BOOK MARKERThe new book, I Got This by Academy-Award winner Jennifer Hudson is an honest and inspirational story of dreaming big, winning big, and losing big. I Got This is Jennifer’s journey from a girl growing up on Chicago’s SouthSide to performing on the American Idol stage, where she heard not one but numerous re-marks about her look not being right for stardom.Tired of always trying to look the part, and raising a son for whom Jennifer wanted to seta good example, she decided to get healthy. She would lose the weight, once and for all—not for a role, not for a record label, but for herself.Teaming up with Weight Watchers and using their PointsPlus® program, Jennifer learnedhow to think about food differently, and in the process, changed her life for the better. In I Got This, she’ll show you how she embraced Weight Watchers as a realistic, healthyway of life and helps anyone who has ever suffered from a weight problem to do thesame.
On Broadway Five-time Tony winner Audra McDonald sets the stage ablaze with a stunning perfor- mance as Billie Holliday in Lady Day at the Emerson Bar and Grill in New York. Lanie Robertson’s play with music depicts a real-life nightclub performance by the leg- endary Holiday in 1959 Philadelphia, just a few months before her death at age 44. In a near-solo turn, McDonald recreates Holliday’s signature style, crooning 15 of the singer’s iconic tunes including: “God Bless the Child,” “Strange Fruit,” “What a Little Moonlight Can Do,” and “Tain’t Nobody’s Business If I Do.” In between songs, she relates stories from her checkered past including her struggles with drug addiction, numerous arrests, failed relationships and encountering racism as she toured the deep south with Artie Shaw’s band. The only other characters are the three mu- sicians who accompany her. Lonny Price, who directed McDonald in 110 in the Shade and the New York Philharmonic concert production of Sweeney Todd, stages the production. You’ll feel you’re actually in the presence of this musical legend. McDonald interacts with the audience members, this an unfor- gettable show. This show runs until August 2014.
