ITNRDEEERPBLYASNHTIIRNEG 03 Planting for our future generation As part of our carbon offset policy, John E Wright works with both Premier Paper and the Woodland Trust on a variety of projects. One of the most popular is tree planting and we never have any trouble finding volunteers to spend a day (paid for by the company) in the open air digging and planting for a more hopeful future. One such project was the redevelopment of an Open Cast mining site near Heanor, Derbyshire. The area has an incredible history with links to DH Lawrence, is mentioned in the Domesday Book at the time of the Norman Conquest and dates further back to the Vikings. It is the intention of the Woodland Trust to plant over 250,000 trees to create a New Forest which they are calling the Young People’s Forest in acknowledgement of the effort young people are making to create this forest. In the coming years, as well as the new forest, the site will also feature rich grasslands, wild meadows and a number of beautiful ponds to encourage wildlife. The site is home to a variety of birds including short-eared owls, curlews and skylarks as well as hares, badgers, deer and a variety of rare butterflies and bees. A similar project started 5 years ago in Nottingham at the site of the old Gedling Colliery has transformed a wasteland into a new park, especially popular for dog walkers. The trees planted there are now starting to mature and it is wonderful to see the fruits of all our labours working to improve our environment and support wildlife in our cities. 04 CLOHRADRIMTYAYBOARL’LS John E Wright & Co Ltd has sponsored the Lord Mayor’s Charity Ball held in May each year at the end of their term to raise funds for the Lord Mayor of Nottingham’s chosen charities. At the event, Councillor Morris chose a 1920’s theme to commemorate 70 years of the New Council House. The graphics, including an 8 meter pop-up stand, transported the 150 strong invitation list back 90 years to the opening of the New Council House in 1927 by Edward, Prince of Wales (soon to become Edward VIII). Other graphics included roll-up The Lord Mayor distributing the funds raised from the Charity Ball banners, seating plans, promotional material for other sponsors and of course the invitations, menus and seating name tags. This special charity has been giving books to children in parts of Nottingham for five years, and now over 5,000 children have been registered and almost 100,000 books have been delivered. John E Wright can take little credit for this amazing movement other than to keep sponsoring events that raise thousands of pounds to help fund it. Reading standards in Nottingham in the under 8’s was amongst the lowest in the county 10 years ago. Now through schemes such as this, the trend has been reversed and Nottingham is gradually climbing the literacy table which, given the City’s heritage as a UNESCO City of Literature (D H Lawrence et al), is just as well! The Rotary Club of Nottingham President said: “Whilst we liaise with Nottinghamshire Hospice on the timing and logistics it is John E Wright’s fleet of vans and their drivers that make it all happen so smoothly and effectively. We are very grateful for their continued support and it means that all funds raised go directly to Nottinghamshire Hospice without any marketing or distribution costs”.
06 SANTA’S GROTTO John E Wright has developed a “pop-up” Santa’s Santa getting ready Grotto which can be installed in any large room or for the Bilborough gym and is used to bring some much needed Street Party Christmas cheer to those areas of our community where children are not so lucky. 08 LANIMONTBCTUSSLAAANNIDRCE It is not a necessarily well known fact that the MD Tony Barnett making a Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance donation of cash and banner Service is a totally private funded charity. No public graphics to Heather Rabett, funds are provided at all despite the amazing record of Community Fundraiser these dedicated people. They have carried out over 20,000 life saving missions over the past 25 years. Each mission costs £2,500 and call outs are received from a wide variety of incidents such as traffic accidents, sudden medical conditions (eg heart attacks), agricultural incidents, sporting accidents and falls. The first hour is vital, especially for head injuries, and so the team need upwards of £4 million per year to sustain their excellent work. Indeed the service was called upon in 2010 to help John E Wright ex-Chairman John Barnett (Tony’s father) when he met with an accident with a van whilst out walking on Sunday. The Air Ambulance was there in minutes to help. So, Tony was delighted to have the opportunity to invite Heather to raise awareness of the worthy cause at a Rotary dinner held at the Crowne Plaza in Nottingham in November 2019. As well as a donation from Rotary funds John E Wright doubled that gift and also provided some new roller banner graphics to help Heather in ongoing fund-raising work. Heather messaged the following day: “Just dropping you a quick line to say thank you once again for inviting me to speak at your Rotary Club yesterday, for the preceding meal, and for your kind donations. It was really nice to take part in a full evening with the club. I would also like to say thank you for the roller banners which the team think look amazing! We really appreciate this kind gesture”. With the other volunteers, and the excellent compassionate Haywood House staff, she helps to bring some fun to lives that are drawing to their close. 10 YOUTH FOOTBALL Originally founded in 1890 by a group of friends, the Thurmaston Magpies Football Club retains the founding principals that football should be played for fun and cement friendships. The young players learn team skills, sporting manners so often lacking in the modern game and, most of all, have fun. Their coach Danny Wright who is a former fitter for John E Wright says “the kids love it and its a great way for them to run off all that youthful energy”. The weekends are spent taking them out and watching them improve their skills and to generally enjoy themselves. He adds “this club is all about having fun” John E Wright is proud to offer support with some new kit for the team once a year.
