PURSUE GOD Our highest value is to know God and to grow in our faith in God personally and in our homes. As individuals, families, small groups, home churches and church leaders we will practice the presence of Jesus on a moment by moment basis seeking His wisdom and direction, responding obediently to His assignments and calling on Him for His help in all things, knowing that unless the Lord is with us, our labors are in vain. Our faith will not be private but we will live out our faith at home, with our family and/or a few like-minded friends. Coming back to God We recently received a call from a young woman in crisis, as she was dealing with a lot of relationship stress both personally and at work. She shared how she was looking for a place of belonging and that she wanted to come back to God. We prayed together on the phone and she sought forgiveness and healing from God. She has since connected with a couple of the ministries CSC offers for women. There is nothing more rewarding than being one link in the chain, whereby the body of Christ helps another feel valued in the eyes of God and connected to Him. It is so exciting that this woman has joined us at CSC! May she feel the warmth and love of Christ and His unconditional acceptance. A True Friend A woman in our South Campus congregation recently shared how she had been spending quite a bit of time with a friend who was a Muslim. She loved her friend dearly and was praying she would come to know Jesus, which she just recently did! Now, they are not only friends, but meet regularly for discipleship. Feeling Loved We received an account from a woman who comes with her two boys to our New Canadian Friendship Centre almost every day! She is from Iraq originally, then moved to Syria. Now she lives here, in Canada. She says that she has never felt so much love, concern and care as she feels at NCFC. Wow! All praise to our great God and Savior! Work in the Lord is never in vain! Baptism in the Cold Recently, a young man from one of our Home Churches decided that he should be baptized and wanted it to happen at the river. His desire was that the experience would demonstrate his commitment to following Jesus no matter what the circumstances. He did not want outside influences to dictate his obedience to Jesus, so on a cold October evening, his close friends gathered at the river to witness his baptism. Glory to God! 12
PURSUE MISSION We will actively seek to assist our people to identify their unique role in the ‘mission’ God has called us all to pursue which is to ‘introduce people to Jesus Christ and to help them become fully devoted followers of Christ’ and then to take all reasonable steps to prepare, encourage and resource them to carry out these works of service (Ephesians 2:10) and to celebrate, in a public way, what God is doing in and through them. At the core of missional living is a commitment to make disciples for Jesus by being evangelistic and sharing the good news of Jesus, which happened in and through CSC Young Adults Impacting during 2013-14 in a multitude of ways, including: Forest Lawn Jesus Church Forest Lawn: Five young adults moved into Forest WORSHIP SERVICES SMALL GROUPS Lawn to start a missional community. BIBLE TRANSLATION We are becoming increasingly aware of issues requiring Restorative Justice, not the least of which is the increase of Human Trafficking taking place right here in Calgary. We are working with agencies such as Sparrow House and Sonshine Community Services, both of which take a holistic approach to restoration. ALPHA Alpha Canada, in partnership with numerous Alberta churches, together implemented the Alberta 2013 Alpha initiative. In the spring of 2013, Centre Street Church (CSC) made the decision to participate in this Alpha initiative. The leadership of CSC began to communicate the Alpha opportunity through all campuses and ministry departments in order to rally support and identify leaders who would lead Alpha courses in the fall. We began to promote Alpha to our church in the spring of 2013, and throughout the summer, we assisted our Alpha leaders to secure venues for the Alpha courses and to invite participants. Most of our CSC Alpha courses began late September and concluded in November. Alpha experiences took place in a wide array of Alpha venues and across various age: youth in supergroups; Grade 5/6 ministry; students at SAIT; young adults in pubs; adults in homes, pubs, church chapel, community halls and restaurants; seniors in care facilities; Servants Anonymous Society; and co-workers at work over lunch hours. Not only did CSC lend use of the building as a response centre in conjunction with the city of Calgary for over two weeks, but over $100,000 was given by CSC folks and was distributed through partners like Samaritan’s Purse, Sonshine Centre and the Mustard Seed. A dinner for displaced folks was supplied through the Drop Inn Centre served at the old Quality Hotel and many folks were helped with food, clothing, bedding and furniture. Each day for over a month a bus load of CSC people left central campus for a day to volunteer in flood relief in Calgary, High River and the Siksika Reservation. Caring for Moms & Tots Bridgeland Regional has allowed the Bridgeland Moms & Tots group to use the Bridgeland facilities free of charge and the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter to use the facilities for a conference and Santa’s Workshop. We also support the Pregnancy Care Centre and Samaritans Purse. We continue to visit care facilities in our area: to visit residents, sing carols, hold services, and host interagency meetings. Responding to World Disasters Typhoon Haiyan, one of the deadliest tropical cyclones in recorded history, hit the Philippines with tremendous ferocity on November 8, 2013. With more than 6,300 reported dead and thousands left homeless and destitute, CSC partnered with Samaritan’s Purse in a disaster relief effort. PURSUE SIMPLICITY We believe that in this next era God is calling us to ‘let go and let God’ grow His kingdom organically (all by itself through God’s people responding to the Spirit’s leading). While we will prayerfully pursue God’s direction for our future as a church and make plans accordingly, we see these plans being more global and organic in nature rather than highly detailed and linear in nature. This means ministry will be far less program and event-oriented and far more diversified, decentralized, unpredictable, in flux and messy. It also means we will be more focused on where we invest our resources and time, doing less better, simplifying and slowing down the pace of our corporate and individual lives by intentionally spending more of our time in our community ‘on mission’ and being the church in our community, city and world. FOCUSING ON PRAYER Prayers of Children Pastor Henry has spoken of the necessity and simplicity of prayer.
