Focus on Student Research Name: Milly Seeley Program/Year: COM, Class of 2025 Hometown: Portland, Oregon How are you involved in research at UNE? I am the President of the New England Research Club, which helps to promote research opportunities both at and outside of UNE for students. Most of the research I’ve participated in was done prior to coming to UNE in Oncology at the Oregon Health & Science University. However, I am currently involved a study that compares the differences in using ultrasound guidance versus anatomical landmarks for needle placement during electromyography procedures. I’m interested in Ophthalmology as a specialty, so I am also getting ready to start research involving Dry Eye Disease. What inspires you? I am truly inspired by the abundance of knowledge there is to learn. I feel the ability to solve a problem or gain some new piece of information is a gift, and the fields of medicine and research provide that every day for me. I have a lot of curiosity and ask, “why,” maybe too much at times! Research is a way to do just that before delving into the unknown to find the answer.
As a future physician, why is research important to you? I think part of being the best physician I can be for my patients comes from being open-minded towards new discoveries and advances in technology – both of which stem from research. Research drives the evolution of medicine, which takes place every day. Take Ophthalmology for example. The first laser for LASIK was only recently by the FDA in 1998. That’s not that long ago! It shows that there is so much room for medicine to grow and research is one of the primary contributors. Why did you decide to lead the COM student research club? Finding ways to get involved in research can be overwhelming, and I wanted to help other students find that are of interest to them. I stand behind our club’s goal to promote research for students and provide an environment where people can feel comfortable asking for help with finding a mentor, writing a paper, creating a CV, etc. How can others get involved in the club? Email me! [email protected]. I will put you on our email list so you can stay in the loop about events and opportunities that pop up. Our club would love to have you! What question do you wish I had asked you and how would you have answered? I wish you had asked me how I am able to balance doing research, being President of the Research Club, and surviving medical school. I would answer by shouting out the other amazing officers that make up our eboard – Jacqueline Klepinger, Muskaan Chhibber, and Michael Alen. They are the backbones of this club, and I wouldn’t be able to do it all without them!

(L-R) Radwa Ibrahim, Deborah Barlow, Karen Houseknecht, Dr. Meghan May Houseknecht and May laboratories publish new data identifying mechanisms linking antipsychotic medication side effects on iron metabolism and metabolic liver disease Metabolic liver disease, also known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a growing global health problem that is most often linked to obesity and diabetes. NAFLD is progressive and the more serious form (NASH) is a leading cause of liver transplantation world-wide, and its incidence is rapidly growing worldwide. NAFLD/NASH is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease and chronic kidney disease. Atypical antipsychotic medications (AA) are widely prescribed for the treatment of several psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and treatment-resistant depression. Antipsychotic drugs cause myriad metabolic and endocrine side effects, including systemic inflammation, weight gain, dyslipidemia and insulin resistance, all of which are associated with increased incidence of NAFLD. NAFLD is highly prevalent in patients with mental illness, and AA have been shown to increase incidence of NAFLD pre-clinically and clinically. However, the underlying mechanisms are not well understood.
UNECOM researchers, Dr. Meghan May, Dr. Karen Houseknecht, Deborah Barlow, BS and student doctor Radwa Ibrahim (COM ’23) teamed up to evaluate drug- associated mechanisms using a multi-omic approach, whereby they profiled expression of proteins in livers from animals treated with clinically relevant doses of antipsychotic medications and compared these findings to clinical samples from patients treated with AA medications. The published study reports novel findings that AA medications olanzapine, risperidone and aripiprazole caused changes in proteins and regulatory pathways involved in the development of NAFLD/NASH, as well as pathways regulating iron accumulation, systemic inflammation and dyslipidemia. The manuscript, entitled: Mechanisms Underlying Antipsychotic-Induced NAFLD and Iron Dysregulation: A Multi-Omic Approach was published in Biomedicines 2022, 10(6), 1225
