KINGSTON MAURWARD COLLEGE Floral Design NEWSLETTER 2022



Our Level 3 Floristry students designed beautiful bouquets, horse garlands, sashes, crowns, and even a waistcoat for a fictional wedding photoshoot earlier last term. Forming part of their assessment, this exercise was great for students to practise photographing and staging models for their websites and portfolios. A huge thank you to our models, staff members Ben and Mike!





Our Level 3 students showed great teamwork and initiative to set up these floral displays for Stinsford Church earlier last term.

One of our Level 3 students, Becky will be working with The Estate Shop here on campus, supplying them with beautiful fresh flowers to sell every Friday!

Earlier last term, we were thrilled to welcome Paul Stephens from Helliwell Flowers who spoke to our Level 2 students about his experiences in the industry as a flower wholesaler and what it's like running an enterprise.

One of our Level 2 students, Lillie, created this fantastic circlet earlier last term. A lot of wiring and patience is needed to create this, but the finished result is superb! A beautiful prayer book designed by one of our Level 3 students, Becky, proudly modelled by her dog, Wednesday.

A stunning cascade design by one of our Level 3 students, Holly, using phalenopsis orchids, calla lilies roses, hypericum and amaranthus, with hedera Ivy for the cascade. A beautiful vegetative design example from one our Level 3 students, Jenny - great work! Our Level 2 students were visited by Floral Couture by Jay earlier last term. He spoke to our students about his journey from being a student here at the College to running his own floristry business, and answered any questions the students had!

Our Level 3 students decorated the fireplaces and Christmas tree in the Main house before Christmas last year - this looks stunning!

Some of the designs created by one of our current Level 3 students, Jenny. Working previously for two years at Stems in Dorchester, she now works at Occasions in Sherborne. A wired crescent design using cymbidium orchids, foliage, hypericum and gold asparagus fern, created by one of our Level 3 students, Isabel. Earlier in the term, we were thrilled to meet Katie Priestly from Dorset Flower Company who gave a talk to our Level 3 students. As in industry, our teachers and students are constantly evolving and supporting one another with reducing their Carbon footprints and ensure they are working towards being more sustainable.

Previously studying at Bicton College in 2020, Holly was awarded Second Place for Student of the Year by the British Florist Association, BFA. She is now on the Level 3 course here at the College and works at Flowers International in Bridgewater. One of her beautiful creations is below!

In December, our Level 2 and Level 3 students travelled up to London to visit Kensington Palace, and several florists including Scarlet and Violet, Rebel Rebel Flowers, and New Covent Garden Flower Market, for an inspiring demonstration and tour by Simon Lycett. This was a great opportunity for our students to meet industry experts, and research trends and themes.

A few designs created by one of our current Level 3 students, Sally, who is currently working at Lavender Blue in Bridport. Some of her designs include a shower bouquet, wired book spray, wired crescent bouquet and a wired Victorian posy. Such beautiful work!

Our Level 2 students took part in the prestigious Salisbury Cathedral Flower Festival earlier this term, the theme focused on sustainability. They created a 4 metre high broken arch installation from chicken wire frames and buckets using peonies, roses, campanula, gyposophilia and a range of foliage from campus. This was a fantastic opportunity for the students to be working alongside world class designers and over 450 flower arrangers.



Earlier this term, our Level 2 students created these fun little bees from craespedia!

One of the single ended funeral spray designs, our Level 2 students created, using roses, dianthus, eustoma and gypsophilia earlier this term. A stunning Crescent Moon glued buttonhole created by one of of Level 2 students, Maisie! Designer boards created by two of our Level 3 students, Jenny and Rhianna.

Our Level 3 students visited Double H Nurseries and Love Orchids earlier this term to understand the processes of growing seedlings to plants on an industrial scale, and the relationships between companies and their suppliers.

Some of the beautiful work created by our Level 2 and Level 3 students this term including crescent designs, georgian designs, body adornments, and hogarth curves.

Earlier this term, our Level 3 students created these beautiful floral pieces from tractor garlands, decorating a Folly, and creating unique accessories to assembling a moon gate - well done everyone! With thanks to: Bridal Reloved Dorchester Knight Vision Photography
