Blockchain technology has its roots dating back to 1979, when a data structure known as the “Merkle Tree” was BCT patented by Ralph Merkle. The said idea was later 1979 developed in 1991, when Scott Stornetta and Stuart Heber came up with a method for connecting blocks of data through a shared recorder (known as a ledger). Hashes would then be recorded on printed material such as newspapers as “solid” proof of the validity of a document. However, practical use of blockchain technology reached its apex in 2008 through the efforts of a person (or group of people) under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto. Instead of creating a physical copy of the ledger, Nakamoto designed for it to be stored in a peer-to-peer system of networked devices. Transactions of data would be recorded digitally and kept in a decentralized network, allowing for information to be stored in multiple computers instead of one central server. One excellent analogy of this concept is the difference between a document file stored in Google Docs and one created in Microsoft Word, as stated by William Mougayar. As a result of its decentralization, information would be publicized to all computers in a shared network. This exposure would not only help promote transparency of documents but also prevent tampering from occurring, as the resulting hash will not match those present in other nodes (CPU hosts).
