ryanbayless.results.netThe Twin PortsThe Twin Ports of Duluth, Minnesota and Superior, Wisconsin are located at theWestern tip of Lake Superior. Together, they make up the largest freshwater seaport onEarth, and the busiest on the Great Lakes. On top of the bustling port, the Twin Ports ishome to a quickly growing tourism industry. Last year, Duluth welcomed more than 3.5million visitors for everything from mountain biking on one of the city’s many trails, tosampling beers at local craft breweries, to world-class fishing on Lake Superior, andeverything in between. The Twin Ports is a diverse and growing community that trulyhas something for everyone.

ryanbayless.results.netHistoryPrior to European settlement, the area was inhabited by the Lake Superior Chippewa. These people named the area, Waiekwakitchigami. The Ojibwe name translated by theFrench as Fond du Lac, means the bottom or end of the lake. The first Europeanexplorers to the area were French fur traders in the mid-17th Century. The first toexplore the Duluth area was a French soldier named Daniel Greysolon, Sieur du Lhut, sometimes anglicized as DuLuth, is Duluth’s namesake. Soon, they established severalpermanent trading posts, and a community gradually grew around them.Throughout much of the 18th & 19th Centuries, the Twin Ports economy developedaround the timber industry. By the 1850’s however, iron and copper deposits had beendiscovered north of Duluth in the area that is now known as the Iron Range, and theeconomy of the Twin Ports was soon consumed by mining. With the boom of mining in the area, railroads soon followed, and with the opening ofthe Sault Saint Marie locks in 1855, Duluth became the only port in the United Stateswith access to both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. By 1869, Duluth was the fastestgrowing city in the country. Estimates predicted that it would surpass Chicago in only afew years.

ryanbayless.results.netHistoryInto the 20th Century, in 1905 Duluth was the busiest port in the United States, evenpassing New York City in gross tonnage, and was home to the most millionaires percapita of anywhere in the country. However, all booms come to a bust. The great depression slowed Duluth’s rapid growth, but the demand for high grade steel in World War II renewed Duluth’s economy for ashort while. However, in the mid 1950’s the high-grade ore on the Iron Range ran out.Low-grade shipments continued, but the port was dealt another blow by the steel crisisof the 1970’s. The 1980’s saw Duluth hit an unemployment rate of 15%.Going into the 21st Century, the Twin Ports have completely restructured theireconomies. Although shipping still remains the foundation of the economy, tourism isnow a major industry here. The downtown waterfront called Canal Park wascompletely revitalized, and is now one of the largest tourist hotspots in the Midwest. The Twin Ports are growing again, and are welcoming more tourists to the area eachyear. Last year, more than 35 million people visited the area. That number is expectedto continue to grow, and the future of the Twin Ports looks brighter than ever.

ryanbayless.results.netClimate The Twin Ports climate is heavily influenced by Lake Superior, and the hill in Duluth. Water tends to hold a temperature for longer than the surrounding air. So, the Twin Ports tend to have warm falls until the lake cools, and colder than normal springs while the lake warms up. AverageTemperature YearlySnowfall

ryanbayless.results.netWhy Use a REALTOR®?One of most important parts of understanding what a REALTOR® does, isunderstanding how a real estate transaction works. As you know, when someone isready to sell their house they call a REALTOR® . They call a real estate agent, becausethey want someone who is an expert at selling homes. They know how to market theproperty, negotiate, make sure the paperwork is done perfectly, and look out for theirclients’ best interests, but where does that leave you, the buyer? Who is negotiating foryou, and looking out for your best interests? This is where I come in. You need someone to represent you in the transaction, and as Ibuyers’ agent, I do just that. It’s my job to help you find a home, negotiate, and look outfor your best interests. Overall, it’s my job to make sure the entire transaction is hassle-free.In the end, buying a home is going to be one of the biggest purchases you will evermake. It can be a very overwhelming process with a lot of paperwork and deadlines.Obviously, this isn’t a process you want to go into blindly. You need someone you cantrust to help guide you, and look out for you along the way. Therefore, even if you don’tdecide to work with me, it’s extremely important that you find someone you can trust torepresent you in this process.

ryanbayless.results.netRyan BaylessDeciding to move is a major moment in a person's life, especially moving to a new city. When looking for a REALTOR® you want to find someone who is familiar with the area, and is committed to getting results. As a graduate of UMD, and a life-long resident of the Twin Ports, very few people areas familiar and connected with the community as I am. Furthermore, unlike manyagents, I am a full-time REALTOR®, real estate isn’t just a hobby for me. That means myclients are my priority.Your time is valuable, and you can't afford more stress. That's where I come in. I striveto make the entire moving process simple and stress-free.
