The rabi crop is ready for harvest; the fields are lush green and heavy with the grains; it is a season of plenty. Naturally the mood of the people in the villages is one of joy. What better things to do than to celebrate, to sing and dance? That’s what Baisakhi is all about; it is a community for the festival. The men and women dance the robust and energetic bhangra and giddha. People wear bright coloured traditional dresses for the festival. Traditionally the festivities take place on the banks of rivers. People eat ‘rotis’ made out of freshly ground atta (wheat flour) along with desi ghee and gud (jiggery). On the whole, it is a day of merry-making and feasting. A bonfire is lit, and the dances are performed around it. For the Sikhs, Baisakhi also marks the beginning of the Khalsa Movement. It was on this day, that the tenth Guru, Gobind Singh, initiated the Khalsa Movement of the Sikh brotherhood in 1699. For Hindus, it is the start of the second month of New Year after Chaitr, and is celebrated with requisite bathing, partying, and worshipping. It’s believed that thousands of years ago, Goddess Ganga descended to earth and in her honour, many Hindus gather along the sacred Ganges River for ritual baths. The action is centered in the holy cities along the Ganges in north India, or in Srinagar’s Mughal Gardens, Jammu’s Nagbani Temples, or anywhere in Tamil Nadu. Hindus plant poles (wrapped in flags of gold-embroidered silk) in front of their homes, and hang pots of brass, copper or silver on top. Swami Dayanand Saraswati founded the Arya Samaj on vaisakha, Vesak or Weasak. It commemorated the birth, the Awakening and the Enlightened Passing Away of Gautama Buddha who was born as prince Siddhartha. NOVEL-Long Reading Text 11. Answer one of the following questions in about 100-120 words: (10 marks) Gulliver was not able to tolerate the company of human beings but enjoyed the company of the two stone-horses he bought after returning home. What did it tell you about the sea change that had come on him? Did it seem logical to you? Ans. It tells us that, alas, he was able to bring some peace within him. He hated the smell of humans as he had come to know how bad they were. He hated to live with his wife and children because they did not appeal to him anymore. His admiration was solely for the horses or Houyhnhms. So in order to do justice to his liking, he bought two stone-horses, reared them in his own house, and took great care of them. He stayed near them at least four hours every day. He was able to enjoy their company that way. He did not use any bridle or saddle on them, there by proving that they deserved to be treated respectfully and not as beasts meant for carrying people of pulling loads/carriages. He felt his spirits had revived by the smell he came across in the stable. He found mental peace as he was near to those whom he adored. These sea change that had come upon him prove that Gulliver was then at complete peace with himself. He thought it was perfectly logical on his part to live with the horses in his home. Or Explain the kind of life spent by the noblemen, according to Gulliver. Ans. Gulliver said that the noblemen in his country were very different from the impression which he (the master) had about them. He said that the young noblemen were bred from their childhood in idleness and luxury and that as their age progressed they found themselves depleted in strength and contacted extremely unpleasant diseases by frequenting with lewd females. Gulliver said that when their fortunes were almost ruined they married some woman of mean birth, disagreeable nature, of unsound constitution, just for their money. They hated and despised such women and the off springs of such marriages produced sickly, unhealthy and deformed children. Due to this unhealthy environment, the family seldom continued beyond three generations, unless the wife took care to provide a healthy father, chosen from among her neighbours or servants in their homes, in order to improve and continue the breed. Gulliver added that a weak diseased body, a small face, and a pale complexion are the true marks of a nobleman and a healthy robust appearance is so disgraceful in a nobleman, that the word concludes his real father must have been a groom or a coachman. Gulliver also said that without the permission of this sickly nobility no law could be enacted, and that the citizens had no way to appeal against the decisions taken by the nobility. For whom according to the narrator, was Barley Mow inn at Clifton not a suitable place to live in? Give reasons. Ans. The quaintest, most old-world in up the river was Barley Mow inn at Clifton. It Stood on the right of the bridge, quite away from the village. It was not a “suitable place for the heroine of a modern novel to stay at,” according to the narrator. He believed that heroines were always “divinely and ever “drawing herself up to her full height”. He felt that at that inn she would have bumped her head against the ceiling each time she drew herself to her full height. The narrator also felt that the inn would have been a bad house for a drunken man to stay at. He said that there were too many surprises in the way of unexpected steps down into each room; and, as for getting upstairs to his bedroom or ever finding his bed when he had got up, either operation would have been an utter impossibility to him. Or What was the effect of the song two lovely black eyes” on the narrator and Harris? Ans. The song “Two Lovely Black Eyes” affected the narrator and Harris in a very emotional manner. They fell upon each other’s necks and wept; with great effort they kept back the rising tears, and listened to the wild mournful melody in silence. When the chorus came, they made a desperate attempt to be merry. They refilled their glasses and joined in; Harris in a voice trembling with emotion, leading and the narrator and George following a few words behind. They broke down the unutterable pathos of George’s accompaniment to that song. That was their state of depression they were unable to bear. Harris sobbed like a little child and the dog howled till the narrator thought his heart or his jaw must surely break.
