["Kaliya\tSerpent Apoisonous\tsnake\tof\tgigantic\tsize\tnamed\tKaliya\tlived\tin\ta\tcavern\tat\tthe\tbottom of\triver\tYamuna.\tIt\thad\tpoisoned\tthe\twater\tand\tits\tpoisonous\tvapours\tthat\tkilled birds\t flying\t over\t it.\t Even\t the\t Kadam\t tress\t died\t due\t to\t its\t poisonous\t effect.\t No fish\t could\t live\t in\t that\t poisoned\t water\t and\t cows\t drinking\t the\t water\t would\t lie dead\ton\tthe\tbank\tof\tthe\triver. Sri\tKrishna\tnoticed\tthat\tthe\tmost\tvenomous\tsnake\thad\trendered\tthe\twater\tof\tthe Yamuna\t poisonous.\t He\t wanted\t to\t expel\t the\t serpent\t from\t the\t river\t in\t order\t to purify\tthe\twater.\tSri\tKrishna\ttightened\this\tgirdle,\tclimbed\ta\tlofty\tKadamba\ttree, and\t jumped\t into\t the\t pool\t of\t water.\t The\t waters\t sprayed\t and\t overflowed\t the banks.\tThe\tserpent\tfiercely\tattacked\tKrishna\tand\ttightened\thim\tin\tits\tcoil. The\t cows\t and\t the\t Gopa\t boys\t became\t scared.\t When\t Nanda,\t Yashoda\t and\t other Gopas\t came\t out,\t they\t saw\t him\t in\t the\t grasp\t of\t the\t powerful\t serpent\t and\t wept bitterly.\t Nanda\t wanted\t to\t jump\t in\t the\t river\t and\t save\t their\t son,\t but\t Balrama stopped\t from\t doing\t so\t as\t he\t knew\t Sri\t Krishna\t was\t no\t ordinary\t boy.\t He\t was God.\tSri\tKrishna\tseeing\teveryone\tworried\tshrunk\thimself\tand\tcame\tout\tfrom\tthe clutches\tof\tthe\tserpent.","When\t Kalia\t tried\t to\t bite\t Krishna\t he\t put\t his\t foot\t down\t on\t his\t hood,\t and\t when Kalia\t raised\t his\t other\t hood\t to\t strike\t Krishna\t he\t got\t upon\t its\t hoods\t and\t danced upon\tthem.\tIt\thad\tone\tthousand\thoods,\tand\teach\thood\thad\ta\tred\tstone\tembedded in\t them.\t Sri\t Krishna\t trampled\t down\t with\t his\t feet\t each\t one\t of\t the\t hoods.\t The body\tof\tthe\tserpent\twas\tshattered.\tThe\tserpent\tsought\tthe\tprotection\tof\tthe\tLord. The\twives\tof\tthe\tserpent\tpraised\tKrishna\tand\tprayed\tfor\ttheir\thusband\u2019s\tlife.\tThe Lord\tstopped\this\tdance.\tKaliya\tslowly\trecovered\tconsciousness. Krishna\tsaid,\t\u201cO\tserpent!\tDo\tnot\tstay\there\tany\tmore.\tGo\tto\tthe\tsea\timmediately with\t all\t your\t kinsmen\t and,\t wives.\t Let\t the\t water\t of\t the\t Yamuna\t be\t used\t by\t the cows\tand\tmen.\tI\tknow\tthat\tyou\tleft\tRamanaka\tisland\tfor\tyou\tfeared\tGaruda\tand came\t to\t live\t in\t this\t pool.\t But\t now,\t as\t your\t hoods\t bear\t the\t marks\t of\t my\t feet,","Garuda\t will\t not\t touch\t you.\u201d\t Thereupon\t Kaliya\t proceeded\t to\t the\t Ramanaka island\tin\tthe\tsea\twith\this\twives,\tfriends\tand\tchildren.\tThe\twaters\tof\tthe\tYamuna then\tturned\tas\tsweet\tas\tnectar. Kaliya\t used\t to\t live\t on\t the\t island\t of\t Ramanaka\t with\t other\t serpents\t .They\t made offerings\t in\t form\t of\t presents\t and\t sacrifices\t to\t Garuda\t (Lord\t Vishnu\u2019s\t carrier) who\talso\tlived\ton\tthe\tisland.\tKalia\twould\toften\teat\tthe\tpresents\tthat\twere\tmeant for\t Garuda.\t A\t fight\t took\t place\t and\t Kalia\t had\t come\t to\t live\t in\t the\t cavern\t in Yamuna.\tGaruda\tcould\tnot\tcome\tto\tthis\tcavern\tas\ta\tsage\thad\tgiven\ta\tcurse\tthat whoever\tcame\tcatch\tthe\tfish\tin\tcavern\twill\tdie.","","Pralambasura One\t day,\t Balarama,\t Krishna\t and\t other\t boys\t adorned\t themselves\t with\t red corals,\t tufts\t of\t peacock\t feathers,\t garlands\t and\t beautiful\t forest\t flowers\t and entered\tthe\tforest.\tSome\tbegan\tto\tdance,\twhile\tothers\tbegan\tsinging\tat\tthe\ttop\tof their\tvoice.\tThey\twere\tin\ta\tplayful\tmood.\tAn\tAsura\tnamed\tPralamba,\tdisguised himself\tas\ta\tGopa\tboy\tand\tmixed\twith\tthe\tother\tboys.\tHis\tintention\twas\tto\tcarry away\t both\t Balarama\t and\t Sri\t Krishna.\t The\t all-knowing\t Krishna\t found\t him\t out but\the\tpretended\tfriendship\tin\torder\tto\tkill\tthe\tAsura. Sri\t Krishna\t made\t a\t proposal\t to\t his\t friends.\t He\t said,\t \u201cO\t friends!\t Let\t us\t divide ourselves\t into\t two\t parties\t and\t play.\u201d\t Thereupon\t the\t boys\t divided\t themselves into\ttwo\tparties.\tSome\tchose\tto\tplay\tunder\tthe\tleadership\tof\tBalarama\tand\tothers under\tthe\tleadership\tof\tSri\tKrishna.\tThe\tdefeated\tparty\thad\tto\tcarry\tthe\tmembers of\tthe\tvictorious\tparty\ton\ttheir\tbacks\tto\ta\tcertain\tpoint.","In\t the\t course\t of\t the\t play,\t Sudama,\t Vrishabha\t and\t other\t boys\t belonging\t to Balrama\u2019s\t party\t gained\t victory.\t Therefore\t Sri\t Krishna\t carried\t Sudama, Bhadrasena\t carried\t Vrisha\t and\t Pralamba\t had\t to\t carry\t Balarama.\t Pralamba\t ran with\tBalarama\tbeyond\tthe\tmark.","Balarama\t suspected\t something\t evil.\t Pralamba\t resumed\t his\t own\t huge\t form. Balarama\thit\tthe\tAsura\ton\this\thead\twith\this\tstrong\tfist\tand\tsmashed\tthe\thead\tof the\tAsura.\tThe\tAsura\tvomited\tblood\tand\tfell\tdead.\tThe\tcowherd\tboys\twho\thad come\tto\thelp,\tlifted\tBalarama\ton\ttheir\tshoulders\tand\treturned\tsinging\this\tpraises.","","Govardhan\tpuja\tand\tLord\tIndra One\t day,\t Krishna\t observed\t that\t the\t people\t were\t preparing\t for\t the\t worship\t of Indra.\t He\t asked\t his\t father\t Nanda\t \u201cTell\t me,\t O\t father!\t What\t is\t this\t occasion\t for your\tgreat\tfestivity?\tBy\twhom\tand\thow\tis\tthe\tsacrifice\tto\tbe\tperformed?\u201d Nanda\treplied,\t\u201cMy\tbeloved\tchild!\tIndra\tis\tthe\tLord\tof\tthe\tclouds.\tHe\twill\tgive us\train\tby\tworshipping\thim.\tThe\trains\tgive\tlife\tto\tall\tbeings.\tThe\ttrees\tbear\tfruits and\tgreen\tgrass\tgrows\teverywhere.\tOur\tcows\tgraze\thappily\tand\twe\tlive\tbecause of\t our\t cows\t Therefore,\t people\t worship\t Indra\t by\t these\t returning\t to\t him\t as sacrifice\ta\tpart\tof\tthe\twealth.\u201d Krishna\treplied,\t\u201cO\tfather!\t\u201cOur\twealth\tand\tprosperity\tis\tdue\tto\tour\town\tactions. Where\t does\t Indra\t come\t in?\t If\t all\t we\t have\t to\t worship\t we\t should\t worship Govardhan\thill\twhich\tsustains\tus\tand\tour\tcattle.\tLets\tdogs\tbe\tproperly\tfed.\tLets the\tcows\tbe\tsupplied\twith\tfodder.\u201d Nanda\t and\t other\t Gopas\t did\t as\t Krishna\t said.\t The\t Gopas\t and\t Gopis\t dressed\t in their\t best\t clothes\t and\t carrying\t vessels\t of\t milk\t and\t ghee\t and\t curds\t began\t to worship\t Govardhan.\t They\t made\t offerings\t to\t the\t cows,\t to\t the\t Brahmins\t and\t to the\t hill\t Govardhan.\t Sri\t Krishna\t assumed\t another\t gigantic\t form\t and\t manifested himself\ton\tthe\ttop\tof\tthe\thill\tin\torder\tto\tconfirm\tthe\tfaith\tof\tthe\tGopas.\tHe\ttold the\t people\t that\t he\t was\t the\t deity\t presiding\t over\t the\t mountain.\t He\t then\t began\t to consume\tthe\tofferings\tthat\twere\tmade\tto\tthe\thill.","Indra,\t the\t lord\t of\t heaven\t became\t very\t angry\t when\t he\t saw\t that\t the\t sacrifices meant\tfor\thim\twere\tnow\tgiven\tto\tGovardhan.\tHe\twanted\tto\tteach\tthe\tpeople\tof vrindavan\t a\t lesson.\t He\t sent\t forth\t his\t clouds\t and\t winds.\t The\t thunder\t rolled\t and burst\t with\t a\t heavy\t downpour\t of\t rain.\t Continuous\t lights\t lit\t up\t the\t skies.\t House and\t haystacks\t were\t flying\t in\t the\t air.\t Hail\t stones\t pelted\t without\t mercy.\t The people\tof\tVrindavan\tcried,\t\u201cProtect\tus\tO\tKrishna\twe\ttake\trefuge\tin\tyou.\u201d","Krishna\t said,\t \u201cDo\t not\t be\t afraid\t enter\t this\t cave,\t all\t of\t you\t with\t your\t flock.\u201d\t So saying\tthis\the\tlifted\tthe\tmountain\tGovardhan\twith\ttrees\thigh\tabove\this\thead.\tThe people\t of\t Vrindavan\t with\t their\t cows\t took\t shelter\t beneath\t the\t mountain.\t There was\t continuous\t rain\t for\t seven\t days.\t Sri\t Krishna\t held\t up\t the\t hill\t for\t seven\t days continuously\t without\t moving\t an\t inch.\t Indra\t was\t quite\t amazed.\t His\t pride\t was destroyed.\tHe\twithdrew\tthe\tclouds\tand\twinds. The\t Gopas\t went\t to\t their\t own\t places\t with\t their\t cows\t and\t property.\t Sri\t Krishna set\tdown\tthe\tmountain\tin\tits\toriginal\tplace.\tThe\tGopas\twere\tstruck\twith\twonder. They\tcame\tto\tNanda\tand\tsaid,\t\u201cThis\tboy\tof\tseven\tyears\tuprooted\tthe\tGovardhan hill\t from\t the\t earth\t and\t held\t it\t up\t with\t one\t hand\t continuously\t for\t seven\t days. This\t marvellous\t feat\t cannot\t be\t done\t by\t an\t ordinary\t man.\t Your\t son\t is\t certainly the\t Lord\t of\t all\t Lords.\t He\t is\t the\t Atman\t of\t all\t beings.\u201dIndra\t and\t Surabhi\t came down\tfrom\tHeaven.\tIndra\tfell\tat\tthe\tfeet\tof\tSri\tKrishna\tand\tbegged\tforgiveness for\this\tmistake.\u201d","","Krishna\tin\tMathura When\t they\t entered\t the\t city\t of\t Mathura,\t it\t was\t evening.\t On\t the\t way\t at\t may places\tpeople\tof\tother\tvillages\tcame\tto\tmeet\tthem.\tNanda\tBaba\twas\twaiting\tfor them\t in\t Mathura.\t After\t reaching\t Mathura\t Sri\t Krishna\t asked\t Akura\t to\t go\t home taking\t the\t chariot\t .They\t wanted\t to\t get\t down\t and\t come\t after\t some\t time.\t Akura did\t not\t want\t to\t leave\t them\t and\t requested\t them\t to\t come\t to\t his\t home\t and\t take rest. They\t had\t heard\t about\t the\t great\t exploits\t of\t the\t two\t brothers\t and\t now\t wanted\t to see\tthem.\tAkura\tinvited\tthem\tto\this\thouse\tbut\tSri\tKrishna\tsaid,\tnot\ttoday\tAkura, we\t have\t to\t kill\t Kansa\t first\t and\t then\t we\t shall\t be\t able\t to\t enjoy\t your\t hospitality. Akura\tgave\tthe\tmessage\tof\ttheir\tarrival\tto\tKansa\tand\twent\thome. The\tnext\tday\tthey\tset\tout\twith\ttheir\tfriends\tto\tsee\tthe\tcity\tof\tMathura.\tThe\tcity was\t very\t beautiful\t .The\t houses\t had\t big\t doors\t made\t of\t gold\t and\t silver.\t They were\t beautifully\t decorated.\t There\t were\t gardens\t and\t well\t paved\t streets.\t The balconies\t and\t floors\t were\t studded\t with\t jewels.\t There\t were\t beautiful\t flowers\t in the\t gardens\t and\t strewn\t on\t streets\t in\t their\t welcome.\t The\t city\t showed\t grandeur. They\t saw\t ladies\t crowded\t on\t terraces\t and\t windows\t showering\t flowers\t on\t their arrival.","As\t they\t moved\t on\t they\t saw\t a\t washer-man\t approaching\t with\t his\t attendants carrying\t bundles\t of\t dyed\t clothes.\t Krishna\t called\t out,\t \u201cCan\t you\t give\t us\t some clothes.\tWe\twill\treward\tyou\u201d\tThe\twasher-man\tspoke\tto\tthem\tvery\trudely,\t\u201cYou are\tjunglees,\tdo\tyou\tknow\thow\tto\twear\tclothes?\tThese\tclothes\tare\tfor\tour\tKing Kansa\t.You\twill\tbe\tkilled\tso\tjust\trun\taway.\u201d On\thearing\tthese\twords\tKrishna\textended\this\tarm\tand\tknocked\this\thead\toff\t.The attendants\t ran\t away\t in\t fear\t leaving\t the\t bundles\t on\t ground.\t Krishna\t and\t his friends\tuntied\tthe\tbundles\ttook\tout\tthe\tclothes\twhich\twere\tbeautiful\tand\tcostly. Sri\t Krishna\t chose\t a\t gold\t coloured\t garment\t and\t Balarama\t a\t blue\t one\t and distributed\tthe\tremaining\tamong\this\tfriends.\tA\ttailor\tin\tthe\tcity\twas\tvery\thappy to\t sew\t the\t garments\t to\t their\t sizes.\t He\t was\t suitably\t rewarded\t for\t helping\t Sri","Krishna\tand\this\tfriends. They\t met\t a\t garland\t maker\t on\t their\t way.\t He\t was\t very\t happy\t to\t see\t Sri\t Krishna and\tBalarama\tand\tplaced\this\tbasket\tof\tgarlands\tin\tfront\tof\tthem.\tKrishna\tchose Vaijayanthmala\t and\t Balarama\t chose\t a\t garland\t of\t blue\t lotuses.\t The\t garland maker\twas\tgiven\ta\tdivine\tform,\tgood\thealth\tand\tlife\tlong\tprosperity\tin\treturn. They\t continued\t their\t journey\t in\t the\t town\t like\t conquerors.\t They\t saw\t a\t woman who\t had\t a\t beautiful\t face\t but\t bent\t on\t three\t sides\t in\t body\t limping.\t Sri\t Krishna said,\t \u201cO\t beautiful\t lady\t who\t are\t you\t and\t for\t whom\t are\t you\t carrying\t the sandalwood\t in\t your\t hand.\t If\t you\t give\t us\t this\t sweet\t smelling\t scent\t we\t will reward\t you.\t The\t woman\t looked\t at\t Sri\t Krishna\t and\t said\t \u201d\t O\t Beautiful\t I\t am carrying\t this\t sandalwood\t and\t other\t scents\t for\t Kansa\t but\t you\t both\t are\t more","deserving.\t I\t shall\t give\t them\t to\t you.\t Krishna\t was\t very\t happy\t with\t her\t affection and\t devotion.\t He\t decided\t to\t remove\t her\t bends\t and\t make\t her\t stand\t straight.\t So he\tpressed\this\ttoes\ton\ther\tfeet\tand\tlifted\ther\tchin\twith\this\ttwo\tfingers.\tAt\tonce her\t whole\t body\t straightened\t and\t she\t turned\t into\t a\t beautiful\t woman.\t She\t was very\thappy\tand\tpleaded\tthem\tto\tstop\tat\ther\thome.\tSri\tKrishna\tsaying,\t\u201cWe\thave other\tworks\tto\tcomplete\tbut\twe\twill\tcome.\u201d\tThen\the\tleft\ther\tand\twalked\tfurther with\this\tfriends.","Killing\tof\tKansa Krishna\t and\t his\t friends\t reached\t the\t place\t where\t the\t Dhanur\t Yagna\t was\t being performed\tby\tfollowing\tthe\tcrowd\twhich\twas\tcoming\tto\tworship\tthe\tbow.\tKansa had\t kept\t a\t Great\t Bow\t of\t Lord\t Shiva\t in\t a\t hall\t for\t public\t worship.\t They performed\t some\t rituals\t around\t the\t great\t bow\t and\t prayed\t with\t folded\t hands. Krishna\tthen\tlifted\tthe\tmighty\tbow\tand\tstringed\tit\tand\tpulled\tthe\tbow.\tThe\tstring broke\tin\ttwo\twith\ta\tloud\tnoise.\tThe\tsoldiers\twho\twere\tguarding\tthe\tbow\trushed with\ttheir\tweapons\ttowards\tSri\tKrishna.\tBut\tKrishna\tand\this\tfriends\teasily\tbeat them\tup.\tThe\tsoldiers\twanted\tto\ttie\tthem\tbut\tthey\tescaped\teasily.\tThey\tleft\tthis place\tand\twalked\ton\tseeing\tmore\tof\tthe\tcity. Next\t morning\t Kansa\t announced\t the\t wrestling\t march\t to\t begin.\t Citizens\t were welcomed\tand\twere\tseated\tin\t the\tgalleries\tin\tthe\tarena.\tKansa\ttook\this\tseat\tin the\thighest\tplace\tin\tthe\tarena.\tThe\tdrums\tstarted\tto\tbeat.\tThe\twrestlers\tof\tKansa Chanur,\t Mushtik,\t and\t others\t were\t already\t inside\t the\t arena\t ground.\t When\t Sri Krishna\t and\t Balarama\t were\t approaching\t the\t entrance\t of\t the\t arena\t they\t found\t a huge\t elephant\t by\t name\t Kuvalyapeedha\t along\t with\t his\t caretaker\t mahout blocking\ttheir\tway.\tThey\trequested\tthe\tmahout\tto\tgive\tway\tand\twhen\tnot\tagreed even\t threatened\t to\t kill\t him.\t The\t mahout\t was\t very\t angry\t and\t urged\t the\t tusker forward\t to\t kill\t Sri\t Krishna.\t Krishna\t was\t ready\t and\t he\t promptly\t stepped\t aside. The\t elephant\t immediately\t turned\t around\t and\t took\t Krishna\t on\t his\t trunk.\t Sri Krishna\teasily\tslipped\tdown\tand\tplaced\thimself\tunder\this\tbelly\tand\tcaught\tof\this tail.\tHe\tstarted\tpulling\tthe\ttail\tand\tdragging\tthe\telephant\tas\ta\tplayful\tchild\tdrags a\t calf\t for\t fun.\t Then\t he\t ran\t in\t front\t of\t the\t elephant\t and\t pretended\t to\t fall\t on\t the ground.\t The\t elephant\t which\t was\t running\t after\t Krishna\t pierced\t the\t ground\t with his\t tusks\t to\t kill\t him\t and\t could\t not\t pull\t out\t his\t tusks.\t Sri\t Krishna\t was\t quicker than\t him\t and\t already\t taken\t his\t trunk\t in\t his\t hand\t and\t gave\t him\t a\t mighty\t blow. The\t elephant\t fell\t down\t dead.\t Krishna\t pulled\t out\t the\t tusks\t dripped\t in\t blood. Krishna\tshouldered\tone\ttusk\tand\tBalarama\tthe\tother\tand\tthus\tarmed\tentered\tthe two\tbrothers\tin\tthe\twrestling\tarena.","People\tsitting\tthere\twere\tdelighted\tto\tsee\tsuch\tbrave\tyouth\tand\tprayed\tfor\ttheir well\tbeing.\tChanur\tand\tMushtik\twere\twaiting\tfor\tthem.\tChanur\tsaid,\t\u201cWe\thave heard\t that\t you\t are\t good\t wrestlers.\t Let\t us\t please\t the\t king\t Kansa\t as\t he\t is\t very fond\t of\t wresting\t sport.\t Krishna\t teasing\t him\t replied\t Chanur\t uncle\t we\t are\t too young\t to\t fight\t with\t you.\t You\t must\t fight\t with\t people\t of\t your\t age.\t Chanura retorted,\t\u201cHave\tyou\tnot\tjust\tkilled\ta\tmighty\telephant.\tDon\u2019t\tbe\ta\tcoward\tand\tlet us\t fight.\t The\t fight\t began\t and\t Chanura\t fought\t with\t Krishna\t and\t Mushtika\t with Balarama.","The\tladies\twho\thad\tcome\tto\twatch\tthe\twrestling\tfainted\tseeing\tthis\tunfair\tmatch. Vasudev\tand\tDevaki\twho\twere\talso\tpresent\tcould\tnot\tbear\tto\tsee\ttheir\tchildren fighting\t with\t the\t professional\t wrestlers.\t Suddenly\t they\t saw\t that\t Krishna\t and Balarama\t had\t laid\t their\t opponent\t on\t the\t ground\t and\t were\t on\t the\t top\t of\t them fisting\t very\t fiercely.\t Chanura\t and\t Mushtika\t could\t not\t take\t any\t more\t powerful blows.\tthey\tbegan\tto\tvomit\tblood\tand\trolled\tup\ttheir\teyes\tand\tlay\tdead.\tTwo\tof their\t brothers\t came\t in\t to\t fight\t but\t Sri\t Krishna\t and\t Balarama\t killed\t them\t too.
