AUGUST 23, 2020 WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS First Time at FPC? Text HELLO to (402) 235-9510 Download the Bulletin for Today’s Service at fpclincoln.org/sunday-worship PRELUDE “Simple Gifts” setting by Susan Rucker CALL TO WORSHIP INTROIT “God Is Here Today” God is here today; as certain as the air I breathe, as certain as the morning sun that rises, as certain when I sing you’ll hear my song. PRAYER OF CONFESSION Dr. Kris Brammer Forgiveness flowed from the cross, when you, Christ, asked God to forgive those who crucified you. We are much less forgiving than you. We want you to forgive us, but we hold grudges. We want you to give us a second chance, but we write people off after one failure. We let our own hurt get in the way of healing relationships and restoring friendships. We do ask for your forgiveness, but we also ask for your healing – heal the hurt that stops us from showing grace to those who hurt us. Heal the disappointment that turns us away from those we love. Teach us how to forgive, and even more, teach us how to receive forgiveness, for even as we dwell on those who have hurt and betrayed us, we know we have done the same to others. Amen.

ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS This is one of the hardest things about following Christ – acknowledging our own need for forgiveness, and genuinely forgiving others. Fortunately God is an expert at forgiveness, and even when we are not sorry, and even when we hold grudges, God’s forgiveness flows freely for us. May that forgiveness change us until we too become a vessel for God’s grace to flow into this world. Friends, hear and believe the good news: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven and set free to worship, and to serve. SPECIAL MUSIC “I Then Shall Live” Lloyd Larson Jenny Smith, soloist MATTHEW 6:9-13 (New Revised Standard Version) 9‘Pray then in this way: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. 10Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11Give us this day our daily bread. 12And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13And do not bring us to the time of trial, but rescue us from the evil one. HYMN “There’s a Wideness in God’s Mercy” Glory to God Hymnal #435 There's a wideness in God's mercy, like the wideness of the sea. There's a kindness in God's justice, which is more than liberty. There is no place where earth's sorrows are more felt than up in heaven. There is no place where earth's failings have such kindly judgment given. For the love of God is broader than the measures of the mind. And the heart of the Eternal is most wonderfully kind. If our love were but more faithful, we would gladly trust God's Word, and our lives reflect thanksgiving for the goodness of our Lord. BREAKING OPEN OUR HEARTS WITH PRAYER Email: [email protected] Text: PRAY to 402-235-9510 Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
