Foreword From The Rector of IIUM Assalamualaikum w.b.t. To all of you, fellow members of Centre for Postgraduate Studies (CPS), all postgraduate students, let me first of all thank Allah SWT, for giving me an opportunity to meet on this very important oc- casion of postgraduate colloquium in trying to bring forward where the university should be in the future and certainly the roles of postgraduate students and the centre for postgraduate studies are crucial to the university because postgraduates generally are the people who invent and produce new knowledge for the university to move forward. Before that can happen, I think all of us need to understand, where this university is trying to hit for in the future in 2022 and beyond. Therefore, serving the purpose of my meeting with you to- day, to give some certainty of where we should be in 2023 at least, where the university will cele- brate its 40th anniversary. This is an important landmark for the university because we want to show to the world that we have advanced so far in our existence for the last 40 years. The univer- sity has been contributing and making a difference. As far as education is concerned and cer- tainly in the context of Islamic perspective and Islamic contribution to the world, this is the only difference I can see as compared to other universities in Malaysia and in many other universities around the world. We have different mission, and our mission certainly is craft-ed in what we call the upliftment of human quality of life and civilization. Not many universities around the world have such a mission statement ahead of them, and our university is one of those that possess this mission statement. Therefore, to make this mission state- ment achievable and to make it real and also to bring life to it, the postgraduate centre as well as the students become a crucial part of this whole mission. This university mission also discusses about how we can create a society that is looking for rahmatan lil alaminn and although this uni- versity is an Islamic university, we are not bound by just the Islamic ummah, but we are also re- sponsible for all of the other creations of Allah SWT. Be human being, or non-human being as long as anything that live, as long as they are the creations of Allah SWT, it becomes our responsi- bility and therefore this mission needs to be understood very well. Therefore, in our casting for re- search and also dissemination for knowledge, we do not want to miss these particular criteria which is distinctive for the university, and it should be implemented, regardless of where you came from, nationality, or citizenship because it is no longer relevant when we want to relate to rahmatan lil alamin. The world today is such that these reminders that we were given all the time, indicating that we came from a certain origin. We have our own cultures, we believe in certain values and there- fore this needs to be normalized as much as possible through the mission of the university, which is mission number six, where we talk about intercultural dialogue and understanding. This is the mechanism of seeking education and trying to understand and create education and knowledge more pervasive not only to yourself but also the world around us. Therefore, this activi- ty of having a dialogue sessions and deeper understanding of where we are, where we are go- ing to head off and how we are going to make this good. It is part and parcel of the activity of postgraduate students so that you could raise this to a level that everybody is almost good and could equal in the eyes of Allah SWT and also in seeking for knowledge. 2I
Previously, this activity has not yet been improvised and thus, this activity needs to be cultivated as part and parcel of the cultural of iqra’, that we usually discussed in IIUM. It is also a part of the activity that we safeguard the amanah in which everybody is treated with justice and fairness and with equitability as far as seeking knowledge and wisdom are concerned. I believe this is not new, but it is new in the sense of making it into a practical sort of activity, rather than as an ab- stract idea of how things could be implemented as far as I am concerned. So, on that note, I would want to bring you to a situation where all of us need to work together with the university including the centre of postgraduate studies to create a program where everybody can be equal, creating an environment in which all of us could be seeking only from one another apart from just doing the same thing that we have done for many years before. On that note, I hope you can talk about this a little bit more in the colloquium. You can come up with few ideas and how you can execute them, and I’m prepared to listen to your future contribution. Thus, we can propose those brilliant ideas in a much larger and detailed plan to the university so that the post- graduate student can become an instrument that are very active in trying to make this university a lively, significant, and relevant institution to the world around us. And finally, to make this univer- sity well-known as a major contributor to knowledge and also as contributor for humanity in the long term in the context of rahmatan lil alamin. So, I wish you well, I wish you all the best and hope Allah SWT will give us a blessing and also the courage to make all the changes that we need to make for the betterment of the future. In sha Allah. Thank you. Prof. Emeritus Tan Sri Dato’ Dzulkifli Abdul Razak Rector International Islamic University Malaysia 3 II
