SSRVM Magazine Bangalore East E August 2021 Teachers’ Corner Krishna Janmashtami Janmashtami is celebrated in many ways by fasting, singing, praying together, preparing and sharing special food, night vigils, and visiting Krishna or Vishnu temples. The major Krishna temples organize recitation of ''Bhagavata Purana and Bhagavad Gita. Krishna is the son of Devaki and Vasudeva Anakadundubhi, and his birthday is celebrated as Krishna Janmashtami, particularly those of the Gaudiya Vaishnavism tradition as he is considered the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Janmashtami is celebrated when Krishna is believed to have been born according to Hindu tradition. Krishna was born in Mathura, at midnight on the eighth day of Bhadrapada month. The birth of Krishna happened when there was a lot of chaos. It was a time when persecution was rampant, freedoms were denied, evil was everywhere, and when there was a threat to his life by his uncle King Kansa. Immediately after Krishna's birth at Mathura, his father Vasudeva Anakadundubhi took him across the Yamuna River, to his foster parents named Nanda and Yashoda in a place called Gokul. After Krishna's birth at midnight, the people celebrated his birthday in a very grand way. Statues of baby Krishna are washed and clothed, then placed in a cradle. The devotees then break their fast, by sharing food and sweets. Women draw tiny footprints outside their house doors walking towards kitchen, as a symbolism for Krishna's journey into their homes.
