Enjoy the spirit of historical architecture Josef Georg Kornhäusel (13 November 1782, in Vienna - 31 October 1860, in Vienna) was an Austrian architect of the first half of the 19th century. He primarily employed the contem- porary style of Neoclassical architecture, moving to the Biedermeier style in his later oevre. Also he was the architect of the Sauerhof. Kornhäusel was court architect to Johann I Joseph, Prince of Liechtenstein, for whom he had built palaces, theaters and garden pavilions.PRÄ.indd 10 15.10.13 09:12

In 1810, Josef and Karl Doblhoff took over the Sauerhof and had it entirely rebuilt. Josef Kornhaeusel, the renowed architect, was commissioned with the work, 91 apartments, 47 servants quarters, stable for 44 mounts and coach-houses for 30 carriages were built. During the Biedermeier era Baden became a meeting point for the aristocracy, scholars, writers and musicians (Beethoven, Weber ans Salieri were frequent visitors). In 1863 the Sauerhof was purchased by Achduke Albrecht, a patron of the municipality of Baden, who placed it at the disposal of the Officers Corps. During the First and Second World War the Sauerhof was converted into a military hospital. After comprehensive work the Grand Hotel Sauerhof was officially reopened on 1st May, 1978.PRÄ.indd 12 15.10.13 09:12
