U of Southern California Doctor of Physical Therapy Program: Hello, I am Jermiah Tate. I recently changed my major to Art in order to cultivate my talent for Art while exploring my deep passion for communicating through visual expression. Although my ultimate career goal requires me to take numerous science courses, art gives me the individuality and confidence I desire to feel daily while preparing for my career of physical, musical, and art therapy. My goal in relation to my love for art is to influence as many people to see life through an artistic perspective. Viewing life as art eliminates a closed mind. Understanding art can have various meanings allows one to open their mind and gain a sense of diverse individuality among themselves and others. Growing up I was not always confident in sketching or painting without tracing the image first, but as you navigate through my portfolio you will capture the beauty in my gain of confidence to create art from scratch. I am excited for my journey as I continue to learn how to enhance my skills and diversify my style. After graduating, Jana is applying to Teach for America, with plans to land a teaching position in Austin, Texas. A NEW MAJOR and MINOR... PERFORMANCE STUDIES The Performance Studies major views performance as an object to be studied, a creative method of research, and a tool for community engagement. Working in an interdisciplinary context, students use a performance-based lens for experiential learning and research that includes sharing creative work with public audiences. The program promotes inclusion, community advocacy and outreach to diverse audiences. Performance Studies majors devise a career plan that connects their interdisciplinary skills to successful employment or entry into an arts or humanities-based graduate program. Select course offerings also prepare students for advanced study in social science-based graduate programs such as Anthropology or Communication Studies. Graduates will be prepared to enter a variety of careers that require skills such as critical and creative thinking, oral and written communication, interdisciplinary collaboration, intercultural competence, project design and management, and video, sound, light, and stage design, among others. Because the program is committed to community engagement through arts-based education initiatives, advocacy in partnership with local non-profits, and communicating the value of its performance research to public audiences, students will also have community and professional networking opportunities. The Gestalt Special Topic: The Art of Resilience Page 9 $100,000 ART CONTEST ANNOUNCES WINNERS The Engage Art Contest announces its winning artists for their 2019-2020 contest. The contest, open to artists in North America, fea- tured four categories—Visual Art, Music Video, Film and Performing Arts—and drew more than 1,000 submissions from 24 countries. Each category was juried blind by a panel of experts in that field of the arts. Cash prizes total $100,000. The Engage Art Contest is the creation of art appreciators and philanthropists, Bill and Linda Bantz of North Carolina. Bill felt a strong calling from God to re-introduce artists to a time-tested source of inspiration —the Holy Scriptures. For centuries, artists such as Bach, Mozart, Chagall, Dali and Matisse have been inspired to create works based on Scripture. Bill and Linda feel that now is the time for this generation to draw on this source and contribute a contemporary take. The topic of this contest is the Spiritual Battle as described in Ephesians 6:10-20, with each artist asked to explore this spiritual dynamic from their own viewpoint. In truth, the theme is universally relevant and evergreen, and it provides fodder for a broad array of artistic response. The 2020 Engage Art Winners are: Visual Art 1st Place: Steve A. The words that I put together is the story of my life and the art that I put to paper or canvas tells a story through pictures when I can’t describe my pain in words. My art is the light at the end of the tunnel that helped me to succeed and pick myself up whenever I fell down and I hope it can do the same for others. The Gestalt Special Topic: The Art of Resilience Page 19 Artist Statement During my sophomore year as an art major, my creative focus has been influenced by both my current and past experiences as an artist. My portfolio reflects this process as well as the process of steps that directly and indirectly impacted the outcome of the included work. The purpose of the pieces I worked on earlier in the school year, including Savage Lily, Angel, and Step One, was to explore personal experiences and ideas through representational story telling. Each of these three pieces are a reflection of my artistic past, one where the creative process I carried out was shaped by a desire for perfection as well as the comfort and mindfulness I experienced during these detailed and tedious creative projects. While the technical skills I practiced here remain important to me, I have used the majority of my time in the studio this year exploring what there is to be learned an the concept of chance through drawing, painting, and writing. This resulted in pieces that include Good Morning, JUST LIKE THAT, and Yellow Dress in Focus, where I allowed my thoughts and environment to influence my drawing and writing. Through exploration of my new creative goal of “letting loose,” I was able to use the playfulness that guided me in that process to guide me in letting go of some of the rigidity I find in the process and out- come of my representational work. The perfectionism that pushes me to develop my artistic skills can also hinder my progress at times, and using improvisation to work through that problem in my artwork has helped develop my problem solving skills in and out of the studio. Spending time creating with less intention has led me to develop my understanding of the ways in which my expression is dependent on my time, place, mo- ment, environment, energy, and social atmosphere. This portfolio reflects my focus on what can be learned about our subconscious and the creative instinct through the impact those factors have on the outcome of each piece, making it impossible to create the same thing twice. The Gestalt Special Topic: The Art of Resilience Page 20 Artist Statement Art has been a part of my life for over 10 years. The importance to me and art has been something I like to express as my calling. For years, I have only made my art as a side project due to individuals in my past expressing to me that, “this cannot be a profession you plan to continue in because you can’t go far, or there is no money in it.” As the years progressed, I have imbedded this into my brain and lifestyle because I was afraid of judgement and missing that self-assurance that was needed in my life to push forward in my dreams of becoming an artist. After attending Xavier, I have realized that this is a passion that I have always misused or mistook as just a hobby. The work, effort, and diligence of the art department has evolved me into being more into y art and appreciating it for what it is. I think of my artwork as a way to express my reality of society and life. When trying to incorporate ideas from my everyday life and my personal way of thinking, it is not always the easiest task to complete. When creating art, my approach is to explore different relationships of site in context, different art, and key ideas in the community. My creative work includes drawing, paintings, and poetry. As an artist, I am essentially interested in creating works that is appealing to the eyes, and are fun. Exploring the emotional links between poetry and painting is like picking two different flowers from the same field from a bou- quet, beautifully pair, complementing one another and sent and aesthetics. The variety of poetry within each art piece can concrete emotional reactions through the discipline of rhythmic word structure, all the collages add to the primary intentions of the pieces, anesthetic formality of illusions built of color, and texture, and a symphony for the eye. With the literal and visual form of each pieces can shed a light on the ideas to unionize the aspects of each. During the development process of my art work I try to create work that is fun, energetic, and understandable. Most of these ideas are things that I see every day and interpret in my own aspect of learning what the concepts maybe. I try to have viewers understand my way of thinking through my mind, even though it is subjective to interpret what we are seeing. I try to get the viewer to understand the ideals, the work, and the thought process that was behind each art piece. More recently I’ve been working on a few pieces that are essentially devoted to being more fun and colorful in transitioning into more of a formal framework, it tries to explore the relationships between gender politics and emotional pieces. I inspire my art from more recent artists to name a few like: Brionya James Matthew, Vondell Bell, Annie Freud, and Rewa. My experience in working with a wide range of concepts, materials, techniques, and in working with a broad range of community it gives me the tools to translate this experience to variety possibilities. The Gestalt Special Topic: The Art of Resilience Page 21 Artist Statement During my Sophomore year my art has focused on studying emotions and the human form. I enjoy creating artwork surrounding these themes because it allows me to express feelings I otherwise don’t have the vocabulary to describe. Many of these pieces fit into a larger collection of work surrounding emotions, how they feel and are interpreted, and how the larger community defines them. These ideas are often presented in my work through the color scheme, the perceived and actual texture of the piece, as well as the objects within the piece. As an artist, when an audience sees my work I want them to be able to insert themselves into the world I have created and in turn discover what emotions it evokes from within them. I believe that the audiences interpretation of my works is as much a part of the piece as the actual act of me creating it. All in All, words are hard, art is fun, *insert a nice ending here*. The Gestalt Special Topic: The Art of Resilience Page 23 Artist Statement Artist Statement: Within each day, there is a moment to allow your mind to wander freely and engage in outrageous scenarios. And sometimes this leads to a thought which refuses to leave or be forgotten. An example is an idea which came from a fellow sixth grader in 2011. This idea included a fantasy, adventure story filled with magic, battles, and chaos. The core theme being \"change may not be good or bad, but simply is\". Overtime, the idea evolved from a mindless thought into a ongoing narrative. This work focuses on plot, character development, backgrounds, and basic storyboarding. Different medias allow for a vast range of emotions, dramatic, and story. Thus, the ability to form not only artworks, but someone's history, someone's emotions, someone's overall being, becomes freeing. The Gestalt Special Topic: The Art of Resilience Page 25 Artist Statement Photography has been an interest of mine ever since I took my first photography class as an elective my freshman year in high school. I was drawn to it because of all of the layers within the entire process. To me, photography isn’t just about taking a simple picture. It’s about learning the angles of your subjects, employing different exposures, and mastering the settings on each photo to capture the perfect image. My first photography course was traditional, using film cameras. I learned how to best use the settings on a analog camera, as well as how to develop film in a dark room. Working with analog cameras was an enjoyable lesson and great basis for tuning my photography skill set. Although at times it was difficult and time consuming, I loved coming to class and developing my photos. My sophomore year I took courses in digital photography, which is the medium that I now primarily use for my artwork. My first digital photo is one that I consider to be one of my best works (the waterfall on slide 13). This portfolio also contains a variety of other photos that I feel best express my photography style. Every now and then I capture scenery in nature because when I see a breathtaking view, I just have to capture it so it can last forever. My style typically lends itself to portraits the majority of the time, however, because I enjoy capturing the emotions on people faces. I stage my photos and create images to portray socially conscious messages. My opinions regarding different topics of conversation in society (stereotypes--for example, the photo on slide9) are what motivate me to create the images I stage and capture. My work is conceived by the thoughts that come to my mind whether I am given a topic or photographing things that mean something to me. The Gestalt Special Topic: The Art of Resilience Page 26 The “Erin Elizabeth Wright Art Scholarship” Congratulations Amaya Cooper! 2020—2021 Art Scholarship Award Recipient (Art Major, GPA of 3.84) Artist Statement Photography has always been an outlet for me to produce art that reflects the reality that I face every day. While much of my work includes a great number of illusive edits, the overall subject of the composition is based on genuine experiences as a member of today’s youth. The central idea, throughout much of my work, reflects the youth of the nation. My work’s intention is to showcase how distinct the culture among the youth of America is compared to previous generations. Through different editorial techniques, I capture the struggle of coming-of-age and the obstacles that come with coming into one’s own skin. My concentration emphasizes the importance of our youth and our vast influence over our future. Among my photographs, you will notice a theme of heavy layering and collaging. This element of my work serves to embody the action of constant change and movement, which encompasses the entire transition to adulthood. Color is also a key element that is present in all my photographs as well. To me, the incorporation of vivid and lively color serves as a symbol of how vibrant and energetic our generation is. My pieces illustrate the inner chaos of the young generation and how in turn that chaos is our beauty. The Gestalt Special Topic: The Art of Resilience Page 30 Artist Statement The classes that I have taken have allowed me to view art in a new light. I am more aware what is taking place when discussing a piece and I also appreciate the craft a lot more. The ideas for my art pieces do not come from inspirations from other artist but from what happens in my life. I do my best to explain some of the deeper aspects of my life through my artwork. The Gestalt Special Topic: The Art of Resilience Page 37 /// June 26 - June 27 VIRTUAL JOHN T. SCOTT ‘62 CELEBRATION ONLINE DEMONSTRATIONS, WORKSHOPS, PANELS AND MORE... Ogden Museum is proud to play a role in a special annual event celebrating the life of artist John T. Scott, happening this Friday, June 26 and Saturday, June 27! John T. Scott ‘62 died in September 2007, and his memorial took place at Xavier University. A community of artists, Xavier alumnae, friends, colleagues and people who Scott had influenced came together to celebrate his life. It was at that time that a group of these individuals decided the best way to honor John T. Scott was to gather each year on his birthday, June 30, to celebrate his life and expand on what he gave us through his art, his teaching and his humanity. The first gathering took place in 2008 and lasted for 24 hours. It has happened every year to this date in different forms but always sharing work and working together, remembering Scott said, “The way you spell art is W.O.R.K.” The different workshops and activities are always free and open to the public. This year, we are challenged with the current pandemic. In the spirit of improvisation and making the best out of the worst, we will again gather in the virtual space and celebrate. https://ogdenmuseum.org/event/virtual-john-t-scott-celebration/ The Spirit House\" “The Spirit House” by John T. My experiences with racial and gender prejudice and injustice have driven me to create a modern Social Injustice art series on racism and sexism. This series portrays current events and injustices while occasionally linking and comparing them to past events. Through these pieces, I hope to inspire my viewers to want change and to eradicate the ignorance that “racism is over” in others. Throughout my career as an artist, I wish to inspire my viewers, convey my emotions, and give them a new outlook on the world around them. Thank you all for a wonderful three years at Xavier University of Louisiana. I look forward to visiting campus after graduation, and I appreciate your time and sharing of your knowledge and expertise in the art field. The Gestalt Special Topic: The Art of Resilience Page 40 Prospect New Orleans Announces the Artist List for the 2020 Iteration of the International Contemporary Art Triennial, Prospect.5: \"Yesterday we said tomorrow\"... Congratulations Professor of Art Ron Bechet! WHAT IS PROSPECT? Prospect New Orleans is a citywide contemporary art triennial and the only exhibition of its kind in the US with a decade-long history. Every three years, we bring new art to an old city by inviting artists from all over the world to create projects in a wide variety of venues spread throughout New Orleans. Each iteration of Prospect is organized by a leading voice in the curatorial field. For residents and visitors alike, Prospect is an invitation to experience the city through the eyes of artists. https://www.prospectneworleans.org/ P.5: AN OVERVIEW Yesterday we said tomorrow, curated by Artistic Directors Naima J. Keith and Diana Nawi, is the fifth iteration of Prospect New Orleans. This citywide contemporary art triennial will feature more than fifty artists in over fifteen venues throughout New Orleans and will include newly commissioned works alongside the work of historically significant artists. P.5 will investigate how history informs the present––particularly in relation to New Orleans, a uniquely American city that embodies so many urgent issues of today, but which remains deeply invested in and subject to its recent and historical past. Taking the city as a mandate, this exhibition will examine history as both document and fiction, exploring the idea that our moment feels both unprecedented and familiar. The sixteen-hour virtual training will be held in four 4-hour sessions from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Janu- ary 7, 8, 14, and 15.* The training will be conducted by The Center for Restorative Approaches. The training will include: Restorative Approaches Defined Facilitating Community Building Circles Guiding Principles of Restorative Approaches Affective Communication-Six Skills of Empathetic Listening Preventing and Responding to Minor Conflicts Restoratively Restorative Conversations What are restorative approaches? Restorative approaches are processes used to build, strengthen, and repair relationships. The restorative approach is an interdisciplinary field inspired by the philosophy of restorative justice and guided by the understanding that rela- tionships are central to learning, growth, and a healthy community. Restorative approaches focus on methods that help people to cooperate, to take responsibility for their behavior, to resolve conflict, and to improve communication. Instead of focusing on blame and doing things “to” people, restorative approaches work “with” people to build prob- lem-solving skills that result in better connections and a healthier community. Please let us know of your interest via Google Form. Space is limited. *Please be mindful that you must commit to all four sessions to complete the training.
