The Instructional Coaches are fully funded by Title 1. Their job title was changed this year from Instructional Teacher Advisors to Instructional Coaches to better reflect the job responsibilities. We continue to follow the instructional coaching model from Paul Bambrick-Santoyo's Get Better Faster. Goal...to build capacity within the Instructional Coaches, thus empowering them to continue to build capacity in their teachers. Ways Instructional Coaches support teachers during Remote Learning: ● Join in on Planning Sessions ● Ask to join Classes ● Be a Guest Reader ● Help Field Questions and Support Assignments ● Help struggling students and parents ● Conference with students 29
Title 1 Team Leaders Program Specialists for Title 1 Implementation Amanda Brandi Valarie Yadira Cameron, Garza Buhidar Moreno Director for Title 1 /SCE We believe that TOGETHER, we WILL accomplish more. Instructional Coaches . . . This position allows me to look at a classroom through multiple facets. Sometimes I observe a teacher as an administrator, student, parent, or community member. The first thing I have learned is that we must listen to teachers concerns and ideas, they are the experts and know the specific needs of their students. Sometimes teachers need an advocate, sounding board, cheerleader or simply need validation. If I can take something off a teacher's plate when things become too stressful, provide assurance or a \"pick me up\" with a cup of hot coffee or piece of chocolate then I feel like I have restored a teacher. When we are learning something that is foreign and totally brand new, the key to success for some is small chunks - not everyone acquires new knowledge at the same pace and that is ok. I have witnessed educators start slow and catch-up quickly once the new tool is implemented, it is awesome when the training wheels fly off and see colleagues soar. Learning and Supporting “The Title 1 Team is very excited about working with such an amazing group of educational leaders. Together, we will help each and every campus reach new heights. It is going to be a GREAT YEAR of SUCCESS for CCISD!” Goal...to build a strong and cohesive TEAM of Instructional Coaches within CCISD. Online learning has exposed educator digital weaknesses leading to urgent, real-time teacher professional learning from roving and designated campus professional staff. The trickle down professional learning needs I experienced as an instructional coach were met through consistent professional learning and real time assistance by our instructional technology specialist, Roxanna Guerrero. The Office of Instructional Technology partnered with Communities in Schools of the Coastal Bend to help them continue their goal to continue to “develop transformative relationships to unlock a student's potential.” Due to Covid-19 the CIS student support personnel could not reach out to students, but now they can through Canvas. Christa Creek, Director of Programs, worked with the IT team to discuss the needs of her team and the need to connect with students. Once the plan was created all CIS personnel were trained in Canvas and given a custom course to build in. All CIS were shown how to invite students to their course. -Cary K. Perales, Director of Instructional Technology 37
Christa Creek, Program Director MISSION: Communities In Schools' mission is to surround students with a community of support empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. Communities In Schools has always been well equipped to serve the students, families and schools of CCISD. Initially, the threat of the pandemic presented a problem for our agency with regards to presenting and providing information and resources to our families we serve but due to the support of the Office of Instructional Technology, the learning curve for technological innovation was minimal. One of the obstacles we faced was familiarity with all of the technology resources provided by the district. As an agency, we were not 38
sure where to begin or how to provide a starting point for our campus Site Coordinators to be successful in utilizing the technology available to them. After contacting Cary Perales about creating steps to help our staff, everything started to fall into place. She shared with us what ‘Tech2Teach’ could provide for our staff as well as several trainings that was more than informational to say the least. There were so many trainings to choose from, in which many of us had a hard time trying to decide on what to sign up for. Once all of our staff was set up in Canvas the Technology Department was also gracious enough to train our staff on how to use it. They not only built our Canvas tiles, but showed our staff step by step what to do. We at CIS sincerely appreciate the time, effort, and patience the Office of Instructional Technology shared with us in making sure our staff were ready to start a new chapter in 39serving the students and families of CCISD.
“Due to COVID-19, virtual learning through Canvas is vital to our student’s success. The CCISD provided training helped in the understanding of the program and its enormous potential use for Communities in Schools’ staff. Learning how to upload websites, videos, and how to create our own course was explained with patience and detailed direction. Though I have not yet fully explored Canvas I know I have been given the tools to be able to utilize the application to benefit our students and their families.” – Michael Granato, CIS Site Coordinator at Moody High School “I am forever grateful for the Canvas training. I have been able to reach all of my CIS/CYD students and provide them with the help they needed to stay on track and continue learning. I was able to do my college and career week activities through canvas and it was a great success. Thank you very much CCISD Instructional Technology for providing us with a quality and informative training.” -Debra Blanco, CIS Site Coordinator at Cunningham at South Park Middle School 40
