Autumn/Winter 2019 Issue 42 Award for Uniting the Village Llanteg Village Hall won the Pride in Pembrokeshire Award in July. With an active committee of around a dozen people, the hall is the focal point of community activities. The award is presented monthly to a voluntary group whose work has made a real difference to local people and communities. The award is a partnership between the Pembrokeshire Public Services Board (PSB) and the Western Telegraph – with each winning entry awarded £200. The judges were particularly impressed with the group‟s commitment to community-led volunteering and commented: „It is clear that Llanteg village hall makes a substantial contribution to improving the well -being of individuals, and indeed towards the well-being of the County as a whole.’ Jo Cox Get-together and History Exhibition One of our community events was the 20 Year History Exhibition and Jo Cox Get-together that we held in June. There were lots of display boards of photographs as well as old maps, censuses, village scrapbooks and much more. As well as history items, we also had our usual free tea and cakes, which is part of our Jo Cox community get-together - this being our third year of holding this event, which has now become an annual feature. It was good to see some new faces from further afield who turned up as they had ancestors from the village, and also our regulars who enjoy coming to just catch up with neighbours.

3 TRIBUTES TO... Sue James 831468 [email protected] Horace Arthur Lake, Awel Y Mor Passed away 9th May 2019, aged 89 years Horace was born and lived in Walsall, West Midlands. He was altar server at St. John‟s Church where at 17yrs of age he met (his wife to be) Freda. At 18 he was called up for National Service spent in Egypt where he was attached to the North Staffordshire Regiment, in the band, where he had the honour of playing for King Farouk, the last King of Egypt. At the end of his service he was offered a scholarship to Kneller Hall. He was employed at John Harper Founders for ten years before moving to the Midlands Electricity Board as Disconnections Officer in the Metering Department, where he was known as “Snips”. Horace had a number of interests in life. He enjoyed a game of snooker, and liked wood working, spending many an hour in his workshop creating something useful. He loved to follow his son Robert in the Powerboat racing. Music was also very high on his list of pleasures and he did enjoy his ballroom dancing. Holidays too were important to him, and for many years we visited Laugharne with our caravan, besides travelling abroad to see other countries. Horace was happy to have seen so much of the world. At 69yrs of age he had to have heart surgery and was told he needed fresh air to breathe, so we came here to live. He always said he could not have chosen better. Only a few days before he passed away he said “We have had a good life, haven’t we”. Freda and Robert and partner Jan wish to express sincere thanks to all family, friends and neighbours for the kindness and sympathy shown in our recent very sad loss. Horace was a lovely man, much loved and is so very much missed. He always said how privileged he felt to be living here. Thank you for the numerous cards, letters, messages, flowers and donations to the British Heart Foundation. Our heartfelt thanks to all those who attended the service at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, and afterwards at Plas Hyfryd Hotel. Your presence was greatly appreciated. Special thanks to Father Paul Boyle for conducting the service, and to Helen (Horace‟s niece) for her kind words and reading. We wish to convey our sincere gratitude to E.C.Thomas & Son, Funeral Directors, for all their help, support and kindness, and for their dignified and respectful professionalism in the way they carried out the funeral arrangements. Thank you to you all. Freda Lake
4 Nathan Adey, 1 Chapel Lane Nathan was born in Sunderland in 1947 where he spent his childhood. Leaving school at 15, he joined the Boys Army in Bury St.Edmunds, where he gained his D of E awards. At 17 he joined the Royal Anglian Regiment (infantry). Nathan met Glen in 1965. They were married in 1967 and had two sons. During his service, postings included six years in Germany and two years in Cyprus, with several postings in the UK. On leaving the Army in 1979, where he held the rank of WO2, he set up a security company in Leicester. After 19 years this was sold and Nathan and Glen decided to buy an Inn in Devon, which had 12 miles of fishing rights, fishing being one of Nathan‟s favourite pastimes. They moved to Llanteg in 2008, and despite a worldwide search for a home, they knew as soon as they found 1 Chapel Lane this was where they wanted to settle. Nathan also enjoyed walking, gardening and reading, and he and Glen spent a very happy life together, but sadly Nathan passed away on 24th May 2019. Our condolences go out to Glen and family. Donald Frederick Terry, aged 95, Llanteg Park Born on a Kentish smallholding, Don had worked in computing his whole career. He retired to Pentlepoir with his beloved wife Marian from 2002 until her death in 2011. She pursued watercolour painting classes, he grew wonderful tomatoes and cucumbers and together they swam at the Over 55's club in Narberth. Two years ago, too frail to be so far away from help and support, Don moved into the house at the bottom of our garden and spent his last years quietly at Llanteg Park. Here he reminisced about family history, about how much he missed Marian and occasionally, if you were lucky, about his war service as one of the engineers who kept the “bombe machines” of the Bletchley Park code breaking project running. Don was a quiet and reserved man, but he had a wicked sense of fun. The last few months he had been attending daycare sessions at Tenby where his great joy was to sing, particularly the popular songs his mother had sung to him as a child. He will be fondly remembered and sorely missed. Viv Loveday Louis Embra, Red Gables Died September 2019 aged 91. Lou had a varied and interesting life. Half Italian and half British, he was trapped in Italy at the outbreak of WW2 whilst on holiday with his Italian grandparents, and so spent the next couple of years with them, under Nazi occupation. At the age of 15 he escaped with the Red Cross via Portugal, to get home to Bury, Lancashire. He joined the army at the end of the war and it was whilst in the military police that he met his beloved Mary.
5 Lou had a variety of jobs in his lifetime, including working down the mines, becoming one of the first UK manufacturers of upvc windows, and running a campsite on the Isle of Skye. Lou was an extremely talented gardener, and a wonderful cook. He and Mary moved to Llanteg in 2014 to live with their family. Mary was unwell in her last few years and was cared for faithfully and devotedly by Lou. He was an amazing man, and is greatly missed. LLANTEG HISTORY SOCIETY Ruth Roberts 831298 [email protected] The End of an Era 1999-2019 We held our „Celebrating 20 Years‟ exhibition in June alongside the Jo Cox Get-together and it was lovely to see so much continued interest in the material we had collected. It was with sadness that we finally decided at our AGM in June to wind up the society, which held its last meeting on 17th September. Four of the founder members at the The society began with a good core back in 1999, exhibition: but over the years we have lost several members John Lewis-Tunster (Treasurer), Margaret & Tony Brinsden (Chairman) and it was difficult to carry on with so few and Ruth Roberts (Secretary). attending meetings.
9 As per our constitution, our remaining funds and books go to Llanteg Hall. Tony Brinsden commented that he was proud to have been associated with the Society from its beginnings. We had lost many members over the years, through death, infirmity and some moving away. Tony thanked past member Judith Lloyd who was so instrumental with our book compiling and Ruth & Andy Webb who took such an active role before moving away. For a small village we are gratified to have collected so much of its history. Research papers and photographs will still be held in the village and the books will still be available for sale. Ruth will also still keep the history blogs going so no online information will be lost. We extend much thanks to everyone who has contributed items, photographs, reminiscences or local knowledge over the years - we could not have done it without your help. Our six books, five booklets and various exhibitions are testament to the community involvement. Any Llanteg related items or information will still be gratefully received. Llanteg Poppies It is with regret that Margaret and I have had no communication from the Royal British Legion Poppy sales people this year so were unable to come around to your doors with the Poppies. It seems odd to me that they can just ignore the large sums that we were able to collect, thanks to your generosity, but that is now their problem. May we thank you again for generous donations over the years that we have been collecting, and encourage you to still support this worthy cause. Sincere thanks Margaret and Tony Brinsden, Norton Lodge The Hall Committee and village residents would like to thank Margaret and Tony Brinsden for their commitment to collecting door to door for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal over many years (Margaret 20 and Tony 18). This has been a laborious task with such a scattered community, but they have mostly raised between four and five hundred pounds each year. Figures going back to 2008 show over £5,218 being raised for just 11 years, which is a marvellous achievement. It is sad therefore that this year things have fallen apart, with no response coming from the Royal British Legion. However, we would like to voice our appreciation of Margaret & Tony‟s dedication over the years, and also that of their predecessors, who have also worked hard for this worthwhile cause. We also agreed to adopt Marros beach to clean of plastic litter and had two well attended events there in June and September. Amroth Coast path January - Quiz Night, Wildlife and Gardening group. this summer February - Evening meal. LLANTEG GARDENING GROUP Roy James 831468 [email protected] A year ago we started our Gardening Group. The main objective was to learn more about growing vegetables, fruit trees, flowers, creating a healthy vibrant garden. To be honest, I had very little knowledge of gardening, having never taken much notice in the past, much to my regret now, since my late father was an accomplished gardener. Luckily, others within our Gardening Group have gardening experience and are only too willing to share their knowledge. This theme of helping each other has been the main focus this year. At the outset, the Gardening Group meeting decided they didn't wish to create a gardening club, believing they didn't want anything formal, and this has remained their opinion up to the present date. During this last year we have visited a number of gardens, and had a few guest speakers at the village hall, along with the odd practical training session. As far as the garden visits are concerned, we've always included a walk and talk session, which has made the visits more interesting and given us all loads of ideas. Additionally, we've had a few guest speakers at the village hall, providing talks on subjects such as; Meadow Flowers (Carmarthenshire Meadows Group), Permaculture (Caz and Nimh), Question & Answer session with Paul Webb (Tavernspite Garden Centre). Last summer we had three fund raising events: thanks to Polly, Roger, Jane, Ken and Pauline for opening up their gardens and raising money in aid of our Gardening Group. These funds, along with the membership fee, have facilitated the opportunity to invite a number of guest speakers in the coming months, all of whom I'm sure will be enjoyed by those who attend.
13 In the coming winter months, we have some very interesting and experienced guest speakers from; Aberglasney, Abergwili, Colby Gardens, Llwyngarreg and Huwsnursery, whilst in the summer we are planning visits to some of the following venues: Aberglasney, Abergwili, Picton Castle, Colby Lodge, Upton Castle, Stackpole Walled Garden, Llwyngarreg and Botanical Garden. Its worth noting that we charge a £2 entrance fee for our meetings (talks) and if anyone is interested in joining the Gardening Group, then contact Roy James on [email protected] If you „like‟ the „Llanteg Village’ Facebook page you will have updates of any Llanteg news and it is a quick way to keep in touch. 14 THE BADGERS SHORT MAT BOWLS Neville Ruff 812605[email protected] Meet on Tuesdays & Fridays 7.00 pm at Llanteg Hall The Pembrokeshire short mat bowls season is only into its first couple of months. In the main league we are mid table, and in the Presidents in the top three. The 12th and 13th of October saw the Inter Team Challenge between the best county teams of England, Ireland and Wales, held at Heatherton Sports Park. Pembrokeshire has been the top Welsh county team for a number of years but has never won the Inter County. This year we had a very strong team and every one of them performed to their very best, which they had to do. It came down to the final Rink game between Mid Tyrone and Pembrokeshire late on Sunday afternoon. With the Pembrokeshire team producing first class bowls they won the match, which confirmed that, for the first time, Pembrokeshire are Inter County Team Challenge Winners, a fantastic result. LLANTEG SHORT MAT BOWLS Sally Watts 831359 [email protected] Meet on Mondays & Thursdays 7.00 pm at Llanteg Hall After a successful League win, Llanteg Short Mat Bowls Club hosted their second Chairman‟s Challenge on July 25th. It was a very enjoyable evening, well supported, with 40 people attending, including players. This year Llanteg won the Challenge. We then had a break until the start of League matches at the beginning of September. We have, so far, played and won three games and look forward to the rest of the season, which ends in April 2020. If anyone would like to try short mat bowls, we always welcome new players. We play Monday and Thursday evenings from 7.00pm to 9.30pm, at Llanteg Hall. 15 TAVERNSPITE SCHOOL NEWS Headteacher - Kevin Phelps School - 01834 831691 [email protected] tavernspiteschool.co.uk Tavernspite School continues to fly high in terms of the quality of education it provides to its pupils. The school is still a Welsh Government categorised „GREEN‟ school, which means that it has very high standards across the board. This accolade also means that the school has the capacity to support and improve other schools across Wales and does so on a regular basis. The school, which has been recognised by ESTYN as providing best practice, often plays host to visiting teachers from others schools to learn about the approach taken at Tavernspite. That is obviously quite a compliment. Tavernspite School is well known for its sporting reputation. In the summer term we had the memorable experience of welcoming Kathy Williams to both Tavernspite and Templeton Schools. Kathy, daughter of John and Hazel James, Hafod Haf, Llanteg, is the Games Manager for Commonwealth Games Wales. She delivered brilliant and inspiring assemblies. This was followed by sport sessions on the school field led by members of the Welsh Commonwealth rugby team. Continuing with sport, our annual Colby Woodland Garden School Fun Run had a fantastic turn out again with over 150 children/adults taking part in the various races. Our cross country team competed this year for the first time in the West Wales Cross Country League, there were amazing performances from Llanteg brothers, Ieuan and Deri Richards, who were the winners of both their races. The athletics team competed in the Pembrokeshire Primary Schools Athletics champions and the girls‟ cricket team travelled to the Swalec Stadium in Cardiff to compete in the Welsh Championships. They were representing Pembrokeshire and played brilliantly. They reached the semi-final, it was incredibly close and went down to the very last ball, with our girls narrowly missing out on a place in the final. In June we hosted the sixth Fairtrade Football World Cup in which all matches are played with Fairtrade footballs and the teams represent Fairtrade countries across the world. We welcomed numerous schools from across Pembrokeshire who enjoyed some excellent football matches in this very exciting „World Cup‟ tournament. The summer term ended with excitement as the oldest pupils enjoyed a fantastic 3 day residential trip to Cardiff Bay. The children enjoyed wonderful outings including trips to Big Pit, the Royal Mint, Principality Stadium, open top bus tour of Cardiff, Techniquest, Cardiff International Pool and a speed boat ride around Cardiff Bay. On their return, the pupils travelled across to Skomer Island to see the puffins up close as they brought sand eels to their young in their burrows alongside the path. A few weeks later we said goodbye to our Year 6 leavers with 30 pupils embarking for secondary school education. They performed one last time at their Leavers‟ Assembly and really entertained the audience with a fabulous leavers‟ assembly. Thank you for taking the time to read our school news! 16 STEPASIDE SCHOOL NEWS Headteacher - Paul Harries School - 01834 812764 [email protected] www.stepasideschool.co.uk We finished the Summer term on a high at Stepaside CP School as our match funding target of £1000 was reached and our anonymous donor was delighted to add their £1000 to the pot. We would like to thank all of our pupils, families and staff for their efforts to make this goal a reality. The purpose of the fundraising was to update and develop our outdoor areas for our younger pupils. During the summer term many pupils were involved in classes with Springboard workshops. These classes are designed to help parents and children learn together. One of the groups of parents and pupils designed and produced a fabulous mosaic sign for the school. After a well deserved summer break the pupils returned to school and have settled very well into a pattern of hard work. We welcomed many new families to the school community and they are all enjoying their experience with us. Pupils have been able to make use of our new suite of computers in their studies as their topics range from the Gruffalo to Space! We have a very active school council group who have been organising events for this term, including a school disco and a pumpkin carving competition. We are very grateful to all of the local businesses that have supported their efforts. Swimming sessions have commenced and cycle training is underway and the first of the season‟s football tournaments are booked. Nursery and Reception pupils have been enjoying their surroundings on „Welly Wednesday‟ each week and the Year 1, 2 and 3 pupils have been exploring the woodland in their forest school activities. We are looking forward to some exciting visits and visitors as the term progresses, these include a percussion workshop, a trip to the cinema and a whole school visit to the theatre. If you would like any more information on our activities at the school or feel you can support us in anyway please contact Mr Paul Harries, Headteacher on 01834 812764. 17 LLANTEG LITERATI Mary Megarry 01834 811510 [email protected] As the weather turns wintry, it really is the time to curl up with a good book and Llanteg Literati will certainly be doing that. The Village Reading Group continues to thrive with 15 members, ensuring a good turnout of at least 10 to our monthly meetings. As each member takes it in turn to choose the book to be read, our titles are varied and reflect the tastes of the individuals, making for lively discussion. Titles read recently include the first Inspector Montalbano novel The Shape of Water, Pay It Forward, The Hippopotamus by Stephen Fry and the Salt Path. The latter was our second non-fiction book, which is good for a Reading Group as so often it is only novels that get chosen. Discussion is always lively as we all get something different from each title – the adage being No Two People Read The Same Book. Anyone listening to us could vouch for that! A plus for members is being introduced to the first in a series of novels and some have then gone on to read further. This has happened with the Chronicles of St Mary’s series after Ruth chose the first one and earlier series by Simon Scarrow about a Roman Centurion. Members also share ideas for books others may enjoy. It is the variety of titles chosen, but also the reasons for the choice and, of course, the company. There are then spin off book related events, such as some going off to the Hay Festival, Paperback Breakfasts at Narberth Museum and cinema outings to see adaptations of books made into films. We continue to meet monthly – usually on a Tuesday – at the Wanderer‟s Rest courtesy of the ever hospitable Jeni. CRUNWERE CREATIVE ART GROUP Patricia Phillips831497 [email protected] The art classes are still held on the second and fourth Mondays in Llanteg Hall, from 10-12noon. During the summer we decided to work towards entering Ludchurch Show, which was held in Llanteg Hall in August. We were delighted to win all the art prizes in the three categories; a pencil sketch of a watering can, a coastal watercolour and an acrylic jug of flowers. We had a small display of our work at the Craft Day in September, and also have two display boards of our current work up in the Village Hall. If anyone would like to join us, please do pop in. We work in any medium and, although we often have monthly themes, such as Autumn, you are most welcome to work on anything you choose. Not classes as such, but we all bring along our own work and share ideas. Some have only been painting since December, so do not feel that we are all experts! We also have a cuppa and a chat during the morning so it is quite laid back and relaxed.
18 ST ELIDYR’S CHURCH, AMROTH Val Beynon 813091 [email protected] I thought that everyone living in our Parish area would like to have an update on the local Church and graveyards. First, we have decided to release some of our money to smarten up the nave and chancel of St Elidyrs. We sought permission to do this from the Diocese despite the need identified at the last inspection to carry out remedial work on the church tower. This will mean that those who regularly attend worship in the church will not have to look at crumbling walls, and that the church will be a much nicer place to hold those special family occasions. We had also warned of the possibility of the Amroth graveyard being closed to future interments when the current area becomes full. I am delighted to say that with a lot of hard work, the good will of some local people and specialist firms we are going to be able to extend the current graveyard to accommodate a further 90 graves. The Amroth PCC has supported us with the planning that has been necessary. We have already removed one dead ash tree on safety grounds and over the next six months will need to carry out further tree work. We will be treating the Japanese knotweed again and this area will be fenced off from the extended graveyard. I know that many of us remain concerned about the old Crunwere graveyard. The disposal of the building is the responsibility of the Church in Wales, based in Cardiff. Due to its location and lack of amenities, this has proved to be highly problematic. A new person has been appointed in Cardiff to see if the issue can be resolved and I will be meeting with him, the land agent and other key parties shortly. Whilst I am not certain how the issues will be resolved, the PCC remains determined to maintain and keep open the graveyard in the longer term. We have decided to spend the minimum amount of money on its upkeep until we have a clear way forward. There is, I am afraid, no quick fix. I would urge all living in the Parish to help support us: Sat 16th November at Amroth Arms 10:30 to 12:30. Coffee morning & stalls. Fri 20th December – Carol Service at Amroth Church, 6pm, followed by a mince pie and a warming drink at Heatherland. 19 LLANTEG NATURE RAMBLINGS Kevin Caley [email protected] Those of you following conservation news must have heard about the most recent publication produced jointly by the various NGOs and Government organisations; that is, the 'State of Nature UK, 2019'. It makes sombre reading. There has been no let up in the loss of nature from across the UK since recording began, reflecting a similar decline that is planet-wide. In part, these declines are due to climate change, but they are also due to more local habitat and biodiversity loss. Intensification of farming practices is highlighted as one of the most damaging factors. In the UK, for instance, 90% of seminatural grasslands have been lost since the 1930s. The report also highlights the plight of various groups, including a 52% decline in butterfly populations in Wales since recording of this group began in 1976, with some, such as the High Brown Fritillary and Grayling, seeing a 75% decline, due to their more specialist requirements. Across Wales, 3,902 of our 50,000 + species of animal, plant and fungus are monitored as indicators of general trends. Of these, 73 species are now extinct within Wales' borders, whilst another 666 species are at risk of becoming extinct here in the near future. It's not completely doom and gloom, with, among the birds, ospreys and red kites bouncing back. What is also apparent is that we can all help in protecting our local natural heritage, no matter how small the garden. There are many things that the individual can do, from letting the grass grow a little longer on our verges and allowing the associated wildflowers to bloom to help local pollinators, to including a bird table or insect hotel in the corner of a border. You might have a part of your garden that you think is messy, but a hollow broken stem to you is a prime wintering site for some insect - a creature that may actually be protecting your plants from other, less desirable, insects. Adding a pond is probably the best thing you could do. Not only will it be a focus for wildlife, but it is especially useful at attracting frogs and toads. In turn, these amphibians can help substantially in controlling slugs living in the „wrong place‟ (as far as gardeners are concerned), and make the need for wildlife- damaging molluscicides redundant. You could add a log or stone pile somewhere as a feature, as this doubles up as a winter residence for a huge variety of creatures, including the frogs and toads. Finally, think about the plants you buy next time you are at the garden centre. Instead of buying that blousy double-flowered bedding plant, choose a single-flowered type instead. The latter secretes nectar, which the former doesn‟t - it can‟t. Because of this, the double-flowered plant does not help you look after pollinators. I realise that there are still dinosaurs out there who say they are not interested in conservation, but, fortunately, their numbers are declining too. Be mindful of what you do in the garden, and you‟ll be surprised at what you can achieve. 21 AMROTH WARD COUNTY COUNCILLOR Tony Baron 831677 [email protected] Congratulations to Mr Mark Harvey, who on behalf of Amroth Community Council, has successfully applied for a grant under the Enhancing Pembrokeshire Grant Scheme. Mark‟s project „Amroth Heritage Trail‟ will provide a fitting commemoration of the part played by the Amroth Community in the preparations for the D-Day Landings. In particular, „Exercise Jantzen‟ will be detailed on an interpretive panel. The grant will amount to £2,436. I understand that, while unused allocations of funds under the Enhancing Pembrokeshire Scheme were rolled over from 2018-19 into 2019-20, there will be no further rollovers. Instead any funds not utilised by the Ward will be amalgamated into a general pot for the County. Given the number of second homes in Amroth, the annual amount allocated to our Ward is about £20,000. Applications can be made by any community group and I am happy to help with any project. There is also a small amount of funding left unallocated in Pembrokeshire‟s share of the EU LEADER funds. The Local Action Group (LAG) is likely to try to spread those funds over a large number of small projects and it could be that the amount of the required match funding will be less than the 30% that has been required up to now. I am very pleased to note that Bertie the Sea Bass, largely paid for by LEADER funding, has gone international. Bertie was exhibited in Dublin at the British Ambassador‟s summer reception at his request. I have been appointed to the Council‟s Finance Panel and also sit on the Treasury Management Panel. The first Council Members‟ Budget Seminar, which will help determine the Council‟s Medium Term Financial Plan, took place on Monday 23 September. There remains much uncertainty, for example, over whether the UK Chancellor‟s public spending increases will actually be passed. And whether, if they are, the implied increase in Welsh funding will be passed on in its entirety by the Welsh Government. Nevertheless, the financial position of the Council, while tight, is not as perilous as in previous years. I detect no appetite amongst Council Members for an increase in Council Tax above 5% and strong opposition to a 10% increase. This year I have received a significant number of complaints about the impact of the Long Course Weekend and the Ironman events, which, while benefitting Pembrokeshire as a whole, do have a significant impact on Amroth residents and our seafront businesses. I am liaising with Cabinet Member Cllr. Baker to seek an improvement in the road closure regime. In particular, consideration is being given to compressing road closure times, to part-closed, part-open roads and to perhaps varying routes. I have also received a very large volume of correspondence objecting to a planning application to greatly extend the Heritage Park in Pleasant Valley. I am sympathetic to the view that the proposed plans represent an overdevelopment, which will adversely impact on local residents and their well-being despite the employment benefits of the scheme.
