September, 2021. Vol. 5 First Holy Month, Muharram by Meerab Asim - Yr 11A Hijri calendar The Hijri calendar also known as “Islamic calendar” is followed by Muslims all over the globe. The Hijri calendar was officially created during the reign of Khalifa Umar ibn al-Khattab. The Prophet’s migration in 622AD marks the beginning of the Hijri year calendar and gives the calendar its name. This calendar is used to mark a number of Islamic events and dates like Ramadan, Eid al- Fitr, Eid al-Adha and even the beginning of Hajj season. This Hijri year consists of 12 months out of which 4 are sacred; Dhu al-Qa‘dah, Dhu al-Hijjah, Muharram and Rajab. The Hijri New Year 1443 A.H started in August this year. Introduction to Muharram The month of Allah, Muharram is a glorious and blessed month. It is the first month of the Islamic calendar and is held to be the second-holiest month after Ramadan. Muharram itself, means 'forbidden' and since it is considered to be holy, many Muslims use it as a period of prayer, reflection and doing good deeds. It is usual for Muslims to fast during this holy month. Ashura According to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) fasting on the Day of Ashura will kill away all the sins of the previous year. The expiation of sins that is achieved by fasting ‘Ashura’ refers to minor sins; with regard to major sins, they need separate repentance. And so, many Muslim followers choose to fast on the ninth and tenth days of this month. The Prophet (PBUH) was very keen to make sure he fasted on the Day of Ashura because of its great status. It was told by Ibn ‘Abbaas that \"I never saw the Prophet (PBUH) so keen to make sure he fasted any day and preferring it over another except this day, the day of ‘Ashura’\"... Summary To sum up, the Hirji year consists of 12 months, 4 of which are Dhu al- Qa’dah, Dhu al-Hijjah, Muharram and Rajab. Muharram is the first month of the Hirji calendar, and it is the second-holiest month after Ramadan. Muslims use Muharram as a period to do good deeds, pray and reflect on themselves. Muslims also fast on Ashura as it is said that fasting on those days kills all the sins away.

September, 2021. Vol. 5 The Necessity of Literacy by Dorina Mae - Yr 11A Ever wondered how much communication has progressed from the Old Stone Age until now? Back then, communications were done through paintings, petroglyphs and what not! But, nowadays, we can read, write, and dictate sentences in different languages. However, there are still millions of illiterate people all over the world. This issue highlights the significance of International Literacy Day since the event internationally reminds people of the importance of literacy for the accessibility of jobs and basic communication skills that may result in eradication of poverty. With the current situation, the Covid-19 pandemic has caused a catastrophe amongst the learners of today's society as learning has shifted towards an online approach and that explains why the theme of this year is: “Literacy for a human-centred recovery: Narrowing the digital divide”. Overall, the development of literacy is an achievement worth celebrating as the majority of people nowadays are literate — so much so that some humans are even bilingual or multilingual that is essential for understanding each other that can even lead to world peace! So, can you think of any other reasons why literacy should not be put at the top priority?

September, 2021. Vol. 5 Internet Safety for Online Learning by Ms. Arshiya Syeda - ICT Teacher. How can you stay safe on the Internet? Follow these guidelines to protect yourself online: Do not give out personal information. This includes your name, school, telephone number, address, photos, credit card numbers, or information about yourself. Also, do not give out information about your friends or family. You do not have to fill out forms or answer questions on the Internet. Beware of online bullying. Bullying happens at online school, too. If you are being bullied online by other students or are receiving abusive messages, tell someone in authority. Do not post anything that could hurt others or have a negative effect. What you post on the Internet may be seen by friends, strangers, teachers, and, later, even colleges and possible employers. Once you post something online, it's very hard to remove it from public view. Protect passwords. Do not to give them to friends (not even your best friend). Being savvy on the Internet is part of being an online learner. Allowing other people access to your passwords may put your schoolwork in danger. Develop good Internet practices when using the Internet. Be careful about opening ads or e-mail from unfamiliar addresses. These can carry viruses, steal personal information, or sign you up for unwanted e-mail and ads. Also, be careful about downloading files or installing software. Balance computer time with other activities. Balance in life is important. Take regular breaks from schoolwork and using the computer. When investigating any online program, ask how much time you will need to be on the computer each week... Evaluate information on the Internet. Do not believe everything you find or receive on the Internet. Learn to tell the difference between reliable and unreliable information. Take the time to investigate this issue with your online school.
