Safe Injection Site Project Mali B
What is a “ Safe Injection Site “ ? - Found as: Overdose Prevention, Supervised Injection, and Drug Consumption Rooms. - The purpose of a safe injection site is to facilitate a safer use of illegal/illicit drugs - The idea of the site is aiming to reduce drug overdose and death, decrease disease and infection and increase an individual's exposure to options for treatment and recovery. How do they do this? - Provide clean facilities, education and medical supervision. - Staff is provided to answer questions, provide sterile equipment, and clean up after the user. Staff also do not handle, provide or sell drugs at any time. - Staff can refer users to treatment or rehab centres when needed. - Sites are stocked with overdose prevention medication(eg. Naloxone) , provide onsite emergency care when necessary, and have the means to quickly transfer someone to a hospital.

Overall Pro’s of Safe Injection Sites Supporters believe: - Have been proven effective for most of their goals: studies have shown a decrease in overdoses and related deaths. - Those who attend these sites feel they have a safe community and that it saves lives(as shown in Akosua and Dave) - Reduce the sharing of needles, disease, HIV and Hepatitis C in communities. - Overall reduction in medical costs due to the decrease in disease and deaths - Reduction in public injection/danger - Studies show an overall reduction in drug use by clients, and a higher rate of seeking rehabilitation and recovery. - Edmonton police say calls for service have decreased in areas near safe injection sites, as well as drug related crimes.
Overall Cons of Safe Injection Sites Critics Believe: - They encourage drug usage/justify its use - It is believed that they bring crime, as seen near Calgary’s safe injection site. - Safe Injection Sites cost Money to stock, build and keep open. - Research/science is still limited, and it is difficult to ethically study these sites properly - Drug dealers are targeting these sites, because known vulnerable users are near. - In some research crime in the areas of these sites has actually increased(however not that the sites are the cause) - Can increase needle debris in surrounding communities
What is a Collectivists View? - Collectivism places top priority on the group or community, and that group interests are more important than individual interests;therefore, I believe a collectivist would be in favour for these sites because: ● Taking care of those struggling with addiction help a wide group of people, and what is best for them should be given in order to benefit the community as a whole. ● They believe that there problem of addiction should be at equal values with anyone else's issues.
What Is An Individualists View? - Individualists ideology emphasizes that individuals should take care of themselves and pursue their own self interests;therefore, I believe an individualist would oppose these sites because: ● Money is coming out if their taxes to help people they don’t have anything to do with, and to them that is not okay. ● They also would believe these individuals should be taking care of themselves when it comes to their addictions and it is there responsibility to deal with the problem not someone else's. ● They believe that it is not in the communities overall best interest to support these individuals, as it has no benefit for those not involved.
