Savoring the dessert Although she calls her current sugar partners “clients”, Yellow, 29, believes that engaging in sugar relationships doesn’t equate to a job. According to her, more than the transaction and sleeping together, it’s rooted in companionship as she started participating two years ago when she needed to pay a credit card bill. “I needed the funds immediately, so I resorted to this. It went on for only about a week, then I stopped. But November came, I was looking for additional work again, and I couldn’t find one, so I got back to this. It was supposed to be short-lived as well, but it was fun and engaging. So, I’m still here,” narrated Yellow. On her page, she boasts a collection of phallic instruments and blindfolds in shades of pinks and violets with a promise of a good time. Now, she makes about 35k-50k monthly which she regards as the best thing about it, alongside finding lovely people whom she treats as her friends. “If I’m busy, they understand. They just have to be respectful, that’s it. You have to meet the right people, I guess. But I only do this online though, no physical contact with anyone,” she added. Although she thinks there is nothing wrong with it, she pointed out that anyone who wants to try sugar dating must be careful. If someone’s a real sugar daddy, they would pay straight away. That is why they must remember to always ask for payment first, as she stated. “Plus, it’s not only for older people. I met sugar daddies that are of the same age as me, and some are even younger. They’re mostly just busy with their work that they don’t have time to find a girl with the regular setup. Some also say that they don’t have the emotional capacity to handle the conventional dating arrangement, so they resort to this kind of relationship,” explained Yellow. Harsh aftertaste A netizen boldly remarked that the rise of sugar dating is a sign of a failing society, citing that these young people would not choose to live this career if the country’s financial landscape wasn’t too barren and unstable. It also exposes them to exploitation―other sugar babies divulged that they experienced being hit and put under intense circumstances that they don’t consent to. Ultimately, sugar dating is a dangerous game to dabble in. Having no definite rules, to begin with, it rests upon oneself to draw the limits. But when the course gets blurred; and lines get crossed, no one can tell if the cards have been played right. Some win, and they win big. But if they lose, the sweetness in life that they have been craving for might turn out to be a bitter pill all long. 50 | ADVO MAG CULTURES
So tell me, WHAT ARE YOUR PRONOUNS? Text | Clark Alduz Viray Artwork | Israel Martin de Chavez Photo | Elaine Mapagdalita 51|ADVO MAG FEATURES
Words hold a special power. A sincere praise can bring the most genuine smile on the face of a person who was having the worst day of his or her life. A slip of the tongue can end a relationship founded on years’ worth of trust. And for members of the LGBTQ+ community, the right words can not only make them feel accepted, but can also be a major step towards a more inclusive Philippines. Historical context While most of us have been indoctrinated to the use “On a personal level, it is extremely important. If of pronouns based on the sexuality assigned to us we cannot even acknowledge on a personal level the after birth, recent years saw the resurfacing of the use existence of members of the LGBT and recognize of “gender pronouns” when referring or talking to an them as co - equal human beings with the same rights individual. and privileges as any of us, then all is lost,” stated Mr. Tolentino. For Emmanuel Rigoberto G. Tolentino, a graduate of Development Communication-Major in Development It may come as a surprise for many to know that the from the University of the Philippines, Los Baños, the use of gender inclusive pronouns has been prevalent in increased use of gender pronouns in the Philippines is countries all over the world as early as the 13th century, a sign that our country is becoming more accepting of as seen on a work by William of Palerne, where he members of the LGBTQ+ community. used the pronoun “they” as a gender-neutral identifier. In some of his works, even Shakespeare used gender neutral pronouns to refer to his characters. One of the most recent literature that tackles the crucial role of pronouns in our contemporary society is Dennis Baron’s “What are your pronouns? Beyond he and she.” The book shed some light on the said topic by revisiting how the struggle for a gender inclusive language has been a dilemma that has been ongoing for centuries. Words of affirmation In a predominantly Catholic country like the Philippines, the acceptance of members of the LGBTQ+ community has been growing for the past few years, especially since the passage of House Bill No. 4982 or the SOGIE Bill. With the approval of the said bill, comes hope for our LGBTQ+ brothers and sisters, as they are given another layer of protection against discrimination. “Religion plays a huge part in the patriarchal, male – dominated mindset that is prevalent in Philippine society today. This has given way to the large – scale, state – directed and sponsored impunity, misogyny and disrespect that has become the norm rather than the exception (in our country),” shared Mr. Tolentino. One way of showing one’s support for the SOGIE Bill and our LGBTQ+ brothers and sisters is by addressing them in their preferred pronouns. Additionally, one must always remember that despite their interchangeable use, sex and gender are not the same thing. While one’s sex is defined by genetic factors, only the person themself can know their gender identity. “There’s always a right and wrong way to do things. The bottom line and one thing that everyone should be mindful of is that it should always be respectful, dignified and one that is grounded on recognizing individual sensibilities so as not to either offend or cause any undue harm,” advised Mr. Tolentino. 52 | ADVO MAG FEATURES
Beyond pronouns Other issues that arose due to the current move for the use of gender inclusive pronouns are misgendering and deadnaming. Misgendering happens when someone assumes the sexual orientation of another person while deadnaming is when someone uses the pre-transitioning name of a transgender person, whether deliberately or by accident. “It’s quite sad that the media and the entertainment business appear to be at the forefront of such uncalled for behavior. Even if it’s done as a joke to elicit laughter, it is still demeaning for the person concerned. We have to remember that jokes are half meant truths. That it’s widespread and people don’t call it out for improper behavior makes it appear normal and ok which is wrong and inappropriate on many levels,” lamented Mr. Tolentino. By asking someone about the pronouns they go by, the aforementioned dilemmas could be easily avoided. The use of right pronouns denotes respect and acceptance for the other person, as it removes the notion that someone must possess only binary attributes, or must look a particular way in order to be addressed appropriately. “It really is not much of a concern for me and that’s the reason I hardly notice if the practice (of addressing a person by his/her/their preferred pronouns) is prevalent or even if people bother to do so. Or perhaps I belong to an industry where being different is more the norm than the exception,” added Mr. Tolentino. A long way to go If there is one thing that is proven by the re-emergence of the call for the use of the right pronouns of members of the LGBTQ+ community in our country, it is that we, Filipinos, are starting to be more open minded and are slowly starting to leave the confines of the social constructs which has been limiting their freedom and rights for years. “It’s going to take the whole of society, coming together and making a conscious effort to make a stand for acceptance, diversity and inclusivity for the members of the LGBT to break that proverbial glass ceiling. And it most certainly will take more than using the proper pronoun to truly and genuinely recognize, accept, respect, embrace and celebrate the LGBT community. It’s an important step in the right direction, but more needs to be done,” ended Mr. Tolentino. 53|ADVO MAG FEATURES
GUILTY or NOT GUILTY PUT A FINGER DOWN BRAHMAN EDITION Text | Faith Valen Villanueva Artwork | Angelo Mendenilla Greetings in school hallways and stairs in the early hours turned into online chit-chats. THREADING OVER THE NARROW LINES An Analysis on Nas Daily’s Whang-Od Academy havoc Text | Arielle Dane Adan Photo | Nas Daily, Travel Now, & Metroscene 58 | ADVO MAG CULTURES
“WARNING! WHANG OD ACADEMY IS A SCAM!” On the morning of Aug. 4, a war cry from Apo Whang-Od’s grandniece, Grace Palicas, resounded online, sparking an uproar against Nuseir Yassin, the Israeli-Palestinian vlogger behind Nas Daily. In the post, she explained that her grandmother did not sign any contract with the influencer about a masterclass that could expose them to people and take advantage of them for money. It seems that the Butbut Tribe, who were once notorious for their headhunting practices to protect their ancestral lands from foreign invasion, is facing another battle with a new adversary who dared to exploit their art and culture. Breaching borders Buscalan, a small, secluded heaven sitting atop the mountainous landscape of the Kalinga province in Northern Luzon, opened its gates in the early 2000s to share one of its wondrous gifts to the world―the 1,000-year-old art of batok initially only passed down to Butbut tribesmen with tattooing ancestry. Even so, Apo Whang-Od exhibited an innate talent for the art, compelling her father to make an exception and thus, teaching her. Armed with calamansi or pomelo thorns, soot, and a bamboo hammer, the living legend had engraved her signature marks on the skin of successful headhunters of their tribe at the start of her career at 15. Now, almost 90 years later, thousands of local and foreign tourists brave the trek to Buscalan to get inked by the last living mambabatok. Furthermore, Apo Whang-Od consecutively broke customs by only training women, appointing her grandnieces, Grace, and Elyang, to be her apprentices since she doesn’t have her children. But there’s a barrier that Apo Whang-Od resolutely backs away from breaking through―her belief that the tattooing tradition should only stay inside the lineage of their tribe; otherwise, the resulting tattoo would be tainted. Hence, it became a baffling announcement when Nas Daily, the content creator known for his one-minute video clips, revealed in late June that the 104-year-old tattoo artist would be part of Nas Academy for a P750 online course on traditional tattooing and unveil of all her rituals, tools, and methods. 59|ADVO MAG CULTURES
Locked in a tangle Three days after the accusation against Yassin, his Facebook page dramatically lost about half a million followers even after taking down the course temporarily and defending himself thru a video showing that Apo Whang-Od, with the guidance of some of her relatives, affixing her thumbprint on a contract while experts insist that this wasn’t enough. In the Facebook post of a cultural anthropologist, Dr. Nestor Castro, he stated that Nas Daily didn’t understand Kalinga culture since Apo Whang-od is not just an individual artist but also a member of the Butbut Tribe who derived her indigenous skill of tattooing from generations of Kalinga ancestors and thus, making it a collective property of the group. Therefore, the vlogger should have sought the consent of the members of the trib upon the knowledge to be passed down to people outside their bloodline. Moreover, there’s an existing local law that Nas Daily disregards―the Indigenous Peoples Rights Act (IPRA). When the knowledge of indigenous peoples is used for commercial purposes, the law requires the influencer to acquire free and prior informed consent (FPIC) from the members of the Butbut Tribe, which should be written in English and the local Kinalingga language and witnessed by the National Commission for Indigenous Peoples (NCIP). Where the lines are drawn But instead of giving an outright apology, Nas Daily remained adamant by justifying his actions amidst an elaborate blame- game mechanism of Pinoy-baiting, a marketing strategy designed to target Filipinos for mass views and engagements; and ad hominem barbs attempted to cover up his tracks of crossing the thin line between understanding a culture. According to Rogers (2006), in his study about cultural appropriation, cultural exploitation is one of its types wherein the elements of a subordinated culture are taken by a dominant culture without substantive reciprocity, permission, compensation, understanding, or appreciation. Meanwhile, cultural appreciation truly happens only when a person takes their time to learn about the culture they are interested in and honor their beliefs and traditions, not for one’s gain—money or fame. Fortunately, more than two months later, a team from Nas Academy hiked to Buscalan for a heartfelt customary reconciliation process with Apo Whang-Od and the Butbut Tribe, organized by NCIP, which concluded in a shared meal and granting the request of the tribal leader for the previous contract to be declared null and void. Tying up loose ends The past of the fierce Butbut Tribe was written with struggles that ended in bloodbaths, such as their successful resistance against the Spanish colonization or the tragedy of Macliing Dulag, who opposed the Chico Dam Project of the dictator Ferdinand Marcos. But unlike before, the rift between Nas Daily and Apo Whang-Od climaxed in friendship and mutual understanding, with a lesson imparting that culture is something that is received when shared but never taken by force. 60 | ADVO MAG CULTURES
Fist in the air, taking a stand #Tumindig; from an online trend to a national movement Text | Angel Joy Liwag Artwork | Tarantadong Kalbo Tumindig verb tu • min • dig Definition of tumindig to stand firm 1 pagbangon mula sa kinalugmukan; 2 maaaring gamitin bilang pangngalan, pandiwa, o pang-uri; at 3 ginagamit din upang ipakita ang isang paniniwala A piece of art, a symbol of hope—what started as a square canvas on blue palette background that emphasizes on one raised fist around knee-bent fist bumps ended as the #Tumindig trend. With the caption, ‘Artista ng Bayan, Ngayon ay Lumalaban [...] #Tumindig’, visual artist and animator known as Tarantadong Kalbo who is the illustrator of the viral artwork not just garner artists and critics as he also attracted National Democratic Mass Organizations (NDMO’s) and other collective groups asserting a unified stand against the social and political climate in the country. “Tarantadong Kalbo never persuaded, never forced, or asked anyone to follow his #Tumindig [movement]. It just happened suddenly, naturally, organically, ‘yun lang. ‘Yun ang kagandahan nu’n, parang naging organic lang siya tapos umabot ng hatinggabi tapos nag-trending na siya,” stated Cartoonist ZACH, member of Cartooning for Peace who also participated in the #Tumindig movement. 61|ADVO MAG FEATURES
Silence and resonance Supposedly, the illustration was deemed as the Filipino artist’s usual representation of dissent towards the current administration, specifically when certain government officials and fanatics tagged Patricia Non’s community pantry initiative as a rebellious act against the government. “After the issue, ni-publish ni Tarantadong Kalbo ‘yung artwork and it became viral in itself, standalone lang. Si Kapitan Tambay ‘yung pinakauna talaga na nag-publish ng version niya. Ako naman, someone tagged me, sabi nila sa akin, “Uy, Zach! Why not do this also?” So ayun, gumawa ako ng sarili kong version, ‘yung avatar ko. So ‘yun, ako ‘yung pangatlo and the rest is history,” recalled Cartoonist ZACH. Perhaps the reason on the shift of the #Tumindig from trend into movement is the long due fear of crossing the mandates under the present administration such as the closure of big media franchise of ABS-CBN, the passing of the Anti-Terror Law, and the existence of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) agency in this democratic country. “Dahil sa naging widespread na ang trolls and our culture na we have relatives but we don’t usually talk about politics with them kasi parang it will create conflict. So what are you gonna do? You’re going to be silent. So ‘yung spaces natin, ang daming nagpe-play safe,” told the cartoonist. From animation to mobilization With that, a community from multi- sectoral groups bearing arms that eyes for change have been united through the viral movement. Not only they have put representation behind social media as they went through streets waving plastic bottles, paper mache, placards, and the likes during protests when the Executive President Rodrigo Roa Duterte has made his State of the Nation Address (SONA). “What is more surprising is that it actually inspired kahit hindi artists, kahit nasa labas ng komik or cartooning industry, they were inspired to follow. It inspired ordinary people from different sectors, church representatives, and kahit mga organizations. Mero’n ding mga artista, banda, NGOs. Regardless of political affiliation, doon sila na-inspire,” expressed Cartoonist ZACH. Moreover, the movement also sparked discourse on the present conditions of political fanatics. Some have condemned and insulted the movement as they believed the #Tumindig movement as an anti- government approach. “We want the government to succeed by doing what it is supposed to do. Government is for the people, by doing its mandated responsibilities, we’re all for the common good of the people. If we still continue to be silent, then how can the government see kung saan sila nagkamali? They will continue to make that mistake, and when they do that, it has a huge cost kasi they’re wasting public funds, and that’s also depriving the people who need the help,” added the curator. 62 | ADVO MAG FEATURES

Never to be missed in every Batangueños’ breakfast table is a piping hot cup of coffee to start our days filled with warmth and the aroma of a hopeful day. Such was the popularity of the said drink among the Batangueños that sprawled across the province are coffee shops that serve as a refuge for early birds, nocturnals, and midday hustlers. When we think of cafes, with all their warm and cozy splendour, is an imagery of aromatic coffee scent, large cushioned armchairs, mellow acoustic playlists, and neutral- colored interiors. But an up and rising coffee house in town chose not to confine itself within the four corners of traditional indoor cafes, presenting an odd yet refreshing image of coffee houses. Situated in the busy outdoors of Pallocan West, Batangas City, Kalye Barako was launched early this year with the thought of bringing the authentic taste of Batanguenos’ bread and butter, kapeng barako, at the comfort of its local coffee lovers. Kape-turing authentic extravagance Sourcing out coffee beans from the fertile lands of Lipa and Cavite, Kalye Barako produces top-notch products embracing the true essence of what it truly means to be a “barakong Batañgueno.” “Bakit mayroon tayong Benguet coffee? Apart from the humble-rooted Barako and Benguet coffee, joining the ranks of Kalye Barako’s best sellers is its milk-based salted caramel drink. Its smooth, refreshing taste is perfect for customers who enjoy minimal caffeine consumption. This fan-favorite is made fresh with the tedious process of coffee brewing and straining to get the richest caffeine flavors. “The secrets in satisfying the customers is hindi consistency. Actually, ‘yun ang mga linya ng mga café—consistency. Pero hindi ‘yun ang binibigay namin sa customer. Binibigay namin sa kanila is freshness. So we make sure everything is fresh, hindi consistent, kasi gumagamit kami ng mga product na kami mismo ‘yung gumagawa,” added Mr. Magbuhos. Cream of the crop Success is truly a continuous journey, which is why apart from its alfresco cafe in Pallocan West, Kalye Barako also extends the products and services of its humble enterprise through a rolling van that operates in some of the busiest streets of Batangas City. “Actually ‘yun talaga ang plan before. Medyo mataas ‘yung price na-project namin kasi we have to purchase a van. Indeed, being unique characterizes anything. As for Kalye Barako, this is depicted by peculiar tastes and unusual ambiances popular in the palates and preferences of Batangueno youngsters. Mr. Magbuhos took the right risk with Kalye Barako’s coffee—strong beyond words yet sweet enough in the face of adversity. “We’re gonna keep hustling to provide you the best quality coffee in Batangas City,” ended Mr. Magbuhos. 66 | ADVO MAG FEATURES

For most of the 2010s, we were all but noobs in the bizarre shenanigans of the social media sphere. Left overwhelmed by the concept of likes, retweets, and reblogs, we mindlessly flooded our friends and followers’ timelines with the most random #skl tweets or the most unrealistic #jwu selfies. Unfortunately, no amount of throwback Thursdays can lead us back to these un-trying times. In this thriving society, “think before you click” is no longer a cliché slogan; but a critical warning to be accountable for all that we have to say— most especially in the abstract notions of social media that gave birth to what we now know as cancel culture. Mother has arrived with the newest drag-sensation, Drag Race Philippines. From plain canvases to goddess incarnates, queens in extravagant costumes strut the runway while showcasing a new version of themselves. More than amusement for all the artistic glitz and glamour, the craft of drag represents the rights, values, and expressions of the LGBTQIA+ community. Thrill for heels With its massive success, RuPaul’s Drag empire has been expanding to other territories and finally reached the Philippines with its upcoming franchise announced by the drag matriarch last August. Much to the enthusiasm of a notable Filipino fanbase, the season features the same mechanics as Rupaul’s Drag Race, including the runway, the skits, and the grand lip sync for the crown. Even before the show enters the Filipino television scene, conflicts are now being stirred into some sort of tea. Before the Drag Race Philippines launch, renowned Filipino-American drag queen Manila Luzon became known as the host of a relative drag-themed Filipino series called Drag Den Philippines. “I hope na matuloy talaga s’ya, and what I expect is sana makilala din tayong mga Pilipino na may talent din pagdating sa drag race,” added Maralit. Expectations and anticipation riddle every glamazon’s mind as they buckle up for the upcoming Drag Race PH. Though this appears to be an incoming conflict of support, there is no doubt that the arrival of these drag competitions in the Philippines is something the fans have been waiting for. DRAGGED DOWN The arrival of drag in the local scene received contrasting perspectives from the Filipino community, where the LGBTQIA+ community, especially transwomen, are often just given the bare minimum in everything. “The LGBTQ community in the Philippines is not holistically accepted, just tolerated; for we live amongst Christian people, and as the Bible would have proclaimed that men are only created for women and vice versa. We have been held so much to the standards of society that showing the real us is also rejected,” expressed Anton Jeremy Evangelio, BS Psychology-II. This inequality does not present itself only in blatant oppression and injustices but also manifests through undertones hidden in prejudices towards the not-so- heavy things such as entertainment. The community’s safety is already threatened by non-acceptance, so one can only imagine the storm that would ensue from the promotion of something as symbolic as drag. “There has been, and there will be negative connotations against the LGBTQ community, regardless of the upcoming drag show in the Philippines. The ratings of the show may be lower than regular TV shows that people normally watch. It can pose threats and even turn the show into a meme. It would still make the gays as a laughing stock, which should not be and never will be,” added Evangelio. Even if representation and inclusivity still struggle against gender-based issues, it is never too wrong to promote a platform that allows members of the LGBTQIA+ community to flaunt the majestic queens that they are. 72 | ADVO MAG FEATURES
HATERS, SASHAY AWAY! The reeking presence of transphobia fails to upstage the fans’ excitement for the show. Admiring drag icons from continents is magnificent, but having its localized version with a myriad of more relatable characters, culture, inside jokes, settings, and costumes is even more thrilling. “Gays are not just comedians. They can be more than just that and be the person people can look up to. If watched by kids that are part of the LGBTQ, it would inspire them to be more of what they are. Drag shows are not just about how these gays dress themselves up and put makeup on. It is an expression that they can become a voice of the unheard in our community,” stated Evangelio. More than drag’s artful facade, it will shine as an emblem of representation for the oppressed LGBTQIA+ community. An open windows to a variety of its members—be it for a seven-year-old fond of donning blanket- made gowns at the family’s salu-salo, for a teenage queen who is a veteran of their barangay’s gay pageant, or even for those not yet ready to share their colors to the universe. “The thing about Pinoys is they are stagnant, they feel a little amount of change, and they instantly fire back, and that could change. Maybe, just maybe, if these people could hear thoughts from the drag queens themselves, the different challenges and paths they have to go through to be there, maybe they would listen,”ended Evangelio. Drag Race PH is on its way, or rather, on its runway, to serve and slay supporters thirsty for another wave of glitter fest—and we are all here for it. 73|ADVO MAG FEATURES
BEATING THE RED LIGHT NLINE: which among characters are you? Making history as the first non-English series to be nominated for the Screen Actors Guild, the Korean-based Netflix hit series, Squid Game, has taken the world by storm with people joining the trend of playing Korean childhood games such as tug of war and hopscotch, even cosplaying their fave characters in the series. But away from the fun and thrill of recreating various aspects of the series, Squid Game is best represented by its rustic depiction of the sacrifices and betrayals we dive into when faced with troubling circumstances. From harmless players to hungry beasts, who will you choose to be as a player? 1. It’s examination week, and you found a good source online for review. What would you do? A. The final verdict: If you answered mostly A’s, you’re a lot like Seong Gi-hun aka Player 456. In the series, he constantly brags about Cho Sang-woo’s intelligence. He chose an old man as his partner despite having other options. As warm and accommodating as 456, you are the type who knows everyone in the class. A teacher’s pet in a good way, you’re the type of student who informs the class regarding due dates where you are offered as a sacrificial lamb to request for an extension of homework deadline. Guess you’ve encircled B a lot? Then, you resonate with Player 218, Cho Sang-woo. He is an alumnus of South Korea’s top university and is called a “legend” by his neighborhood for his intelligence. Like him, you are an intellectual player who knows how to outsmart your opponents for your personal and professional aim. Voila, for your C-majored answers! You are rocking it like Player 067, who is Kang Sae-byeok when not in the game. She is a North Korean defector who earns money through pickpocketing to protect her brother, who lives in an orphanage, sustains to free her mother from the North, and if lucky enough, purchases a house for her family. Similar to Sae-byeok, you know what you want and how you will earn it beyond the limits imposed by your female genetics or your lack of educational attainment. If your answers are mostly in D’s, then you’re a lot like Player 212, Han Mi-nyeo. Somewhat a mysterious player, she claims to have a newborn who is willing to sacrifice every inch of your being to win. Like Player 212, you see victory right before your eyes and your tactic to claim it is to team up with the strongest person in the room. The real gems of every story, whether in an online class setup or the series Squid Game, lie along each personality’s way of exposing the blindfolded system. With all the mentioned characters, your decision of alignment says a lot about you.

HOT STUFF: Lorde’s New Album redefines Power Text | Katherine Nicole Lontok Photo | Variety, Genius, OK Magazine, & UPI “I just hope the sun will show us the path.” showbiz down to the summers she spent hibernating from her Lorde returns with the light we’ve all been looking for. music career. But paying homage to her musical heroes, she After a four-year hiatus in the music scene, Indie royalty, revealed that it was from Primal Scream’s 1990 hit, ‘Loaded’, Lorde, brought the world below her feet with her new album, where she drew inspiration in naming the album’s title track, Solar Power, as this prodigious comeback embodied self- Solar Power. awareness, empowerment, and healing through its serene rhythm and cryptic words people cannot easily fathom. In contrast to her cryptic lyrics in her debut release Royals, Through this album, Lorde made both ends of her spectrum Lorde’s new album incorporated a change in delivery with meet—from the days she was drenched in the limelight of immaculate-sounding pitches and emotionally expressive lyrics depicted by the 12 tracks on a 43-minute running time. The path Embracing a rather eerie opening, The Path takes its listeners to a dark period of Lorde’s life under the limelight for a museum tour. The slightly preternatural sound was short-lived as the song brings forth its tantalizing, upbeat melody that is rather unfitting for its lyrics that denounces herself as anyone’s savior. The song calls out to those who only know how to receive but never return. In Lorde’s perspective, these are people who relied on her but never returned the same energy. Amongst the tracks, The Path takes the cake for bringing the reality check we never knew we needed. As many of us weighed by the cross that we are not even meant to carry, this song slaps a deep reality that we are, indeed, not responsible for the happiness of anyone—close ties or not. Solar power had all the time to reflect upon her trips and collapse while maneuvering over the potholes of her peculiar, overwhelming The familiar sight of cerulean seas and crashing waves was celebrity life. sublimely captured by the empowering and reassuring title track, Solar Power. California, where the sunlight shoots arrows “But it got hard to grow up with your cool hand around my neck.” There’s no better way to say goodbye from an empty and detrimental phase of your life than the song ‘California.’ Through the cryptic lyrics of the song, Lorde welcomed us to a part of her past that was filled with alcohol; toxic connections, and chaos. In some way, this song drives its listeners to let go of that destructive, toxic and miserable period. Further strengthening the theme, California describes healing as a process of overcoming past traumas by admitting to yourself that it did form part of your identity— no matter how unfavorable it was. Fallen fruit This song from the captivating summer album released by the anticipated indie singer enkindled autumn with its calm melody and acoustic guitar background. Fallen Fruit brings forth a subtle tune with lyrics of absolute protest, criticism, and call for action. “But how can I love what I know I’m going to lose?” Fallen Fruit captures the guilt carried by people who realize how we, humans, have come to destroy the nature we have claimed to love. It tells the story of how our perilous activities and the things we produce have become toxic to the nature we used to connect to. Mood ring In an interview with Genius’ website, Lorde mentioned how she has been deeply interested in new age culture and incorporated “The Fear” by Lily Allen into the writing process of this song. Unlike other tracks included in the album, Lorde told Genius that Mood Ring was more satirical than reflective of her own opinions. This song paints the image of a young woman with all the joys in life but is still in constant misery and pain. She used ‘Mood Ring’ as a metaphorical representation of the things human beings do to feel whole and to keep their spiritual wellness in check. Overall, this track aims to capture our reliance towards inanimate and oftentimes unnecessary objects for spiritual comfort, yet it does not criticize our need for it and deem it as something rather natural to human beings. Oceanic feeling Submerged in water, bubbles rising as one attempts to breathe, and slowly reaching out to the light reflections seeping through the sea’s surface— ’Oceanic Feeling’ captured this imagery flawlessly. This song tells us a story of falling and rising again by putting into words the phenomenon many of us are familiar with: the suffocation of being overwhelmed and pressured. Encapsulated within the song are two distinct melodies telling a chronicle of emotions—from being suffocated with a painful past and being able to come to terms with it. The mellow voice of Lorde emphasized the melancholy of the story she was trying to tell. An exclamation point to Solar Power’s relative tracklist, Oceanic Feeling, was used by Lorde to translate into an ecstatic tune the fulfilling taste of empowerment after rising from a suffocating disposition once in her life. Redefining strength Beyond the cryptic lyricism, Solar Power reconstructs the essence of empowerment inherent to us despite being stuck in such a stagnant but chaotic period. Power is being able to admit one’s shortcomings, face the parts that we often turn away from, and begin healing. Indeed, it is a worth-the-wait album that came at a time we needed it most. It expresses the comfort we need in the middle of the pandemic, trying to cope and mend old and new wounds, fears, and trauma. Phenomenal and entrancing, Solar Power has truly embossed its name on this year’s grandest releases. 89|ADVO MAG FEATURES
MATRON OF THE LEGION: a short film review on BEAUTY QUEEN Text | Jane Therese Banaag Photo | Business World & Adobo Magazine Not all heroes wear capes, some of them put on bold red lipsticks. Cultivating Compassion: Delivering agricultural advancement through Farm Box Text | Nixon De Villa Photo | farmboxonline.com With an astounding number of natural farmlands and agricultural resources, the Philippines boasts a number of reliable agricultural projects, developments, and opportunities.
