The opposite of directmethod and deductivemethod is the inductivemethod. This is alsocalled indirect instruction.

Instead of the teachersgiving the rule in addingsimilar fractions at the onset,s/he will give them at leastfive examples of added similarfractions at one time. Ask thepupils to study the examplesthen ask them to explain hows/he arrived at the sums.

The inquiry method orproblem solving methodand project method fallunder indirect, guided,and exploratory approachto instruction.

Examine animals and study their body parts. Eachhas a backbone. The dog has a backbone. The fish andfrog also have backbones. Then s/he defines vertebrates.

1. The learners are more engaged in the teaching-learning process. With our facilitating skills, the learners formulate the generalization or rule.

2. Learning becomes more interesting at the onsetbecause we begin with the experiences of our students. We begin with what they know.

3. It helps the development of our learners’ higher orderthinking skills. To see patterns and analyze the same in order to arrive at generalizations require analytical thinking.

1. It requires more time and so less subject matter will becovered. We need much time to lead our students to the formulation of generalizations.

2. It demands expert facilitatingskills on the part of the teacher. We’ve got to ask the right questions, organize answers and lead the learners to the generalization or conclusion.

The major part of theprocess of learning a topic is:establishment of formulasand/ or principles. Thelearner must grow in hisunderstanding inductivelyand apply the principle of theformula.
