44Hello! In the last issue, we covered the bitching and moaning that has become commonplace for a great deal ofself-entitled pricks in our local music scene. In reality this is a cultural problem with today’s youth in general, butfor our purposes, we’ll keep it limited to the music scene. Simply put, don’t expect any reward without putting in thework. Period. Now that we’re all feeling refreshed with our new go-getting, positive outlook; let’s see if we can applythat productive mentality to other areas of the scene. Haters, I’m talking to you. It’s time to knock it the fuck off.The notion of fans, and in particular, bands hating on other band’s music is not a new thing, so forgive me for justbeing fed up with it. Here’s the deal, in order to be a supporter of your scene, you are absolutetly not expected tolike every band’s music any more than bands can expect anyone who hears their music to like it. It’s unrealistic, andunreasonable. But trashing other people’s music either at a show, or on the internet is bad form. Music is the mostsubjective thing on the planet, so it’s worth keeping in mind that someone probably likes the band you’re talking shitabout. What possible good does hating other bands do? I’m talking about etiquitte here. Just because you only liketechnical progressive hydro-grind does not mean that all other genres of music are shit. Metal is metal guys.One thing that I keep seeing is bands hating on other band’s success. I don’t understand that. Ok, in your opinion,your band is better than this band that is more successful than yours. What are you basing this opinion on? Thething about all levels of success in the music world is that whatever success is acheived is going to be in direct cor-relation with the response they are getting from their fans. If you really believe you are somehow “better” than anyother band, cut out your pity party and ask yourself why that is? Maybe they have more fans than you do for a rea-son... Maybe they do a better job interacting with their fans? Maybe they have better merch designs? Maybe theyall worked second jobs so they could afford a better recording than yours? Maybe they play more shows in a largerregion? Maybe they have sacrificed more than you. Maybe, they WORK harder than you... I’ve grown very tired ofhearing things like “oh, well they knew so-and-so”, or “their manager got them in that battle to (whatever festival)”.Here’s the deal, bands have to capitalize on any and all opportunities that they can, because if they don’t, someoneelse will. But bottom line, if they don’t have something going on in their songs for people to connect with, noneof that matters. I say be happy for bands that are getting noticed. It’s not easy to get noticed as a small fish in a bigpond. Band’s have to get creative!! If you ever find yourself talking shit about a band that is doing better than yours,you should be asking yourself WHY they’re doing better. I can guarantee that you can learn something from them.Being a hater does not help you grow, and all you’re doing is getting people talking about the band you hate. Haha.Another point, who fucking cares? If you don’t like something, don’t listen to it. Fuck. What kind of asshole dislikesa piece of music so much that they will try to rally their friends into hating them together? This is the kind of thingwe see with racism, homophobia, and sexism. Persecuting a piece of art for no other reason than that you just don’tlike it is wrong. There’s this little elitist genre war going on in metal that makes me sick to my core. We all exist un-der this umbrella of “metal head”, and we all just need to accept that.Metal as a broad genre is not that big, and RARELY crosses over into the mainstream. So as badly as you may wantto separate the genres, we’re stuck with each other and must learn to coexist. Kinda like life in general, huh? For themost part, we’re occupying the same shows, like it or not. No one is saying you have to like everything you hear, butI AM saying that you should keep it to yourself or to your private circle. Trash talking in a public setting has no placein a community that preaches “brotherhood”, and almost always makes you look worse that who you’re talking shitabout. We’re in this together, and there’s strength in numbers. But this kind of crap divides us. In what world is that

45a good thing? I have a TON of friends in bands that I honestly do not care for. That’s not a stab at them, I just simplycannot relate to their music on a personal level. But I always try to go out of my way to recognize talent. Just becauseyou do not like something, does not mean that they are not good. I keep an eye out for passion. There’s nothing bet-ter than seeing a band who’s tight on stage and truly having fun up there performing. If you have that, and I’m stillnot digging the music, then it’s fair for me to assume that the reason I don’t like it is ME, NOT THEM. And that’sOK. There’s nothing wrong with that. There’s nothing wrong drawing the line at respect. I have nothing but respectfor what bands do. It’s a lot of hard work to get to those few minutes of the night we get to play. I wish people knewhow much work it is. So it seems to me that the purpose of these articles is to rant about the things that I see that I believe shouldchange. Ok, so be it. There’s is no reason to be a hater. Bands; everytime you hate on another band’s music, you’remaking yourself look bad and you’re wasting time not improving yourselves. After all, what other bands do hasabsolutely nothing to do with you. Fans; you have the luxory of never having to listen to a band you do not like. Sodon’t. It’s that simple. If you don’t like something, DON’T LISTEN TO IT! You’re time is much better spent discov-ering new excited artists, or supporting the ones that you already love. Support what you love, and disregard the rest.I can honestly say that rejection is not that tough a pill to swallow when you’re in a metal band. It’s not going to stopanyone.Quit yer bitchin’ and turn it up loud!! \m/
