of your year.4 // www.themis.ac.uk/careers // @themiscareers
Challenge 1: Run a marathon Many people regularly put running a marathon in their list ofthings to do, so why not make this the year that you actually do it? Completing a marathon is a greatpersonal achievement that requires months of dedication to training, and the exhilaration you’ll feelwhen crossing the line will certainly be something special.Challenge 2: Take on a charity challenge While a marathon may be a step (or 26.2miles!) too far for some people, there are many other challenges you could take on. There areplenty of charities out there who provide opportunities to go and do activities such as trekking, mountaineering, cycling and white water rafting in some exotic destinations. All that the charities askin return is that you raise at least the minimum specified sum of money. It’s a real win-win exchange:you will get the trip of a lifetime while your selected charity will receive much-needed funds.Challenge 3: Exercise your brain If you don’t feel like taking up a difficult physical challenge, then why not exercise your mind instead by doing something mentally challenging? You could dosomething such as learn to speak a new language. Challenging your mind is important, as it willkeep your mental faculties ticking over and expand your horizons.Challenge 4: Surprise yourself There are plenty of things out there that you see people doingand then say to yourself, ‘I could never do that’. But is there really a reason why you can’t do them,or are you just afraid of doing something new? The prospect of taking on some extreme activitiesmight scare the living daylights out of you, but there’s no reason to think you won’t be just as capableof taking them on as other people. If you achieve something that you previously thought you couldn’tdo, then the thrill of that moment will likely stay with you for a lifetime!Challenge 5: Volunteer yourself You could give a little of your time to help on a volunteerproject – however much or little time you have at your disposal. It could involve dedicating a smallamount of time to just helping with a local project on a regular basis. While you may think there’svery little impact you can make, giving up just a bit of your spare time to help other people will makea huge difference.Challenge 6: Overcome a fear We all have fears of some description. For example, you couldhave something as big as a fear of flying, which may prevent you from traveling abroad, or you couldhave a fear of spiders, which may just prevent you from taking a bath! Whatever your fear is, it’spossible to overcome it. We’re not suggesting that you just face them head-on and go and leap on aplane without any help whatsoever – but there are ways to tackle your particular problem.Challenge 7: Join a sports club Sports clubs are not all focused solely on competition – so ifyou just fancy giving something a try for fun as well as getting into the social side of the sport, thenmake that your goal. Even if you’re not that ‘sporty’, it’s likely there will be a sport out there that issuited to your ability and aptitude.Challenge 8: Get others up for a challenge If you’ve set yourself some personal challenges, then why not spread that message and let that enthusiasm rub off on others? Whatever your goals,it will be great if you can encourage other people to set their own. It may be that they can joinyou on some of the challenges that you have set yourself and this way you can act as a source ofencouragement to one another. If people see you setting yourself lots of goals, then that may promptthem to follow suit. So, make it your personal challenge to get others to set their own challenges!SO WHAT ARE YOU Send us a picture of the challenges you are setting yourself today.WAITING FOR? @themiscareers Themis We can’t wait to see! Parents’ Guide to Apprenticeships Apprenticeships have changed a lot over the past five years, so it’s not surprising that a lot of people are out of the loop. That’s why we’ve created this handy guide to help explain some of the finer points of Apprenticeships, as well as answer some of the most common questions we get asked by parents. 1. University Degrees are not the only route to a long and successful career. Going to university is undoubtedly a fantastic experience for any young student and of course, gaining a degree is a tried and tested way to get a foot on the career ladder. However, university isn’t for everyone and there are many young people who benefit from the structure and hands-on learning that Apprenticeships can offer. Advanced Apprenticeships can offer even more, giving Apprentices the qualifications, insider knowledge and real-life work experience to progress straight into their chosen careers. Our employers love being able to take on their Apprentices as full-time workers once they complete their programmes. Why wouldn’t they? These are hard-working individuals who they have got to know well over the course of their two, three or even four year programme. 2. Apprenticeships are opening up in industries you wouldn’t believe! Some of our most popular Apprenticeship programmes take place within the construction, engineering and health and social care industries, but these aren’t the only sectors which recognise the benefit of eager Apprentices being on-side. In 2015 more industries than ever opened their doors to Apprentices, with job roles for Journalists, Social Media Executives, Fashion Buyers, Software Engineers, Film and Media Apprentices and even useful multi-skilled roles like Sales and Customer Service Assistants.22 // www.themis.ac.uk/careers // @themiscareers
3. The days of low pay are long gone Employers these days know the worth of their Apprentices. They bring increased productivity and fresh new ideas with them, so most employers seek to reward them with higher pay than the Apprenticeship Minimum Wage. It’s a long-held opinion that the cost of university is vastly outweighed by the benefits of a degree, however with mounting debts and an insecure financial future repeatedly hitting the headlines, many young people are starting to prefer the idea of avoiding the cost with an Apprenticeship.4. Training is always tailored to suit the Apprenticeship Employers specifically tailor their training to suit with the demands of their job, so naturally this becomes invaluable on-the-job training every single day. Unlike training courses elsewhere, learning in this way helps Apprentices to understand exactly how things work within their chosen industry, building a deeper understanding of what will be expected of them once they progress into full time work. Of course there are off-site training sessions too, usually once a week, where Apprentices will cover topics in our industry training facilities to bolster their work experience with important theoretical knowledge. Apprentices learn the job inside out. Still have your reservations? Apprenticeships offer totally different opportunities to young people and it’s easy to get confused between their job and their training and qualifications. The beauty of Apprenticeships is that there is no line between work experience and learning. They go hand in hand, which our Apprentices really seem to love.
