MURRAY PAYNE Of STANLEY GIBBONS Auction 29 Tuesday 25th July 2017 www.murraypayne.com
Murray PayneMultiples and rarities from the British CommonwealthFeaturing a splendid collection of seldom offered Plate blocks and multiples alongside many rare andunusual items from the British CommonwealthAuction Date: Tuesday 25th JulyLive Internet Bidding on the Saleroom.comBids submitted prior to the Auction to be received by Monday 24th July 12noon BSTMurray Payne TeamManaging Director: Iain Murphy 0207 5574443 [email protected] Director: Dickon Pollard 01934 732511 [email protected] Administrator: Nina Reading 01934 732511 [email protected]: Nigel Orchard 01934 732511 [email protected]: Mia Fisher 01934 732511 [email protected]
Describer’s NotesIt makes a change to have some Great Britain to offer, from a couple of different sources, featuring some scarce booklets andbetter sets in multiples – we haven’t seen blocks of the 1936-7 Postage Dues for a long while.Indeed, ‘multiples’ is the principle theme for the auction. There are an amazing number of blocks of KG VI and QE II issues, mostly from a single collection put together over several decades. Given the current popularity of multiples, particularly Plateand imprint blocks, the realisations should be interesting. We offered the bulk of the British Africa from this collection backin Auction #18, but there were still a few items of interest from this continent left. The Gold Coast line perf blocks (Lot 394)appeared on the collector’s Wants list, sent by fax (yes, it was that long ago) on the Monday before a Philatex show, where wefound this set on the Saturday. We’ve not seen another set since. We have resisted the temptation to lot blocks of later sets, and sets of lesser value, together; most of these will appear on our website for sale by Private Treaty. The Anguilla $2.50 is the first we have handled for years. Bob Hill’s display collection of Barbados provides a tremendousopportunity for someone to pick up the baton. The Bermuda section includes the very rare 1970 (60ct on) 5/- surchargeomitted in a block of four. Brunei features some splendid specialised lots, put together by a very knowledgeable collector. These should be carefully viewed. The Falklands are from several collections and Lot 290 is quite remarkable. The SouthGeorgia ½d watermark sideways is a new find. The Gambia is an interesting section, bought from good sources (as alwayswith our sales, all Specimens have been thoroughly checked).KUT features KG V proofs and some excellent multiples, Lot 478 (on the front cover of this catalogue) being easily the finestPlate block of this stamp we have seen. Lot 468, the 2/- block from the 1939/40 printing, is a great rarity – we have a longwaiting list for even hinged singles of this printing. The Malaya section comes from quite a number of sources and the blocksshould create some interest. The New Hebrides 5d inverted surcharge was in a collection that walked in through our office door – not a stamp we hadseen before. The St Lucia 12ct perf 14½ x 14 block is just one example of the many ‘better’ KG VI perfs in multiples featuredin this sale, and is rarely seen. We received the South Africa 1959 Academy pair, top stamp missing deep blue, just beforegoing to press; only six existed. In between all these gems are many others. We hope you will find something for you to add to your collection!Dickon Pollard
