Yet, there was always somethingmissing, a feeling of, “I know I can do more … but what?”While watching the Sunday Morning news, I saw aphotographer who donated her time, taking photos ofrescue animals and the adoption rate went through theroof! It was my light-bulb moment, realizing I could usewhat I do every day, to make a difference. SomethingI’ve been doing for over 20 years!I’m a designer and photographer, and it finally dawnedon me, that what I do for a living, could make a differencehelping animals. All these years, I felt I couldn’t grasp ontosomething concrete to make a difference, and yet, it wasright in front of me.What is your talent, what are you good at? Organizingsocial events, Marketing? Social Media? Or do you simplyneed a nice evening out, taking a shelter dog for a walk.Or perhaps a cuddle with the kitties to help them feelloved and become more socialized. What ever it is, it’snever too small. Collectively, we can all make a differenceto get Second Chance for Animals noticed. Ultimately, finding forever homes for all the angles we see come intothe Franklin Township Shelter. Now I look forward to each time I take photos of all theanimals at the shelter. Capturing their true spirit, the loveand dedication in their eyes. And creating a newsletter thatwill hopefully get people interested in volunteering andexcited to become a part of Second Chance for Animals. It’s a wonderful feeling, knowing I can take action on aregular basis and be connected with so many others likemyself, who love animals as much as I do. – Tracy Lee Sullivan2

Become What Can You Do to Make a Difference? a Volunteer Here’s a Little About What We Do Adoption Days! We’d love to have you helps us with Saturday adoption days at the shelter. We also bring adoptable pets to Petsmart, Petco and PetValu. These events are staffed with 3 to 6 volunteers and sometimes we have to cancel events because we do not have enough people to staff them, so we need you! Outreach adoption events help to let the community know about our group and the great animals ready for adoption. Bring a friend, or your spouse! Clean Bottoms, Happy Cats, Smiling Dogs! We need help cleaning the shelter any day of the week. Each day, each cat cage and dog kennel is cleaned top to bottom. This is a big job but very rewarding to provide the most basic care to the animal. They are always very happy when you give them lunch too! The silver lining to a clean cage — whether it’s snuggling with a kitty or taking a pup out for a stroll, they are very happy to spend any time you can with them. Donate Pet Food Items most in need are Purina Kitten Chow, Purina Cat Chow and canned cat and dog food. Please avoid fish flavors for the cats. We prefer to give them chicken or turkey. We also use bleach, dish soap and laundry detergent. Transport We need help getting the cats and dogs to vet appointments and also to bring injured wildlife to Raptor Trust or Mercer County Wildlife Center. Vet appointments are scheduled so this can be arranged ahead of time but the wildlife rescue runs cannot be planned. If your schedule is flexible, and could be available to transport to the Raptor Trust or Mercer County Wildlife Center, let us know, and we’ll keep you on the Call List! It sure helps to have a number of volunteers to call when there is an immediate need. ! Bleach We’re always in need of Bleach. Plain, unscented is best! 3

Buzby—Thief of Heartsand Other Things...About 6 years ago I found myself staring backat this little tough kitty in a carrier at the shelter.Katie rescued him earlier that day. He was staringat me with the look of “Are you looking at me?”Katie asked if I wanted to foster him and I said yes.Since that day, he has never left.As time went on, we noticed that things were Buzbymissing from our kitchen. One day I actuallysaw Buz grab the loaf of bread and trot upstairs.I followed him and was lucky to find his secretstash under our bed. There were a few loaves ofbread, chewed Ziploc baggies of crackers andcookies under there. I guess I just gave away thatI rarely clean under our bed.A few years ago after draining water from a few tuna cans, that night the sink drain was missing and still to thisday I haven’t found it. My sister-in-law slept over once and she caught Buz actually carrying her watch downthe stairs in his mouth. He stole it off the nightstand. Odd as it wasn’t in a Ziploc baggie. He also stole myhusband’s glasses off of his nightstand when he was in the shower once. Luckily I noticed them in the hallwaywithout stepping on them. Buz knows when I am making my husband’s sandwich in the morning and he’ll sneak up and sit on the tin foil and will play tug o’ war with the lunchmeat. I always lose! He will sit with us and nibble on chips and popcorn but only if he can swipe one out of the bag himself. He also loves to chew on corn husks, which we do not approve of. I have to cover them and put them in the fridge and 1 of 2 things will happen: He will sneak in the fridge or sit outside of the fridge and cry for the corn. When we brought home Sammy from the shelter a few years ago, another kitty I was going to foster. Yes, he’s still here also. Buzby stopped eating and wasn’t using the litter box. The vet kept him twice for about 2 weeks and ran many tests and luckily they came back negative. The vet explained to us that it’s a mental issue and he may just need more attention. Yup, turns out that was it and now Buzby and Sammy are good buddies. – Donna Aumack 8

ACnrimacakel rs special observations around the shelter The Summer Wind A friend of mine passed away recently. My wife, Tara, waited until after dinner to tell me fearing it would upset me. But I ended up having mixed emotions. Let me explain. You see Sinatra had beautiful blue eyes and a good “singing” voice, hence the name. But when he arrived at the shelter, he was anything but beautiful. He was an old & scrawny cat with mangled dirty fur. The first time I saw him in the Incoming Cat Room, I avoided him. So, even though he called for attention through his cage door, his first week of Thursday night socialization was as an observer. The next week he pushed to the front of his cage, and called out again. This time, I figured I’d give him a quick petting. But, that is where he taught me the shelter’s golden rule; don’t judge our animals by their cover! He ended up being a very sweet cat, although his age made him a bit ornery (like me), and he had a lot to say (also like me). He, and his roommate Dino, quickly became favorites of mine, and each week they waited impatiently until I spent time with them. Now Sinatra was never going to make it up to the front adoption room (being promoted), but eventually he went home with another admirer, Amy from FTAS (with Dino – yea). There the two pals were able to live for the last nine months or so. Dino is still doing well. That’s where my mixed feelings come in. Although Sinatra passed away, he was able to do it at “home”. He had the love of his family around him. Isn’t that what we wish for all our friends? And so Sinatra, you will not be forgotten, you left a paw print on my soul. I would say to enjoy heaven with the real Sinatra, but I can’t. Although I am sure you are there, I’m not quite so sure he is… Thank you Amy for taking such good care of our “boy”. All my best to Dino. –Tom Young 9

What Do You See in this Picture? Answer: If you said “Success”, or a “New Beginning”, then you are right. This is (Miss) Clancy’s empty run after she went home with her new family. (Miss) Clancy had been with us for over a year, but never gave up hope. That spirit is what we all need to keep inside of us as we find all our residents the right home. Thank you all who had loved and cared for (Miss) Clancy while she was ours.ShheefrinFaorlley vfeourndHome! Clancy 10
