Dedication T his book would quite simply not have been possible without my personal acquaintance of Leo Armin and my knowledge of his work. His philosophical writings are a true template by which to understand our human situation and I wholeheartedly dedicate this book to him. I first met Leo in 1975. I was by then in my mid-20s and the connective tissue of meaning that was intimately intertwined through my childhood years had long since unraveled. My inner world of knowing had quietly shut me out and I was consigned to make my home in the outlands of that enchanted core. In the absence of any real template by which to understand my situa- tion, I was lost and knew no way to lead my life in any original or meaningful way. And yet, quietly and passionately, I continued to long to rejoin that inner place of meaning that adult life had encroached on. I believe that I still would be to this day, had I not met Leo. There is no way to receive the gift of real knowledge and not feel oppressed. Oppression makes us try to extend that gift to others in the most considered and most excellent way we can. To pass on the jewels of wisdom is the duty of all generations. If this book enables others to relocate that inner and spiritual intelli- gence that is the meaning of who we have evolved to be, it will have been worthwhile. My wish for this book is that it lends its weight to the obvi- ous growing trend appearing in our world to find a new level of intelligence to solve the significant problems that we face. 195
Acknowledgments T he project to bring the spiritual dimension of human life to a large audience in a practical and substantive way began for me over 25 years ago. In that time so many people have influenced my life in moments and over long peri- ods, I cannot name them all. Among all my friends and colleagues with whom I have been fortunate enough to have been in research all these years, I want to mention Stephen Isaacs, John Hannon, and Daniel Goldenberg, who specifically helped me with the book, and John Turner, whose great insights into world theater have helped to fashion the practical side of SQ training. My more recent associates helped me to bring such a diffi- cult subject as the enigma of self and consciousness to a clearer and more concise form. We all found it an immense struggle to bring the realms of the unlimited to the limitations of the printed page. In particular, I want to thank Nick Brealey, my publisher, who had the vision to see the shape of the ideas and helped to frame them more clearly; his great team including Victoria, who have helped market and promote the cause; Sally Lansdell, my editor; Hanserik Tonnheim, my agent; Eva Ljungkvist, who has liaised with business leaders to bring SQ to business; and Dr. Stephen Porges, who has profoundly influenced my understanding of the way brain science supports the spiritual dimensions of life. Finally, my wife and best companion Joan has been my support and sanity quite literally every step of the way. Thank you all. Richard A. Bowell Denmark, August 2004 196
SQ-training SQ-training is a company established by the author, Richard A. Bowell. SQ-training offers assistance to business, health, educa- tion, and the individual in developing higher intelligence solu- tions. It works with highly trained and skilled associates operating in Europe, the USA, and Canada. Training choices The Seven Steps of Spiritual Intelligence The core insights and lessons from this book offered in a live training environment, with practical exercises and personal coaching. Self-Leadership Focusing on the inner resource of choice and how it applies at all moments in our life. This course is the foundation for leadership skills in all expressions of life. 197
SQ-TRAINING The Cooperative Team Our perception of self and others is often that we are competing for space, for recognition, for acknowledgment. The three intel- ligences working in harmony provide a different perspective. Our brilliance is in the expression of our mission and in our mission the team can naturally form. Stress, a Positive Force for Change Times of stress can be the herald of a new level of self. Pacifying the symptoms or covering up the problem can be to miss the enormous challenge and opportunity for change that stress her- alds. We are all looking for a new level of intelligence to do more, be more effective, with less stress. Communication Skills: Trusting Your Intelligence We are all presenting ourselves all the time. Altering the manner and style is only a small part of the skill of presentation. With SQ, presentation becomes more live and spontaneous with the release of one’s inner intelligent self. The International SQ-Training Academy: Training the Trainer Training SQ begins in self. It is not a set of formulae or quick-fix solutions that can be learnt. It is a deep, caring core that has a 198
THE SPIRITUALLY INTELLIGENT SELF mission to be of service in bringing the personal and collective potential of individuals and organizations to new levels of intelligence. SQ for the Classroom: A Children’s Work Program The inner engagement of children in learning and discovery is greatly enhanced when the educators are able to recognize the frameworks of how intelligence is influencing the daily growth of the children. The educator can use the model of the three intel- ligences in developing their role as educators and in recognizing the true potential of children.
