Strengthening the Student Toolbox: Strategies to Support Student Learning Return to Top of the Document Aim: Supporting students to work independently can improve learning outcomes. Multiple reviews identify the value of strategies that help students work independently with success. Research indicates that explicit modelling of independent learning strategies and guided practice is necessary. For example, prompting students to reflect on their work or to consider the strategies they will use if they get stuck have been highlighted as valuable. This workshop examines the most effective strategies and approaches to help support students with their learning. Using videos to enhance learning with clickview/edpuzzle Return to Top of the Document Aim: Clickview is a highly valuable web-based resource providing videos and associated functionality for supporting learning. Promoting inclusive practice Return to Top of the Document Aim: Inclusion is about how we structure our college, our classrooms and our lessons so that all our students learn and participate together. An inclusive classroom is one that creates a supportive environment for all learners, including those with learning differences, and can also challenge and engage gifted and talented learners by building a more responsive learning environment. Inclusivity also means respecting people from all backgrounds and cultures, and by teaching our students the importance of this, we create a much more tolerant and understanding environment, not just in the classroom and school but also in wider society. Presentation Techniques for Teachers & Dual Coding Return to Top of the Document Aim: Dual coding is combining words and visuals such as pictures, diagrams, graphic organizers, and so on. The idea is to provide two different representations of the information, both visual and verbal, to help students understand the information better. Adding visuals to a verbal description can make the presented ideas more concrete, and provides two ways of understanding the presented ideas. Please note this is not a workshop about learning styles. Dual coding and learning styles sound similar, but are not quite the same thing. While dual coding has scientific evidence backing its use, learning styles have been repeatedly tested and shown not to improve learning. Understanding how human brains learn can help teachers to employ more effective teaching methods. OneDrive Return to Top of the Document Aim: This workshop will allow delegates to gain an understanding of effective use of Microsoft OneDrive, for personal work-related use and for use with students. OneDrive is Microsoft’s cloud storage product, similar to Google Drive or Dropbox. Every College student and member of staff automatically has an OneDrive account, with 1Tb of storage. Mandatory Training for All College Staff Return to Top of the Document All staff must complete the training every 3 years as per mandatory requirement Equality and Diversity http://ilearn.nwrc.ac.uk/course/view.php?id=530 This short online training session will give you a useful introduction to equality and diversity legislation and will help you to understand your personal areas of responsibility. It covers; developing an awareness of Section 75 obligations and the general equality agenda developed for all staff; allows staff to identify their attitudes and behaviour towards cultural differences. Safeguarding http://ilearn.nwrc.ac.uk/course/view.php?id=529 This training takes participants through the College’s Child Protection Policy. It also provides participants with the various definitions of abuse, the process involved if concerned that a student is a subject of child abuse and the staff member’s responsibility. SENDO http://ilearn.nwrc.ac.uk/course/view.php?id=1145 This training focuses on the staff member’s responsibility under the Special Educational Needs and Disability Order (SENDO) 2005. Health and Safety http://ilearn.nwrc.ac.uk/course/view.php?id=212 This training covers the College policy and objectives in relation to Health & Safety, and addresses the responsibility of staff to adhere to these guidelines. Training discusses general Health & Safety issues such as Manual Handling, DSE and COSHH GDPR http://ilearn.nwrc.ac.uk/course/view.php?id=909 As of 25th May 2018, the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) come into effect in the UK and across Europe. These Regulations represent a fundamental shift in the way organisations must treat personal data. As an employee of NWRC, we all have a duty to comply with the new GDPR legislation. Page | 43

Level 3 TAQA Assessor’s Award Return to Top of the Document Aim: All practising Assessors and Internal Verifiers must have the appropriate qualification to perform these roles, i.e. level 3 for assessors and Level 4 for Internal Verifiers. .
