ICNOTMHMEUNITY PUTTING PEOPLE FIRST

02 LORD MAYOR’S BALL John E Wright & Co Ltd has sponsored the Lord Mayor’s Charity Ball held in May each year at the end of their term to raise funds for the Lord Mayor of Nottingham’s chosen charities. At the event, Councillor Morris chose a 1920’s theme to commemorate 70 years of the New Council House. The graphics, including an 8 meter pop-up stand, transported the 150 strong invitation list back 90 years The Lord Mayor distributing the funds raised from the Charity Ball to the opening of the New Council House in 1927 by Edward, Prince of Wales (soon to become Edward VIII). Other graphics included roll-up banners, seating plans, promotional material for other sponsors and of course the invitations, menus and seating name tags. The event raised over £14,000 for the local Deaf Society and the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. Keith James (centre left, back row) has worked at John E Wright for over 30 years and has just retired. Keith is pictured with his 1st/2nd West Bridgford Scouts planting a community garden at a local warden aided housing complex. We all wish him a long and happy retirement and wish everyone in his scout group all the best for their future.

IMAGINATION LIBRARY 03 Leni Goldblum of the Rotary Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a Club of Nottingham with book-gifting scheme that was launched some of the children who have by Dolly Parton in 1995. The charity helps benefited from the scheme ignite a love of reading in children by over the past 5 years delivering a free book to their home every month from birth until the age of five. This special charity as been giving books to children in parts of Nottingham for five years, and now over 5,000 children have been registered and almost 100,000 books have been delivered. John E Wright can take little credit for this amazing movement other than to keep sponsoring events that raise thousands of pounds to help fund it. Reading standards in Nottingham in the under 8’s was amongst the lowest in the country 10 years ago. Now through schemes such as this, the trend has been reversed and Nottingham is gradually climbing the literacy table which, given the City’s heritage as a UNESCO City of Literature (D H Lawrence et al), is just as well! NOTTINGHAM HOSPICE Some of you may recognise Sean, one of our Sean helping Rotarian John engineers. He and some of our other John E Robinson distribute the Wright employees spend a day each year Nottinghamshire Hospice distributing the fund-raising materials and then fund raising collateral another gathering them all up and returning them to the Nottinghamshire Hospice. Thousands are raised in this way for a cause which we are sure you will agree is totally worthy. The Rotary Club of Nottingham President said: “Whilst we liaise with Nottinghamshire Hospice on the timing and logistics, it is John E Wright’s fleet of vans and their drivers that make it all happen so smoothly and effectively. We are very grateful for their continued support and it means that all funds raised go directly to Nottinghamshire Hospice without any marketing or distribution costs”.

04 SANTA’S GROTTO John E Wright has developed a “pop-up” Santa’s Santa getting ready for Grotto which can be installed in any large room or the Bilborough Street gym and is used to bring some much needed Party Christmas cheer to those areas of our community where children are not so lucky. It has a warm log fire feel inside and together with the 8 metre snowy forest banners, has a very cold feel outside. Santa arrives and leaves in the Rotary Sleigh to great local amusement and then spends an exhausting two hours inside the grotto. Young children love it and together with Rotary Club of Nottingham, the company adds a touch of Christmas magic in some less affluent areas of Nottingham. The Grotto and Santa make regular visits to the Bilborough Christmas Street Festival where it can be found at the local library. The event also raises some money which goes back to support youth sports activities in those local areas, good old fashioned youth clubs and football teams. RLAEULGINSENONINND:G Some of you will know Alison (who, by the way, started with us from the age of 16!) is a keen runner and has been a member of the Smalley Road Runners club based near Heanor in Derbyshire for a number of years. She has boundless energy and is great at her job. In her spare time she runs... and runs, completing some amazing endurance events, most recently the 6 hour Halloween Hell on the Humber. She is a regular on the Great North Run and her next challenge is the Hardmoors 55 mile run across the North Yorkshire Moors. Along with the other club members, she raises money for charity most notably Red January every year which helps to fund MIND (Mental Health), and supporting a number of other events throughout the year raising thousands of pounds for local community projects.

06 NLAIOMNTBCTUSSLAAANNIDRCE It is not a necessarily well known fact that the MD Tony Barnett making a donation of Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance Service cash and banner graphics to Heather is a totally private funded charity. No public funds are Rabett, Community Fundraiser provided at all despite the amazing record of these dedicated people. They have carried out over 20,000 life saving missions over the past 25 years. Each mission costs £2,500 and call outs are received from a wide variety of incidents such as traffic accidents, sudden medical conditions (eg heart attacks), agricultural incidents, sporting accidents and falls. The first hour is vital, especially for head injuries, and so the team need upwards of £4 million per year to sustain their excellent work. Indeed the service was called upon in 2010 to help John E Wright ex-Chairman John Barnett (Tony’s father) when he met with an accident with a van whilst out walking on Sunday. The Air Ambulance was there in minutes to help. So, Tony was delighted to have the opportunity to invite Heather to raise awareness of the worthy cause at a Rotary dinner held at the Crowne Plaza in Nottingham in November 2019. As well as a donation from Rotary funds John E Wright doubled that gift and also provided some new roller banner graphics to help Heather in ongoing fund-raising work. Heather messaged the following day “Just dropping you a quick line to say thank you once again for inviting me to speak at your Rotary Club yesterday, for the preceding meal, and for your kind donations. It was really nice to take part in a full evening with the club. I would also like to say thank you for the roller banners which the team think look amazing! We really appreciate this kind gesture”. HHOAYUWSEOOD Toni Barnett volunteers at Haywood House, based at Nottingham’s City Hospital every Wednesday. With the other volunteers, and the excellent compassionate Haywood House staff, she helps to bring some fun to lives that are drawing to their close.
