A century of inspirational education for bright girls...
Thank you for your interest in joining us here at Torquay Girls’ Grammar School. We have been educating bright girls from Devon for over one hundred years now. The outcomes forgirls who come here are excellent; our academic results place us as one of the top schools nationallyfor both attainment and progress. Ofsted rated us outstanding in all categories and our students go onto top universities, apprenticeships and employment opportunities. However, these facts do not convey the real essence of our school, which is more about a way ofthinking. It is about helping bright girls to believe they can achieve anything and giving them the skillsto do so.We are high achieving and proud of it; we are not afraid to celebrate the elite whether in the sphereof academia, sport or the arts. However, because we know that students work better when they arehappy and relaxed, we also have an enormous amount of fun. Our strong house culture means thatstudents are involved in activities like our whole school sponsored walk from Brixham back to Torquay, and the House Shout where students and staff from each house sing a song to the rest of the school.Student themselves run many events, like our TOP of the Form and Bake Off competitions, as well as theMovie Club. Our extra-curricular opportunities cement the skills we nurture through clubs, teams and events or onthe 150 plus trips that we provide annually. Trips locally to the Marine Aquarium or Eden project, tripsnationally such as to the Old Bailey or Globe Theatre, and international trips which have seen our girlsride horses across Mongolia, visit art museums in New York, scuba dive in Cuba, walk across glaciers inIceland and ride camels in India. We are proud of our pastoral system where, as a smaller school, we get to know all our students well.Staff respond quickly and efficiently to ensure that girls feel happy and secure. We believe that beinga single sex school enables us to focus on the style of learning, and particularly the social environment,in which girls feel most comfortable. They are not embarrassed to speak out, take part or hold strongviews. They are enthusiastic about taking on responsibilities and few suffer “teenage cynicism” aboutbeing keen or clever: on the contrary, they are full of enthusiasm for a great many things – includingschool! They want us to know all about their achievements and their lives outside school. We have worked tirelessly to provide the best facilities for learning possible. In recent years the additionof many new buildings such as our state-of-the-art Drama & Music block, Sixth Form building, Archive,Amphitheatre and Sports Hall assist us in providing the best learning environment possible. As the only state, selective girls school in the area we believe that this is a very special and uniqueplace in which to learn. Students here can achieve anything they desire.I wish you and your daughter every success and encourage you to apply.Dr Nick SmithHeadteacher
We know that moving up to secondary schoolcan be a big step and because of this we makea big effort to ensure that it is a smooth andenjoyable experience.Linking girls with a Y7 buddy who will write tothem, having an Induction day where they canmeet their teachers and the other students, andproviding ‘get to know you activities’ once hereall help make them feel at home.Despite many girls being the only student fromtheir Primary school, it is not long before they feelsettled and comfortable.
“Our daughter has just finished her first year at TGGS and I wanted to write and say how pleased we are. It’s a shame that all children don’t have such a ”wonderful experience at school. -Year 7 Parent
“In lessons, students develop a range of independent learning skills exceptionally well, such as resilience, the ability to negotiate and problem solving. They demonstrate excellent concentration ”and are rarely off task. - Ofsted
Of course qualifications are important asthey open doors, and as a result inevitablymuch of what we do is focussed on externalexaminations. Our subject staff are excellentteachers, so that if the girls work hard theywill do very well. However, we are passionate aboutproviding a broad education and hopeour girls will leave us as rounded individualswith a thirst for knowledge and a passion forlife-long learning. We do this by teachinglearning skills like concentration, resilienceand the ability to manage emotions, aswell as by providing vibrant extra-curricularactivities.
“Thank you for daring me to be wise. Thank you for believing in me, when at times I doubted myself. Most of all, thank you for giving me the ”confidence to learn! - Former TGGS Student
We have nurtured thousands of girls throughthe trials and tribulations of teenage life, both by caring for them and by getting themto care for each other. Our experiencedpastoral team are skilled at dealing with thecommon and the less common problemsthat arise and are always on hand to help.We help our girls to:• develop grit, to continue with things that actively make them want to give up;• cope with failure, as they can bruise easily;• ignore the things they cannot control;• benefit from regular laughter. We want them to be well adjusted, comfortable with who they are and to havethe mental toughness to be successful.
We actively encourage our girls to expressthemselves through the creative arts. Theyjoin our drama clubs or take part in our wholeschool productions. Musically there is a hugechoice of ensembles such as Senior Orchestra,Harmony Choir and a Marching band as wellas a range of outlets from the Y7 Concert tothe carol service, and from monthly live micsessions to major regional festivals. If you are artistic then you can create yourmasterpiece in our lively Art Departmentwhose walls and halls are testament to ourgirls’ talent. “Thank you on be – her experience short of inspiration chosen a better sc
half of my daughterat TGGS has been nothingal. We couldn’t have”chool for her. - TGGS Parent
“The outstanding curriculum provides memorable experiences, and rich opportunities for students to develop a wide range of ”personal and learning skills. - Ofsted There is simply not enough time to do all of our extra-curricular activities: the clubs, the societies, the trips, the teams; the competitions, the house events, the clinics, the lectures; the social activities, the quizzes, the concerts, the charitable activities; the assemblies, the plays, the dancing, the singing; the photography, the cooking, the selling, the voting; the school council, the tournaments, the festivals, the fairs; the picnics, the debating, the tours, the conferences; the Parrlauf, the vegetable growing, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Ten Tors; the enrichment, the volunteering, the elections, the auction; the challenge days, the games and the fun…your problem will be trying to fit it all in.
“Team sports are important because you are supported by the people around you; you ”have a chance to help and to be helped - Year 7 Student We love sport and we’re very good at it. With our competition standard astropitch, new sports hall, pitches and courts, we have the facilities to nurture sporting endeavour. We encourage all the traditional games (where our teams are regularly regional champions) as well as many elite individual athletes across the full range of sports including athletics, swimming, gymnastics and Tae Kwon Do. For the less serious there are lots of opportunities to have fun and make friends through activities such as bowls, mountain biking, horse-riding, archery, trampoline, yoga, self- defence, dance, fitness, Pilates and Zumba.
We want our girls to be the leaders of tomorrow, whether that’s leading a multi-national company, managing a Healthcare trust or directing the village drama production. There are many leadership opportunities available to them such as becoming KS3 leaders or Prefects, joining the Head Girl team and taking part in Ten Tors. Girls have received advice from successful business women, practised networking with high powered executives and debated leadership styles at breakfast meetings. A particular hardy bunch have survived the ‘bottom field assault course’ at the Royal Marines Training Centre at Lympstone.“The extent to which students support each other and encourage each other to behave well is impressive. Extensive opportunities to contribute to the school, local and international communities are seized eagerly. When given the opportunity, they ”lead their own learning. -Ofsted
“Teachers are always willing to give extra support and really want you to achieve your potential - their commitment and passion for ”their subject is obvious. - Sixth Form Student After Year 11 our girls move into our outstanding Sixth Form and from there go on to take up places in the top universities across Britain, Europe and America, or find employment with top companies. Our students value above all the fantastically friendly and supportive atmosphere of our Sixth Form. Numerous trips to places such as New York, France, Germany, Poland, Kenya and London really help to bond the students, and create a sense of fun that withstands the stressful time of examinations. Full details of our inspiring Sixth Form (one of the highest performing in the country) can be found in our Sixth Form Prospectus which can be viewed on our website or is available on request.
