Tui-na is a type of medical massage therapy. Originatingaround 1600 BC, it uses a combination of massage, chiro-practic adjustment, and acupressure points. Tui-na, likeother forms of TCVM, works to promote balance in thebody. It is used for acute musculoskeletal conditions, inaddition to functioning as a preventative treatment. Thistherapy uses several techniques for manipulation of skin, muscle, and joints, including rotary kneading, rubbing, pushing, pressing, pinching, shaking, and stretching. These techniques are used in different combinations tostimulate the meridians and move Qi. From a scientificperspective, the manipulations increase circulation andregulate the nervous system, which in turn stimulates tis-sue and organ function. Tui-na is often used in conjunctionwith acupuncture, but can then be taught to owners forhome care. Food therapy is another facet of TCVM. Once a patterndiagnosis is established, food can be used to further re-solve excesses or deficiencies present at that time. Foodgroups have specific energetic properties, which are influ-enced by factors such as growth rate, husbandry, watercontent, freshness, and food preparation/cooking method. One of the more commonly discussed aspects of food ther-apy is temperature. Ingredients such as protein or vegeta-bles are categorized as cold, cool, neutral, warm, or hot.The proper choice of temperature based on the pattern di-agnosis can have beneficial effects on the body during thehealing process. (Note––we do not recommend formulat-ing a homemade diet without appropriate supplementa-tion or consultation with a veterinary nutritionist.) TCVM allows for a unique approach to your pet andtheir issues, even if they suffer from a common ailmentsuch as arthritis, back pain/paralysis, skin disease, GI dis-orders, cancer, or other chronic disease. Acupuncture andTui-na have little to no side effects, and most herbal medi-cations and food therapy can be used in conjunction withother medications, including chemotherapy. So what happened to Buster? He was started on an acu-puncture, herbal, and exercise regimen. After a singletreatment, he could get up a little easier. After severaltreatments, he was able to go on longer walks and hadmore energy. He no longer gave his owner the look. Bust-er’s overall quality of life improved as his pain was signifi-cantly reduced. careLAofnfogr-dtienrgm L ong-term care in a nursing home is a very real possibility for the majority of Americans. Studies show that somewhere around 75% to 85% of Americans over the age of 65 will spend time in a long-term care facility, like a nursing home, at some point in their lives. Today, the average nursing home in this area will cost you between $5,000 and $8,000 per month. The next question is “How will you pay for it?” Long-term care insurance is one of the best methods, but what if you do not have long-term care insurance or your coverage is insufficient to pay for the costs of the care? Your options to pay for the nursing home bill are much more limited. Besides long-term care insurance, there are three options to cover the costs of a nursing home: you pay, your family pays, or the government (via Medicaid) pays. We hold two free workshops per month in Fishers and hold quarterly workshops in Rockville. Attending a workshop entitles guests to a free consultation with an attorney. \"7 Threats to Your Family’s Security and How To Avoid Them” Space is limited. Reservations required. RAISING CHICKENSHaving chickens is all the rage these days. I consider myself a small-scale chicken farmer, since I only have 5 lovely little chicks. I am raising and caring for beautiful chickens. This sort of makes me a chicken farmer! A few years ago my husband and I visited my brother in Florida and were able to see firsthand how easy having chickens could be. It is a bit costly to start up if you plan on having more than one but ultimately the whole caring for the birds is fairly easy. Luckily the internet is loaded with helpful sites for even the most bizarre questions you may have! We started out with 12 the first time…because my darling husband thought that “mother nature” would handle the overflow. She didn’t! We had 12 producing and thriving laying hens. Keep in mind that one hen lays approximately 1 egg every 26 hours. In reality they lay every day (usually in the morning) and will miss one day here and there. Think about this; 12 chickens laying one egg per day for one week: that’s about 84 eggs in one week…we are a family of 4! Needless to say I gave a lot of eggs away and got very creative with my recipes!20 Indianapolis North LIVING WELL Magazine • Summer 2014

ALEXWHO isTREBEK? BY BARRY ROGERSP EoPLE for $400: He is sharp, knowledgeable, iconic and a clue-giver. Who is Alex Trebek? The world obviously knows that Trebek is the longtime host of Jeopardy! He’s become synony- mous with the game show that embodies knowledge over luck. While you may consider Trebek a lucky man, it’s also his driveand talent that’s put him where he is today. Driven early on in life, theyoung Canadian landed a news and sports broadcasting job, while still incollege. His skill and destiny continued to paved the way, as he went onto host Canadian TV programs, including Music Hop, Vacation Time andReach for the Top. Up next, were American game shows. Trebek has now been in the broadcast and entertainment business forover fifty years, but it is the last thirty that have ultimately defined hiscareer. He set foot on the Jeopardy! stage in 1984. Audiences have tuned-in each week day since, as Trebek oversees the rapid-fire “answer in theform of a question” game show format. The formula seems to be working,as Jeopardy! continues its run, some 6000+ shows and 30 daytime Emmyslater. Longer than Trebek’s time behind the podium on Jeopardy!—is hisenduring friendship with entertainment legend Ruta Lee. The two of themco-hosted the game show High Rollers in 1974. Since then, they’ve re-mained loyal friends—always there for one another if called upon. In fact,he was quick to say yes when Lee asked him to do this interview.Alex, I’ve heard Ruta Lee say that as a friend, you are very lowmaintenance. What are you thoughts? I guess she means that I don’t need a lot of reassurances; a lot of coddling. Will you give us commentary on her as a friend? Ruta’s a delight. She has the kind of exuberance, which I don’t alwaysdemonstrate. Together, we’re an awesome twosome in social situations. She’s also very loyal, very loving, very caring, very generous—plus she’sa fellow Canadian.
