Are any locals bands from those days still active todaythat you know of?MC: Honestly, I didn’t grt into local music til I started playing it. I was about 16. After that I fell in love with the rawemotion, pure talent, and dedication this Detroit scene has. It knocked the “big names” off their high horse in myeyes.MMU: Do you ever come across anyone who has no idea what underground music is? Do they look at you funnyand ask “what is underground music what does that mean? Cuz I it get a lot from random people.MC: Not really. The biggest misconception I get is that local or underground bands are just has been’s and never willbe’s. Which is the furthest thing from the truth. That’s when I had them a copy of the MI Metal Manifesto and withthe broad range of metal we hit on there it is bound to turn their head. EVERY band started as a local band,MMU: Michigan has so many talented heavy bands today. What local bands would you say are the most uniqueand original sounding?MC: None to me are “original” you hear their inspirations in all of them. Battlecross was the last MI band to reallystand out and take ownership of their genre. Localwise/Regional M102 is wearing the Detroit Thrash crown, It LiesWithin is owning Metalcore, there are so many subgenres that all meld together into an amazing scene.MMU: So, another compilation is on the way from Drozone correct? How’s that coming, are you still lookingfor bands to put on it? If there is a band out there reading this and wants on it what is the preferred method forthem to submit?MC: I have a few openings left. Only stipulations: be metal, be from Michigan, don’t suck, and be serious about yourcraft. Submit entries to [email protected] Do you want to be featured in MI Metal Underground? 57MMU: What was the defining moment in your life when you decided to become a part of the music scene andare either of you currently in any bands?DG: 10 years old heard Metallica and cliff burton...nuff said.JK: The defining moment for me would have been when I was four yrs old n found my dad’s copy of Powerage byACDC, put it in my little kiddy tape player and BLAM! I was hooked for life from the very first riff. It was cement-ed though when I won a copy of Pantera’s “3, Watch it Go” home video. I played that thing relelntlessly, I was aboutfifteen at the time and was just like “yeah, you see all those amps, and stacks of booze, and titties? That. That’s what Iwant to do with my life, right there” Haha.As far as actually deciding to become part of a scene, it’d be about ten years ago after I finished uni and moved toNottingham. It was a town I already knew well and had some connections in, and it had a really vibrant music sceneacross the whole spectrum of genres. I’d already been working on a band with Martin from fellow UMC buds Takenby the Tide in my last year at uni, so it seemed like the next logical step to cement ourselves into that scene when wemoved there.I play in Widows n we’ve been going for about 7 years now.MMU: With what seems to be an endless supply of local bands around the world, what outlets do you use findthe best in the superunknown?DG: Just going to venues and checking out...3 to 5 dollar shows...what’s to lose? I work silly hours so I can’t spend as much time as I’d like for new stuff these days, butsocial media is great for picking up new stuff and I’ve found some top bands that way. I pick up quite a lot fromUMC folks as well`. I tend to keep my eye on festival bills and tour supports for up and coming bands to see who’smaking a name for themselves too. Sleeping Shaman (based in the UK) is a great place to find out about anythingnasty, as is MetalMouth run by our very own Fox James.MMU: As a fan, when hearing a new unknown band for the first time, what draws you towards liking the band?DG: I like aggressive music...but the vocals are what either make me yeah or na...i don’t particularity care forscreaming vocals all the time. There is a time and place but not all the time. If i wanted to get yelled at all night long iwouldn’t go to a show is just stay home with the wife lol...4 hours agoJK: I like a band to sound solid`and tight. Good stage presence and a well put together set is important too. After all, you’re there to see a *show* right? But one thing`` that always makes me enjoy a show more, is when it looks like thepeople onstage are enjoying themselves too. The crowd feed off the ba``nd, which in turn feeds off the crowd and soon. I like it when the energy builds like that.MMU: With the UK having done a UMC all day showcase, are there any plans for a US showcase if one hasn’tbeen done already? Any future UMC tours being planned?DG: US is definitely on the horizon. 633 Classic Metal Record Companies You Should Check OutBy Jared A YoungThis article is just a quick intro to some great labels for getting into new bands through previous releases. Over theyears, I have researched countless bands and labels, helping me find tons of great music. Through this research, Ihave been able to complete a long introductory list of great labels for those who are new to different metal genres. This article will contain just a quick list for you to use before you really delve in. Use it as a tool to find new musicgenres you may not have heard before. Here are the 3 awesome metal record labels you should check out first:Metal BladeMetal Blade is a huge label that many metal heads have heard of, so if you haven’t checked out some of its bandsyet, what are you waiting for? This label contains a wide array of different metal genres and covers several decades. Here you’ll find some well known bands such as Amon Amarth, Behemoth, Pentagram, Merciful Fate or even highlycommercialized bands like Six Feet Under. No FashionBeginning as an underground label for many black metal acts that would go on to become well-known, No Fashionis a great place to look if you are looking to get into black/death metal or just classic “extreme” acts you haven’t got toyet. Some great bands include Dissection, Dark Funeral, Ablaze My Sorrow and Noctes. You’ll even find Katatonia’sfirst album from 1993 released by this company. This label is a particularly good place to find some lesser knownSwedish melodic black/death metal bands that have been passed over. One of which includes Vinterland, a one re-lease band, who put out a great debut.Overall, this record label is very small in total number of bands/albums released, but is a cool place to find some me-lodic “extreme” bands with a mid 90’s Swedish sound to many of them.SteamHammerLast, SteamHammer is a really great label that has put out many great bands of various genres. You may have heardof them after listening to some of Type O Negative’s newer material and seeing the label on the CD cover. Othergreat bands you should check out on this label include Iron Angel, Freedom Call, Sodom and Prong. Now that you know some great labels, dive in and enjoy! There are countless awesome bands out there and you willonly find them through hands-on research. For more record label discussion, band reviews and other miscellaneous music talk, check out my future article re-leases.Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/expert/Jared_A_Young/2181910Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/9164188
64Heavy Metal Band Styles - 18 Genres ExplainedBy William JakesHeavy Metal Bands erupted on the scene in the late 1970’s and since then have split into many sub-sets and styles. Each style carries its own variation with other styles mixed in. What we now call Traditional is usually a groupingof some of the original bands that were around before the genres split. Some examples of these groups include LedZeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Deep Purple.Heavy Metal StylesBlack - Originates from Speed metal, Thrash metal and hardcore punk in the early 1980’s. Black metal has had muchopposition from mainstream culture due to many of its bands having an anti-Christian worldview. Typical instru-ments include vocals, electric guitar, bass guitar and drums.Death - Originates from Thrash metal and early Black metal in the mid-1980’s. Uses heavily distorted guitars, blast-beat drumming, and deep growling vocals. Inspired by groups such as Slayer, Celtic Frost and Kreator.Doom - Originates from classic heavy metal, especially Black Sabbath albums of the early 1970’s. Uses slower temposand a much heavier and “thicker” sound. Lyrics tend to evoke a sense of dread, doom or despair.Drone - Became more popular in the early 1990’s. Drone metal melds Doom metal with the long duration tones ofdrone music.Folk - Developed in Europe in the mid 1990’s.
