KSB Spotlight - March 2023 02 To have a united team take on challenges together is the core of any successful organization. The exhilara- tion that you feel when a group comes together with the sole objective of sur- mounting challenges and executes it with joy, is hard to describe.
KSB Spotlight - March 2023 03 Wellbeing or Being Well? Mental health at work and its effects on employee in organizations. gathered by: Mr. Mazdak Aliabadi As studied by WHO, almost 60% of the world’s population is at work (World employment and social outlook report – August 2022). All workers have the right to a safe and healthy envi- ronment at work. Decent work supports good mental health by providing: • a livelihood • a sense of confidence, purpose, and achievement • an opportunity for positive relationships and inclusion in a community • a platform for structured routines, among many other benefits. Safe and healthy working environments are not only a fundamental right but are also more likely to minimize tension and conflicts at work and improve staff retention, work perfor- mance, and productivity. Conversely, a lack of effective structures and support at work can affect a person’s ability to enjoy their work and do their job well; it can undermine people’s attendance at work and even stop people from getting a job in the first place. At work, risks to mental health also called psychological risk, may be related to job con- tent or work schedule, specific characteristics of the workplace or opportunities for career development among other things. Economic recessions or humanitarian and public health emergencies elicit risks such as job loss, financial instability, reduced employment opportu- nities or increased unemployment. Work can be a setting that amplifies wider issues that negatively affect mental health, in- cluding discrimination and inequality based on factors such as race, sex gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, social origin, migrant status, religion or age.
KSB Spotlight - March 2023 04 In recent years the measurement of Employees Engagement has become utmost crucial as checking on the targets, KPIs and achievements. As studied and categorized by Eric Mosley, CEO, and Der- ek Irvine, SVP, of Workhuman (an Irish company providing hu- man capital management software solutions) earlier in 2022, the four main elements of employee en- gagement that say should not be overlooked by organizations are: Although the conducted studies and data gives us a snapshot of the challenges and risks that are faced in the workplace, since more people are recently experiencing stress, burnout, and physical ex- haustion, employers need more than just numbers. They require authentic leadership and empathetic culture that supports human connections and well-being in the workplace. We each have individualized personalities, concerns, and val- ues as to what is most meaningful or important for us to thrive. While some employees may leave an organization to get away from a bad manager or dis- respectful colleagues, others leave because they are looking for something they are missing. Whether it is flexibility, autonomy, organizational support, community, or belonging - emo- tional and relational connections have more power to raise employee engagement than salary alone. Earlier this year, Gallup reported that fewer than one in four U.S. employees feel strongly that their organization cares about their well-being -- the lowest percentage in nearly a decade. They determined that employees who lack a sense of belonging are up to 12 times as likely to be disengaged and eventually fade away from the company. Moving forward, the challenges for humanizing the workplace are among the most important and determining factors that leaders and employers struggle to develop. Employers, in consultation with key stakeholders, can help improve mental health at work by creating an enabling environment for change. Action to address mental health at work should be done with the meaningful involvement of employees and their representatives and persons with lived experience of mental health conditions.
