RAMGO GARDENING GUIDE 10 Urban Gardening Helpful Reminders Plants need at least 6 hours of sunlight. Plants tend to be spindly and end up having long stem if it lacks sunlight! Keep your potting mix moist. For hot summer months, watering should be twice a day. For rainy season, water once a day. Remember NOT TO OVERWATER your plants! Pour water directly to roots, not on the leaves. You may opt to use mulching materials to hold moisture much longer. Pull out weeds up to the roots as they appear. Fertilize according to NPK requirements. Side dress to incorporate fertilizer into the soil around the plants. 4
Apply granular fertilizers 3 Urban inches away from plant base. Gardening Foliar feeding is to spray PRESENT SITUATION IN URBAN LIVING: liquid fertilizer on plant’s leaves. Follow dilution rate • Lives in central business district of foliar fertilizers to avoid (rentals: apartments, condominiums) fertilizer burn! Begin applying Groviota • Modern technology everywhere Fertilizer 3 weeks after the • Tight schedules (kids, career, seeds have sprouted. academics, home chores) • Instant and processed foods • Overpopulation (crowded areas, heavy traffic and pollution) • Health status at risk (malnourishment/obesity) One of the active solutions is URBAN GARDENING. Urban Gardening refers to overcoming the restrictions of an urban area and creating a garden in your home by growing plants of all types and varieties, no matter the size or lack of ‘natural space.’ BENEFITS OF URBAN GARDENING • Food security within household and community • Safe and quality vegetable produce for urban residents • Lowers cases of malnutrition • Creates job opportunities • Urban landscaping/aesthetic value • Gives fun and enjoyment in productivity 5
RAMGO GARDENING GUIDE How to Sow Seeds 1 PREPARE THE TRAYS Select the correct size of seedling tray for the type of seeds you intend to plant: • For large seeds like watermelon, bitter gourd, and bean seeds, you will need seedling trays with 32 receptacles. • For medium-sized seeds like those of eggplant, pepper, and tomato plants, trays with 50 to 72 receptacles would be best. • For small seeds like lettuce, pechay, cabbage, herb and flower seeds, trays with 105 to 128 receptacles are most advisable. • Root crops like carrots and radishes must be planted directly in the soil. 2 PLANT THE SEEDS Using Ramgo’s Soil-less Seed Raising Medium, fill each receptacle in the seedling tray. Push the mix firmly with your thumb to compact the mix. Use a pencil to dent a hole in the mix of each receptacle. Place a seed in each hole and seal the seed in by sprinkling some mix over it and applying light pressure with your thumb over it. 3 WAIT FOR YOUR SEEDLINGS TO GROW Spray over your seedling trays with a hand sprayer – make sure that the seedling homes are always moist to the touch and NEVER dried out. Keep trays under partial shade. As much as possible, keep trays on a table or work bench to avoid soil-borne bacteria that may thrive in your ground soil. When leaves start to appear, bring the trays under full sun. Begin applying Groviota1 3 weeks after the seeds have sprouted. 6
4 TRANSPLANT YOUR SEEDLINGS Select a plant bed with good location where your plants can receive ample sunlight and not be too crowded. Transplant your seedling when 4 true leaves have appeared. Dig out holes in plant beds large enough to occupy the seedling plugs. Make sure there is enough room for growth in the seedling bed as this would be a permanent place for your plant. Squeeze the bottom of the receptacle to pop out each seedling then place in dug hole and press down the soil around it. DO NOT put too much pressure as you may end up compacting the root ball or burying the plug too deep. When properly done, the top of the plug should be just at the soil surface. For home gardeners, you may include and mix Ramgo's Soi-less Potting Medium on your containers and pots. To allow crops like tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and alike to grow with enough space, transplant 1-2 seedlings per pot only. 5 CARE FOR YOUR PLANTS For hot summer months, watering should be done twice a day: once early in the morning and once late in the afternoon. Water only once a day during the rainy season. When strong winds or rain are expected, set up a makeshift tent of net or plastic over your seedlings. Pull out weeds as they appear; make sure to pull them out complete with the root! Mulching helps eliminate weed growth. Fertilize seedlings according to their NPK requirements; for leafy vegetables, use Ramgo’s Urea 46-0-0 as sidedress.2 For fruit-bearing vegetables, use Ramgo’s Ammonium Phosphate 16-20-0 as sidedress. 1 Foliar feeding is to spray liquid fertilizer on a plant’s leaves 2 Sidedressing is to incorporate fertilizer into the soil around plants 7
RAMGO GARDENING GUIDE Basic Plant Bed Preparation 1 Choose a location where there is at least 6 hours of direct sunlight. 2 Outline the shape of your plot or garden bed with stakes on all four corners. Loop a rope around the first stake, stretch tightly to the next stake and loop it again. Go on until you have rounded up all stakes. This should keep the plot’s boundary clean and straight. Common width for plant beds is 0.90 m, or 3 ft; length depends on the space available. 3 Remove weeds by pulling them out manually or by using a weed killer or Klearweed Herbicide. 4 Spread 100 grams of Ramgo’s Complete Fertilizer per square meter. Raise bed by incorporating enough topsoil – about 4 to 10 inches above ground. Find garden soil that is weed-free. Mix in organic matter like decomposed leaves, grass cuttings, decomposed kitchen scraps or chicken manure when available. 5 Rotate and till soil by double digging. 6 Before sowing any seeds or seedlings, raise the bed and clear it from stones, rocks, sticks, clods and other debris. Water bed before planting. HARVESTING The timetable for harvesting is clearly marked at the back of each packet. Crops that need to be harvested on time are beans, corn, cucumbers, and peas. Crops that can wait a few days are broccoli, lettuce and other salad greens, radishes, squash, and tomatoes. Crops that can wait a few weeks are onions, carrots, kale, leeks and most herbs. 8
