HOUSING MORPHOLOGIES Using the Strip District of Pittsburgh as a site analysis, a housing project was developed in order to incorporate the commuter lifestyle. With the change in occupancy throughout a work typical day the building themselves morph and contract based on the oxygen and CO2 levels within the residence. The higher the Carbon Dioxide the higher the expansion levels of the pod would increase. Directly relating to occupency these units must adapt to their surrounding occupants. ALGAE BASED ECOMACHINE The unit model was based upon the algae biofuel centered ecomachine. The symbiotic processes of algae and a human resident allow the membrane of the unit to control algal cell growth in response to the energy used by the current number of occupants. The expansion allows for a larger membrane and a higher production of biofuel energy.Page 2

HOUSING MORPHOLOGIES The ecomachine allowed for algal cells to be converted into energy through a series of collection and extractions sytems. The Biomass storage capsules allowed for three collection points across the site. The capsules traveled below the base level to extract lipids. The dark atmosphere beneath the Earth allows for the slow of respiration and the higher percentage of lipid oils produced. Extraction Pods pressed and released the valuable lipid cells and separated the remaining cell wall. The collection of the outer membrane is then redistributed back above the Earth as a fertilization technique. Algae movements vary according to daylight patterns in Pittsburgh altering the timing of photosynthesis and respiration rates.Page 4

RITUAL Roman Bathes are ordered in a specific ritual to cleanse the mind and body. Comprised of thre bathes varying in temperature and size this bath house follos the traditional path while having the user constanly move uward as their experience warms in temperature. Once the Caldarium, the small warmest bath is reached , participants will continue in reverse order to exit the bathes.Page 12

AQUA PAVILIONA design proposal for a Grow Pittsburgh community garden with the puropse of maximizing the collection of rain water into acistern below ground. The structure provides a community with a cost effective design to meet the requirements of the entire site.Flexible tubing is also introduced in order to fill smaller collection containers, fill a handwashing station, and provide elements ofplay for the younger members of the surrounding neighborhood. ORGANIC FORM AND ANALYSIS An analytical approach searches for an architectural understanding of the both joint articulations and the detailed connections of the knee. Base geometries were determined and tendon systems were separated in order to discover the structural components and capabilities within the joint. As the largest joint in the human anatomy, the knee acts as a hinge to distrubute weight in both vertical and horizontal directions. An exploration of geometries that encorporate these movements was recorded as well as an understanding for the layered facade of protection including cartilage, ligaments, muscle and the skin.Page 18

CARNEGIE MUSEUM of ARTFurther studies into anatomical form were completed at the Carnegie Museum of Art and Natural Historythrough a series of visits and studies of bone form and connection. A glimpse into the evolutionaryprocesses of bones including chemical makeup, density, function, and form were explored in an indepthdrawing set.Anatomy and Organic Form Carnegie Mellon University Page 19
