Different Sports Injuries And How to Manage Them Raico Odysseus L. Taan 11-CSS

Playing Carelessly Can Harm You Most sports require vigorous physical activities. This means physical injuries can happen if you are not careful enough. There are two types of physical injuries: ・ Acute Injury- injury that was acquired at the moment of the accident. ・ Chronic Injury - injury that was acquired through long-term misuse and overuse of the body in doing physical activities.

Common Acute Injuries

Sprain Sprain, not to be mistaken with strain, happens when the connective tissues that attach the bones together called ligaments are stretched or torn due to too much stress applied. Visible skin discoloration on the feet because of a sprain.

Strain Strain on the other hand, happens on muscle fibers. When too much tension is applied, the muscle strings can be torn and ruptured. A diagram showing damaged muscle tissues of the left trapezius muscle.

Fracture Fractures occur when bones can't handle the amount of force that was exerted on them. There are different types of fractures and although they can heal on their own, some needs surgical intervention to properly recover. A diagram that shows the different ways a bone can break.

Dislocation Dislocation happens when a joint slides out of its socket. Joint dislocations are very painful but once popped back to their original positions, they heal quite easily. X-ray scan of a dislocated knee with the femur sliding out of the tibial plateau.

Concussion Concussions occur in the head when the skull is shook too hard causing the delicate brain to knock on the skull. This can lead to temporary brain function disturbances and can be deadly when not given immediate medical attention. A diagram that shows how concussions happen.

Common Chronic Injuries

Stress Fracture This kind of fracture is acquired overtime on the bones that carries the body's weight, usually the lower extremities like on the tarsal bones. It is common among running athletes. Image of a stress fracture on the fifth metatarsal bone.

Tendinitis Also known as tendinopathy and tendonitis, is the inflammation or irritation of the connective tissues called tendons that attach muscles to bones. Causes are not known but the most likely culprit is overusage. It is common around the joints of the body. Diagram showing an elbow tendonitis.

Osteoarthritis Among different types of arthritis, osteoarthritis is the most common. This happens when the cartilage coating the articulation surface of bones around joints wear out - most likely because of aging. Comparison of a healthy knee joint and a knee joint suffering from osteoarthritis.

Bursitis Bursitis happens when the protective sacs around joints called bursae become irritated and inflamed due to repetitive stressful motions. It is common among baseball pitchers. A diagram showing an elbow bursitis.

Some Heat- related Illnesses ・H e at C ra m p s - Muscle cramps that are induced by overheating. ・H e at E x h a u st io n - Fatigue caused by extreme sweating without replenish. Effect of overheating and dehydration. ・H e a t St r o ke - This happens when the body's temperature overwhelms the heat-regulating system causing shock. This requires immediate medical attention.

Rember, you can prevent sports injuries by… ・Playing the sports that your body can take only. ・Doing a proper warm-up session before playing. ・Playing fairly and abiding by the rules of the game. ・Wearing proper protective equipments. ・Having adequate rest after each game.

Incase of sudden injuries, do the PRICER method. P Protect your injury from further rotect damage. Use supports when moving. R est Rest the affected area for the first two to three days. Ice Reduce the swelling and bruising by applying ice using an ice pack or a towel for 15-20 mins every 2-3 hrs. CompressCompress the injury using a bandage to reduce swelling but don't leave it on when you sleep. Elevate Elevate your injury above the level of your heart using supports. R efer Refer to medical professionals for further recovery assistance.

Amidst injury, avoid HARM! H Heat causes blood vessels to dilate eat causing increased blood flow to the injury making it swell more. A Alcohol also acts as a blood vessel lcohol dilator and it makes the swelling worse. R Running and any other vigorous unning activities increases heartbeat which results in an increased blood flow. M Massaging induces blood flow to assage the affected area as well. Avoid massaging it for the first few days to avoid delaying the recovery process.
