More than a discrete set of business skills or practices, entrepreneurship is a mindset that can be applied to many realms of experience and achievement. 3
CO-CURRICULAR E5 PROGRAM The Experiential-Five Program, formerly the Kauffman Entrepreneurial Year (KEY) program, offers selected students a fifth, tuition-free year of college to pursue entrepreneurial endeavors, whether economic or social in nature. Qualified University of Rochester undergraduate students may propose to launch an enterprise, intern with a startup, undertake special projects, develop a business plan, research into various facets of entrepreneurship, or analyze how culture and public policy influence entrepreneurial activity. Students may apply from the time that they have been accepted into a major through the first semester of their senior year. STUDENT INCUBATOR NSF I-CORPS SITE Located at NextCorps, a University-affiliated The National Science Foundation (NSF) I-Corps non-profit business incubator at Sibley Square Site program provides entrepreneurial training in downtown Rochester, student companies and modest grant funding to University have access to the essentials of running students, faculty, staff and recent alumni a business: interested in commercializing a technical (STEM) business idea. Successful completion of the I-Corps Site program enables teams to apply to the National I-Corps Teams, an intensive seven-week program that provides up to $50,000 in grant funding. www.rochester.edu/aincenter/icorps-site UPSTATE NEW YORK NSF I-CORPS NODE Through a partnership among Cornell University, the University of Rochester, and Rochester Institute of Technology, the Upstate New York (UNY) I-Corps Node acts as a hub for commercialization training in the Northeast, connecting skilled researchers to valuable resources through national and regional I-Corps programming. The UNY Node offers Lean LaunchPad training aimed at doctoral and post-doc candidates through two-week Short Courses hosted by universities across the region. www.unyicorps.org 5
EDA UNIVERSITY CENTER @ UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER The Ain Center for Entrepreneurship is designated as the Rochester region’s only University Center by the Economic Development Administration (EDA) with the U.S. Department of Commerce. The EDA program is designed to leverage university resources to support economic development strategies in the greater Rochester region, and to provide entrepreneurial training in rural communities in the Finger Lakes. Ain ‘67S (MBA), MARK AIN BUSINESS MODEL founder of Kronos Incorporated WORKSHOP SERIES AND COMPETITION A series of three workshops covering a range of topics, including: articulation of their concept, sizing up market dynamics, development of business and operational models, and exposure to startup implementation issues. Students, individually or in teams, compete by submitting a business plan for a manufacturing or a technical business, which is often based on their senior design projects or research but is not limited to those projects. FUNDING TECH DEVELOPMENT FUND Promotes transfer and translation of research into commercial applications through monetary awards to advance promising UR technologies towards commercial applications. Awards can range from $40,000 to $100,000 over the course of one year. CURRICULAR MASTER OF SCIENCE IN TECHNICAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP & MANAGEMENT (TEAM) The Master of Science in Technical Entrepreneurship and Management, or TEAM, degree program at the University of Rochester offers students the opportunity to immerse themselves in a technical cluster of their choice while receiving a strong foundation in entrepreneurial management. Through a fast-paced curriculum at the University’s Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the Simon Business School, students can complete the program in as little as one year. TEAM graduates are equipped with detailed technical knowledge in their field while becoming business-savvy. They have the tools to innovate, lead, and strategically manage in an industry that increasingly rewards interdisciplinary expertise. RANKED NO. 9 TOP MBAS FOR SIMON SCHOOL MBA ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN U.S. ENTREPRENEURSHIP - 2018 Financial Times of London MINOR rankings.ft.com/businessschoolrankings/ The Simon School is committed to the teaching top-mbas-for-entrepreneurship-2018 of entrepreneurship. The Entrepreneurship minor allows MBA students to gain a rich understanding and a deep dive into the area of entrepreneurship. Graduates with this minor have started their own ventures or have pursued “intrapreneurial” careers within major corporations. Students often combine this minor with specializations in the finance or marketing tracks to further enhance their educational base. This is especially true for those pursuing investment banking/M&A where entrepreneurship knowledge can be very useful. www.simon.rochester.edu BARRY FLORESCUE UNDERGRADUATE BUSINESS PROGRAM The University offers BS and BA degrees in business, both of which build on the principles of economics and statistics. They are designed to provide undergraduates with an analytical approach for addressing current as well as future opportunities and challenges at for-profit companies, not-for-profit organizations, and graduate school. These sessions run on four consecutive Saturdays and feature workshops with subject matter experts and professionals. Buzz Lab is supported by a University Center grant from the Economic Development Administration of the US Department of Commerce. www.rochester.edu/aincenter/university-center/boot-camp ROMANIAN PROFESSOR ENTREPRENEURSHIP EDUCATION AND NETWORKING PROGRAM In 2016, the Ain Center was selected to host 24 professors from technical universities in Romania over four years. Funded by the Bucharest-based Romanian-American Foundation and conducted in partnership with the Fulbright Commission beginning in 2017, this program immerses the professors in the University’s entrepreneurship ecosystem, enabling them to design and implement state-of-the-art entrepreneurship education upon return to their home universities. 14 www.rochester.edu/aincenter/raf
NEXTCORPS NextCorps, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the University, offers programs and events to support entrepreneurs in the greater Rochester community, including the Rochester Venture Challenge and Annual Celebration of Entrepreneurship Luncheon, a business incubator, and Luminate—the world’s largest startup accelerator for optics, photonics and imaging. nextcorps.org SIMON VISION PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM The Vision Partnership Program at the Simon Business School is designed to foster relationships between students and the business community. Partners include companies of all sizes, nonprofit organizations, public institutions, the University, and Simon’s renowned network of alumni. It is a unique opportunity for students to work as a multi- disciplinary team and build experience by tackling real-world challenges. www.simon.rochester.edu/qr/vision/index.aspx VIRTUAL ENTERPRISES Virtual Enterprises International (VEI) is an in-school, live, global business simulation for high-school students. The University of Rochester partners with the VEI Northeast Region to host two events: Written Business Plan Judging and the Trade Fair and Oral Competition. University student volunteers judge the VEI business plans in the fall. In December, the Trade Fair and Oral Competition is held on River Campus. The winning regional Virtual Enterprises firm goes on to compete in an international competition held in New York City in the spring. www.veinternational.org PRE-COLLEGE PROGRAMS The Ain Center supports the Intensive Studies Business Bootcamp. The Academy runs classes across the United States and abroad. ABOUT THE AIN CENTER www.rochester.edu/aincenter The Ain Center for Entrepreneurship is a growing team of experienced entrepreneurs, incredible faculty, and knowledgeable staff. Serving the entire University of Rochester, we focus on a broad definition of entrepreneurship, turning the generation and transformation of ideas into valuable experiences, opportunities, and enterprises. The Center was launched in 2006, following a $3.6 million grant from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation with a $7.2 million match from the University. In 2015, the Ain Center for Entrepreneurship was named in recognition of the generous support of Mark S. Ain ‘67S (MBA) and his wife Carolyn Ain, known for their visionary leadership and support of innovation University-wide.
