MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR & CEO Thanks to generous support of the Jewish Federation, our Jewish community not only weathered the pandemic, but also renewed hope. During 2020–21, the Federation gave help and optimism to the greatest number of people the organization has ever touched in one year. After intense collaboration with Jewish agencies and boosted by a bold leadership gift of $2.5 million from the Jewish Healthcare Foundation, the Federation raised and distributed more than $9 million in COVID relief. This amount was over and above the millions in operating support that the Federation supplied to our agency partners. The agencies told us: Federation pandemic relief literally enabled them to keep their doors open as the number of people in need exploded. I urge you to read the Federation’s annual report at jewishpgh.org/annual-report and to learn how your support of the Federation was a lifeline to individuals. You helped the 100-year-old isolated in memory care, the struggling working parent, the lonely student, the vulnerable and hungry community member. You helped Ethiopian Jews awaiting emigration and homebound seniors in Jerusalem. The Federation’s extraordinary COVID relief effort did not stop other Jewish Federation activities. Young adult events moved online, providing necessary social interaction. The Federation helped young people travel to Israel to explore their Jewish identity. The Jewish Community Foundation’s Grinspoon LIFE & LEGACY® program secured 65 new endowments to sustain local Jewish organizations. As antisemitism spiked locally and worldwide, the Federation’s security operation maintained constant vigilance. As rockets targeted Israelis, the Federation rushed relief to people under fire. The challenges of the year yielded proof that the Federation model works. Generous donors gave $13.675 million to the Community Campaign, and the Jewish Community Foundation grew to $335 million in assets under management. We leveraged additional dollars from government, corporate sponsors, and foundations. And we thank the Jewish Healthcare Foundation for its $900,000 block grant. The result was a record fundraising total of $52.6 million in 2020–21. This includes a record $26.9 million in additions to the Foundation — additions that will serve our future community needs. The Federation distributed a record $44.6 million, including COVID relief. In meeting the year’s challenges, the Federation stretched and learned. We captured many of the lessons in a new set of strategic priorities that we look forward to sharing with you during the year to come. With your continuing support, the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh will open the windows of opportunity that 2020–21 revealed. We will continue to repair our community as well as to renew it. HOW FEDERATION WORKS The Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh is the heart of Jewish Pittsburgh — the central fundraising, planning and community-building organization of the Jewish community. Donor-advised funds allow you to donate cash or securities to a fund that bears your name, receive an immediate charitable income tax deduction for contributions and retain — for you or your family or a designated person — the right to recommend charitable distributions from the fund to any qualified charity. Endowment funds provide a permanent source of income for the Jewish Federation’s Community Campaign, a particular agency or even a specific field of interest or program. Creating an endowment may provide an immediate tax benefit in the year the endowment is funded. Legacy Funds are permanent endowment funds in the Jewish Community Foundation that perpetuate your commitment to the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh’s Community Campaign.
