Stay safe in the sun Being out in the sunshine is not only a fun way for all the family to be more active, it also gives you the Vitamin D your bodies need. But please watch out - sunburn doesn’t just happen on holiday, you can burn in the UK, even when it's cloudy. Aim to strike a balance between protecting yourself from the sun and getting enough vitamin D from sunlight. And please take extra care of your children. If you’re outside for a while make sure they’re in the shade, covered up or wearing sunscreen, as exposing your children to too much sun may significantly increase their risk of skin cancer later in life. Sun safety tips: Protect your face and neck with a wide-brimmed hat. Wear sunglasses with a guaranteed ultraviolet (UV) light filter. Use a sunscreen with a high sun protection factor (at least SPF 30). Follow the instructions on the bottle and reapply as recommended, particularly after swimming. Wear clothing made of cotton or natural fibres. These have a closer weave and offer more protection from the sun. Stay out of the sun during the hottest part of the day, usually between11am and 3pm.Try to sit in the shade, even at other times of the day.
