He was then invalided back to Canada on the We have found that he enlisted in Canada: John Lloyd Llandovery Castle on 28th Feb 1918, to Halifax. He was in hospital in Regimental # 101679, joined 22 Feb 1916, Edmonton, Alberta 66th Overseas Battalion, Edmonton Guards Wetaskiwin, Alberta for 2 months. He was discharged from service on Embarkation, 66th Battalion, Halifax, SS Olympic—April 28, 1916 This is definitely the correct person as he gives his next of kin as at Ruelwall. 17th Aug 1918 at Calgary, with the intention of living in Edmonton. John died on 11th Nov 1918. Death was attributed to military service. In 1925 a scroll and plaque were sent to his widow. Although John came from a farming family, he went out to Alberta in about 1910 as a miner. His last place of work before enlisting was as a miner at the Big Valley Collieries. There is a Lovett in Alberta which is now a ghost coalmining town, this is being investigated as his possible resting place by some contacts in Canada, but the spelling if different to what is on his gravestones. Why John was in Canada is a mystery—but he evidently kept in contact with his family back in Wales—as his wife received his medal and she must have been the one to instigate having his name added to the War Memorial in Lampeter Velfrey when she was living nearby at Melinau. Also he was recorded on both his children’s and father’s headstones. Work is still on-going and we hope to have more to add to this story in the future. Ruth Roberts
