38 PURE MICHIGAN METALIron Belly was formed in 2011, by Tim Cassidy and somefriends. Jim Doyle, joined in March 2012 as a vocalist. Short-ly thereafter, they found themselves without a guitar player, but wanting to trudge on. They made a collective decision, tokeep moving forward and work as a 3 piece band. Jim keptsinging, in addition to taking on the role of guitar player. Atthat time, Tim started singing as well, in addition to playingbass. Multi-instrumentalist, Jeremy Bussey, joined Iron Bellyin March 2014, as the drummer, keyboard player and 3rdvocalist. Jeremy, rounded out the current lineup and he alsohelps out with a lot of the bands visual artwork. Over thecourse of the last 2.5 years, Iron Belly has been playing showsall over Michigan and finding their “sound”. Speaking of theirsound, the most commonly used word that they hear, when Iron Bellydescribing how exactly they sound, is “different”. 3 vocalists, High Horse EPin a 3 piece band, where the drummer also plays keyboards, Release Date: November 5th, 2016is something that is completely different and they must beseen live, to fully understand! 39 Q&A with Iron BellyMMU: How did the band form and what inspired the band name?Jim: Tim started the band, before he and I had met. They were actually a cover band, when I joined. We ended up meetingthrough my cousin, Garnet Miller of Ink Addiction Tattoos and body Piercing, at the Motor City Auto Rama in Detroit, Mi.We were introduced and started talking about music and I ended up joining his band shortly thereafter. I joined as the singeroriginally and one day I brought my guitar over. The guitar player quit, so I kept playing and singing. Eventually the drum-mer quit and we found Jeremy, via Craigslist. The rest is history! The band name, came from the movie “Mountain Men”.There is an old, womanizing Indian Chief, named Iron Belly. Tim liked the name, so he used it to start the band.MMU: What is your writing process like?Jim: It varies. Sometimes one of us will bring a full song to the plate and show the others the vision. Other times, one of uswill bring different riffs to work on as a band. That way we can, as a team, determine how many times we are going to play acertain part.MMU: What bands or musicians have influenced your style?Tim: Deftones, Beatles, 80’s Hip Hop, Black Sabbath, Led Zepplin, Mastodon, COC, DownJim: Scott Kelly, John Baizley, Kurt Ballou, Chino Moreno, Phil Anselmo, Kirk Weinstein, Brent Hinds, Steve Austin, MikePatton, Dustin KensrueJeremy: Neal Peart, Dave Lomardo, John BonhamMMU: Do you have any pre-show or post-show rituals?Tim: Show up and look pretty!Jim: Stretching and warming up my voice. Lots of water. Smoke a joint.Jeremy: Shot of Jager to get in the zone.MMU: I noticed in a photo that bassist/vocalist Tim Cassidy uses a skateboard as a pedal board. How does that workout and why a skateboard?Tim: We’re both on wheels, so that works very well! If I drift too far away from it, I can tug on a cable and bring it back tome. The idea originally came, from not being able to afford a pedalboard, so I made my own! It also gets tons of attention, every time anyone sees it.MMU: It’s been over a year since your EP High Horse was released. Are there any plans on recording a full-length anytime soon?Jim: No full length, but we are currently working on our next EP. Our goal is to finish up this next batch of 7-8 songs andgo back to the studio again, in the spring. We’ve already reached out to Mike Hasty(Walls of Jericho) at Cloud City Studios,to let him know when we’ll be ready to visit him again. We recorded our first EP “High Horse”, with him in the summer of2016.MMU: If you could get any musician alive or dead to perform guest vocals or guest solo on your next album, who wouldbe your number one choice?Tim: We had our friend Ric Rage, sing on a few songs on the High Horse EP and it turned out great. On a future album, Iwould love to have Chino Moreno sing on it.
40Jim: Mike Patton for vocals. Brent Hinds for a guitar solo.Jeremy: Chris CornellMMU: What’s the funniest or strangest thing a fan in the audience has yelled out while you’re performing?Tim: For being a band of all guys, strangely enough, we’ve heard “Show us your tits!”MMU: What venue or city is your favorite to perform in and why?Tim: Blind Bob’s in Dayton, Oh! We had a great time there!Jim: Anywhere out of state is always a blast!MMU: Do you have a bucket list of venues or cities you want to perform at?Tim: St. Andrews/Shelter, Harpo’s and the Fillmore in Detroit. Red Rock in Colorado.Jim: I want to travel the country and see as many cities and states that I can, while I still can.:MMU: What about a bucket list of bands you want to perform with?Tim: Deftones, Neurosis, C.O.C., Black Sabbath, Down, Crowbar, Slipknot, Hatebreed, Walls of JerichoJim: Baroness, Deftones, Neurosis, Candiria, Fantomas, Thrice, GlassJawJeremy: C.O.C or Black SabbathMMU: Any favorite local bands that more people should check out?Tim: Absorbed, Augres, Sins of Hate, Jeremie Dean Yates Band, M-102, Hate Unbound, Tyrant, Krieg’s Legion, Ugly ButProud.Jim: Dragsaw, Reject the Silence, Euphoria, Pestilent Age, Two Neck Noose, Centenary, 1000 Foot Stare, Pick Axe Preacher,Blind Haven, the Worst Of, Imminent Sonic Destruction, Die Laughing and on and on…Jeremy: Busby Death Chair, Shameless Tramps, Resistance, Blue Collar Stompers.MMU: What occupies your time when not playing or writing music?Tim: After my family and my job, I spend a lot of time in the gym and I am passionate about movies.Jim: My family.MMU: How many times does it take for you to listen to a song that you love before you actually hate it instead? Whatabout a song that you hate before you start liking it?Tim: Once it hits main stream radio and gets overly played I start to hate it. It may takes years before I start to enjoy it again. Now that my 17 year old son is getting into metal some bands like Metallica and Pantera I’m starting to enjoy again.MMU: Last question. What do you hate or love the most about modern music?Tim: I’m kind of weird that I never like new music till after its been out for a long time. After the hype is over I can get intoit. Incubus is a great example. I could not get into them till the 3rd album came out and I realized what I had been missing.

48 4 Simple Steps for Effective SoundCloud Music Promotion By Sneha DasMusic is an integral part of our life and most of us are passionate about it. If you have planned to start out as a musician, youmust have spent all your time writing lyrics and composing the songs. But, if you want to spread your songs to a wide rangeof audiences in the world, you must know more than to create great tracks. The knowledge to efficiently market your tracksin the web world is imperative. It is also the shortest way to promote your sounds without shelling any money.SoundCloud is the number one platform for worldwide artists to gain recognition for their tunes. There are around millionsof users in this audio-streaming site that offers the chance for more exposure. A decade ago, music promotion was a hassle, but now it’s an easy task. In this audio-sharing site, you can easily gain as many followers and likes as you want to widespreadyour popularity. Many major musicians are also on SoundCloud due to its wide reach and influence. It is a great platform for them to con-struct great tracks and spread them. For effective music marketing, you must be able to identify your target audiences anddevelop your goal as a tunesmith. As we all know, the shortest way to promote your songs is to hire an agency or company, but if you’re doing it on your own, then you must follow these points.Mandatory Marketing Plan:It is rather important to develop a marketing plan as it is a guide that can help you attain your goals. With a plan you caneasily understand your next step, but without it, there is a high chance of losing focus and getting diverted from your goal. Therefore, it is compulsory to have a solid direction with an unwavering determination to promote your music on a competi-tive platform.Sharing is More than Caring:When it comes to music, all of us have shared our favorite songs with others. Likewise, sharing on SoundCloud is essentialto gain popularity and recognition in the massive music community. SoundCloud Music Promotion is the ultimate way topromote tracks and get more followers, reposts and downloads. Along with SoundCloud, you can further share it on otherpopular social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.Follow to become a Leader:Following is one of the best ways to get noticed. When you follow someone on SoundCloud, they are notified and most likelyto return the favor by following you back. Even if they don’t follow, they checkout your profile and like your tracks. However,it is important to ensure that you’re following people in the same music genre or style as you, so that they appreciate yourwork.
