Editorial Message Dear fellow veterinarians, The past year was an experience, the kind of experience that one may not want to experience again. It was complicated, perilous and we had setbacks. From the perspective of victories and losses, last year might end on the loser’s side. However, as someone wise once said, “Life should be seen as a sum of experience rather than the sum of victories and downfalls.” Going by that, last year had a lot to offer: lessons, insights, perspectives, epiphanies and discernments. Lessons from science, insights from scientists, perspectives from leaders, epiphanies about health care workers, discernments of right and wrong and so on. When we ponder and comprehend profoundly about these realizations from the pandemic-stricken year, there is one thing that stands towering above everything else: HOPE. Hope in humanity, of humanity, and for humanity in different forms, magnitude, and dimensions. Humans collectively elevating their intellectual processing capacity and emotional adaptive aptitude to survive, thrive and prosper in what looked like a grim year. When a strain of virus, that had its genesis in a city located in the farthest corner of the world from us, restricted our movement, we innovated, met and socialized over video conferencing platforms. When SARS-COV2 threatened to upend our lives and usurp our livelihoods, we as sapiens responded by getting a vaccine ready in record time to survive. The story of hope is so strong that when time throws another curve ball at us in the coming years, however tough the going gets, we know that we will keep going as a species. Magazines and literary works are known to be a stamp of their times. Let this third edition of global vet times be a testimony to the spirit and insuperable human ability to hope and survive in the toughest of times. The contributions to this edition of Global Vet Times are illustrations of the powerful and resilient human brains that can adapt to tough times and still be creative enough to break the shackles we are bound to and transcend the distances. In this edition, we have tried to include articles that reflect the optimism and stories of hope and creativity during times of uncertainty. I extend my sincere thanks to all the magazine committee members, especially Dr. Poonam Vinayamohan for the cover page design and Dr. Naveen Surendran for the mentoring. I would also like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Baiju Prabhakar for the design and digital work associated with the magazine. I would also like to thank all the members who took time from their busy schedules to create something together that all of us could go through and keep as a souvenir of the times we have been through. Let us also take this moment to remember the lives lost and thank science for the ones saved. Thanks Sambhu Murali Email : [email protected]
President's Message As we are still going through the strains of this pandemic COVID19, AKVNA has not let down on our activities. With a strong will and optimism, we moved forward with many activities both virtual and emails. We organized fundraisers; virtual webinars/seminars related to current topics. We learned to develop this new culture of keeping our families together online. The dynamics of our everyday life changed forever. In fact, it may have got us even closer than before. Never have we seen AKVNA so constructively active. Our younger generation of veterinarians got more involved, indicating a continually active growth. Our membership increased this year. Our Facebook presence as well as our website and other platforms are witness to this. I want to appreciate all their efforts to lead this group to a higher level. I want to wish all a highly active, successful, and safe 2021-22 season. Justin Fernandez President AKVNA Email: [email protected]
Secretary’s Message Dear Friends, The year 2020 was an exceptionally challenging year to proportions that we have never imagined or had experienced in at least two generations' time. The pain, loss, fear and the many inconveniences we all had to overcome or cope with still continues and will likely to continue until everyone gets vaccinated. But there is glimmer of hope as more and more vaccines are getting emergency approval and distribution issues are easing. On behalf of AKVNA, we sincerely thank the medical community, front line workers and scientists who fought to keep COVID-19 from spreading and discovered cures and vaccines to protect. We also sincerely hope that at least the latter part of 2021 could be saved and some sort of 'normalcy' in life can be achieved. At AKVNA we tried to engage our colleagues and keep our focus throughout these perplexing times. Although we had to cancel our 20th anniversary (2020) annual gathering scheduled in New Jersey, we quickly adapted to the new reality and conducted a very successful virtual general body meeting on August 15. In association with Indian Veterinary Association (IVA, Kerala), AKVNA conducted a virtual webinar where eminent AKVNA members took seminars on the topic 'COVID-19 and One Health'. For the first time we could provide continuing education credits to veterinarians who attended the webinar from American Association of Veterinary State Boards. With the help of senior practicing vets in North America, we initiated an ambitious program where aspiring Kerala veterinarians who wish to obtain veterinary licensure in North America can shadow doctors at select clinics to prepare for their CPE along with great resources available at AKVNA website (www.akvna.org). Special thanks to Dr. Roy Jacob who significantly improved www.akvna.org to an excellent website. AKVNA conducted 2 fund raisers to support alumni in Kerala who met with a serious accident and health emergencies and continue to raise our 'endowment fund' to help with such immediate needs. As we grow we are recognized by organizations such as Federation of Malayalee Association of Americas (FOMAA) who recently asked if we could arrange experts to talk about 'COVID-19 and its impact on pet welfare' to the greater Malayalee community in North America. And we know when our world turned upside down last year, people were increasingly looking for solace and joy by bonding with their companion animals and there was a huge uptick in pet adoptions throughout the world that kept (us) veterinarians busy. We are grateful that in the past year with the generous support and encouragement from our members we could engage our community meaningfully and deliver hope. And 'Hope' is the theme for this third edition of our eMagazine 'Global Vet Times'. AKVNA would like to thank you for all the support we received in the past year. Sincerely Naveen Surendran Secretary AKVNA 2018-21
..................................................................................... HUMOUR Dr. M. KRISHNAN NAIR I am using the British spelling - humour and not theAmerican –I hamumuosirng the British spelling - humour and not the American – humor Lady Nancy Astor was a member of British Parliament when Winston Churchill was the Prime Minister. She had absolute dislike for Churchill. Once she remarked \"If I were your wife I would put poison in your coffee\". Churchill immediately stood up and said \"My Lady, if you were my wife I would definitely drink that coffee\" That was repartee at its best dipped in humour. There are many types of humour - wit, jokes, satire, slapstick, irony and sarcasm. Humour may be as sharp as a surgical knife, deeply penetrating like a scythe or hard as with a sledge hammer. In English literature there are many books with humour and wit. Mark Twain, Charles Dickens and Jane Austin wrote books, not essentially humourous, but had a lot of humourous situations. Mark Twain's quotes are very famous. Bernard Shaw's humour was sometimes pungent and brutal. Another author I liked was Douglas Adams for the levity and light hearted situations. But the author I adore is P. G. Wodehouse. What a remarkable writer! The ever present Jeeves, the inimitable valet of Bertie Wooster, an English Gentleman, still ripples my mind with mirth and joy and evokes a smile. How can we complete the list without mentioning the books by the veterinarian author James Herriot (real name J. Alfred Wight) for his auto biographical books on the absurd, chaotic and hilarious situations during his practice in Yorkshire, England (all incidents there are not real but some contrived). The list is not complete. In Malayalam, humour started with Kunchan Nambiar in his Ottam Thullal. Later E.V Krishna Pillai in his novels and Sanjayan (M. R. Nair) in his literary compositions. VKN took humour to a new dimension in his writings and novels. There have been many humorous writers but the books by Innocent (cine actor) and (late) Babu Paul (IAS) are really enjoyable for the humour and sarcasm - though the books are not of a high literary genre (Since many years I am out of touch with the modern authors both in English and Malayalam - reading has become very limited). P 07
..................................................................................... There have been many journals mainly for humour and satire. I used to read PUNCH published from England and later came to know it stopped publication in 1990 or so. In India we had Sankhar's weekly - mainly for cartoons. In Malayalam when I was in Middle school or so I remember reading the magazine - RASIKAN and later NARADAN - mainly for jokes. I always enjoyed cartoon strips in newspapers. For me plum in the pudding was DENNIS THE MENACE, the enjoyable naughty little boy with his neighbor Mr. Wilson created by Hank Ketcham (attempts to recreate by others after his death were not successful). In India the political cartoon by Laxman was very popular and also Cheria Munshyanum and Valia Lokavum (Small man and the big world) by Aravinadan in the Mathrubhumi weekly last page, was social criticism at its best. Bobanum Molyum in Manorama weekly had good humour. ******************************************************************** Who can forget the Sardarji jokes in India? -Sardarji said to his gardener-why don't you water the plants? Gardner-It is raining heavily Sardarji- Why don't you take an Umbrella? Another time-Sardarji's suitcase was stolen -Sardarji to his wife-Don’t worry-the key is with me ********************************************************************* Lyndon Johnson once said \"I have given orders that in national emergencies I may be awakened any time even if I am in a cabinet meeting\" I started with Winston Churchill and will end with him. Churchill was a connoisseur of whiskey, always imbibing it in full. Once in the parliament lobby a lady MP told him - \"Mr Churchill - you are drunk, disgustingly drunk\" Churchill replied- Yes, I am disgustingly drunk and I see you disgustingly ugly and tomorrow morning I will be sober and you will still be disgustingly ugly. Churchill's quotes were very famous: -- \"A modest man who has much to be modest about\" about Clement Attlee, Opposition MP -- \"He is like a sheep in sheep's clothing\" also about Clement Attlee -- \"He has all the virtues I dislike and not the vices I like\" about Stafford Cripps, Opposition MP Churchill was pathologically disdainful of India and Indians with derogatory remarks, many times nasty, and had a rabid animosity against Gandhiji. He was pugnacious, haughty and an egoist, but was a brilliant orator and a great historian (I think he wrote 16 volumes of history). He used to dictate between 10 Pm and 2 AM with a cigar in one hand and a glass of whiskey in the other either standing or pacing up and down the room- received Nobel Prize for literature in 1953. As far back as we can remember, we have tried to explain natural phenomena through science and medicine. Knowing how things work makes us feel comfortable. This is something science helps us to do. As science has developed, our lifespan has increased, diseases have been eradicated, the infant mortality rate has decreased, while the effect of all this on the environment is debatable, but there is no question that people are a lot healthier and happier today, thanks to scientific developments. Science has progressed a lot since 1796, when Homeopathy came into existence and now people are believing in scientific reasoning. The effectiveness of any treatment in any system of medicine needs to be proved by proper research that eliminates biases and provides objective evidence that the treatment actually works for a large group of patients. According to the Homeopathic belief \"remedy to an ailment produces symptoms which are similar to the ailment itself.\" For instance, coffee acts as a stimulant and makes a person more energetic and prevents them from sleeping. According to Homeopathic bizarre explanation, a person who is suffering from restlessness can be cured by administering coffee (which produces symptoms similar to that of the ailment). How can the public be so gullible to believe that coffee, a universally known stimulant can be used to cure insomnia and restlessness? A Homeopathic preparation of coffee, is sold as a sleep causing agent under the name \"Coffea Cruda\" to make insomniac sleep!! In modern medicine scientific method is based on testing the validity of hypotheses. Rigorously testing a hypothesis in such a way that it can be proved or disproved, ensuring all other confounding factors are excluded, and using large enough data sets that any random variations become insignificant. This scientific principle is what modern medicine is based on. Homeopathy has unfortunately failed to produce such objective evidence. Anecdotal success of few patients does not imply that the homeopathic medicine will work for all. The success could be due to a placebo effect or the natural course of disease. Any system of medicine should be comprehensive and should offer solutions to acute and chronic disease. Unfortunately homeopathy P 26
..................................................................................... doesn't help any of the acute emergencies like trauma or heart attacks and it is yet to be seen evidence that it alters the natural course of chronic diseases. A data driven scientific system should always show the actual impact on the patients' survival, but in homeopathy it is never an issue, because it is not a science based data driven entity. Take for example pediatric cancers, five decades back less than 10% of children with cancer survived, now more than 80% do. This is objectively documented over the years. Homeopathy has been unable to show such evidence of effectiveness of their treatment. We have moved from the physical examination to the molecular world of telemedicine, whereas homeopathy continues to languish in the medieval era of dilutions. The scientific rationale for how homeopathy works is yet to be proved. India's first Veterinary Homeopathy course started in Kerala Veterinary and Animal Science University, Trichur. The course content aims at imparting basic knowledge about homeopathy and the remedy of certain ailments. It is a pre-designed course in homeopathy for Veterinary Practitioners. Valid question is, can Veterinary medicine be combined with homeopathy? Combining two different therapies can make it difficult to determine which one is working well or whether the different treatments are interfering or nullifying each other. Some of the disadvantages in mixing non science based homeopathic medicine with science based data driven treatment method includes, treating chronic conditions can take a longer time to heal. If you are looking for a \"quick fix\", a homeopathic approach is not feasible. Homeopathy is not a solution for every medical condition, for instance it's not an option for traumas such as broken bones. Homeopathy for pets sometimes means less convenient treatment, you may have a large number of supplements that have to be administered in specific ways. So most of the Veterinarians are reluctant to endorse this idea. Doctors are divided because some of the theories behind homeopathy don't lineup with the principles of Chemistry and physics. Scientists argue that a medicine with no active ingredient shouldn't have any effect on the body. A look at the principles of homeopathy in veterinary or human Medicine will help us to decide by ourselves whether homeopathy is pseudoscience or not. Misleading information about homeopathy continues to be presented at major continuing education conferences and appear in niche alternative veterinary journals, which helps to create doubt about the scientific evidence concerning this practice. Attempts by regulators and professional organizations to discourage the use of homeopathy had mixed results, thanks to vigorous lobbying against the scientific consensus by a vocal minority. Therefore, a brief evidence-based overview of Veterinary homeopathy may be required for Veterinary Professionals. Lack of Scientific evidence about the efficiency of homeopathy itself shows that it is not a science based treatment option. As in the case of homeopathy an evidence-based medicine is always about a flexible and probabilistic understanding and absolute, immutable conclusions are anathema to the core principles of medicine. Evaluating homeopathy at every level--from biologic plausibility to preclinical and in vitro r esearch to clinical P 27
..................................................................................... Trials -- leads to as confident a conclusion as science can ever muster. Even dedicated proponents of homeopathy are unable to find high-quality research evidence for the practice when they apply accepted methods of evaluating the literature. The worst it can do is mislead people into thinking that there are no side effects in Homeopathy. The correct statement would be that there are no effects at all. In the 17th century, Samuel Christian Hahnemann, a German Physician unable to find answers with the limited understanding of modern medicine as it existed then, invented homeopathy. This invention was before the systematic pharmacological study of drug safety and efficacy existed, and even before the knowledge of anatomy and physiology in its present form. After multiple failed experiments, he stumbled upon \"quinine\" containing cinchona tree bark, which was discovered before the 1570s as a muscle relaxant. He later used it to treat malaria and malaria-like symptoms, oblivious to the other side effects and contraindications of this drug he developed the first law of homeopathy. In order to determine whether homeopathy is a pseudoscience or not, we need to examine the basic laws of Homeopathy. 1. The Law of Similia Similibus Curantur (Let likes be cured by likes). This is also referred to as the law of similitude. Drugs causing symptoms that mimic a specific disease can be used to treat diseases that cause the same symptoms. 2. The Law of Single Remedy: This archaic theory states that a prescription shouldn't be made up of more than one remedy at one point of time. If that doesn't work, one should move on to the next remedy. If multiple treatments are given at the same time, it becomes difficult to conclude which one cured the condition. 3. The Law of Minimum Dose: This atrocious law states that one should take the smallest dose to nudge one's vital force to start the healing process. Hahnemann believed that healing should be \"rapid and permanent.\" To use too much of a remedy frequently causes an aggravation of symptoms before any improvement is seen, thereby putting the individual off the modality. 4. The Law of Direction of Cure: This ridiculously outdated theory states that if a disease is left untreated it moves in the opposite direction. 5. The Law of infinitesimal Doses: Under this law, homeopathy claims that when drugs such as an extract from the Cinchona tree bark is diluted in water or alcohol, they increase their potential. Treatment effect and placebo theory: Diluted liquid, mostly water or alcohol is poured over small glucose balls that are to be consumed several times a day with a practice of validation through repetition of 4-5 doses a day, P 28
..................................................................................... that may induce placebo-like effect. Something that may be holding the value of homeopathy till this date. Several highly reputable scientific journals published studies that confirm time and again that the homeopathy method of treatment may work as a placebo and there may not be any scientific basis. Theory of Succussion: Hahnemann, who established homeopathy insisted upon the application of specific procedures during the preparation of his potions and these are followed to this day. These procedures include most importantly \"succussions\", the vigorous shaking of the diluted preparations, apparently made in a mixture of alcohol or distilled water. He observed in the course of his preliminary experiments that this procedure of vigorous shaking greatly increased the potency of his potions. This is another nonscience based bizarre thinking still prevails. What is the history of Homeopathy in Veterinary Medicine? Veterinarians in the nineteenth Century used homeopathic texts that were specially developed for their profession. In the latter years of the nineteenth century, homeopathy began to decline in popularity with the development of the pharmaceutical industry. Homeopathy has been undergoing resurgence since the middle of The twentieth century as animal owners and veterinarians alike explore it as a way beyond the limitations of conventional medicine. Given the scientific conclusion, it seems clear homeopathy can have no legitimate role in modern veterinary medicine. A number of regulators and professional organizations have recognized this and taken action. The Federal TradeCommission (FTC) and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently issued statements warning the public that claims for the safety and efficiency of homeopathy are not supported by science. In the veterinary field, the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA), British Veterinary Association (BVA) and the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) all have clear policy statements acknowledging homeopathy is ineffective and discourages the use. Numerous specialty colleges in the U.S and abroad have issued similar statements. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), unfortunately, declined to adopt a clear stand, in spite of finding from its own council on research that, \"there is no clinical evidence to support the use of homeopathic remedies for treatment or prevention of disease in animals.” The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) oversees homeopathic remedies, but it doesn't check to see if they're safe or effective. In general, most of the homeopathic medications are so watered down that they don't cause any side effects, but there are exceptions. Homeopathic medicines can contain a large amount of active ingredients like heavy metals, which can be dangerous. In 2016, FDA issued a warning against using homeopathic teething tablets and gels because of possible health risks to infants and children. P 29
..................................................................................... Importance of Ethics in practicing Science based Veterinary Medicine: Ethics are rules and standards that govern proper conduct based on what is considered to be morally good or bad. A moral is simply of, or relating to, what a person believes is right or wrong. Ethical consideration of issues is an important tool for society to use and focuses on what is acceptable and what is not within a particular framework. Ethical theory is very much varied and when the term is used in the veterinary context, it usually refers to a consequentialist or value driven base. Ethical analysis is there to help provide us with a way of considering our actions and the impact this may have not only on our patients, but also on their owners and on society as a whole. Jerrold Tannenbaum's book \"Veterinary Ethics-Animal Welfare,Client Relations,Competition and Collegiality\" defines animal ethics as the moral obligation that people have for animals, while veterinary ethics relate to veterinarians. The book defines the ethics in descriptive terms as values or standards of the profession outlining what is acceptable behavior determined by peers. The Veterinarian's Oath is an example. Veterinary, client-patient relationship (VCPR) is a cornerstone ethical and legal concept in veterinary medicine. A valid VCPR exists when a veterinarian is intimately aware of a patient's health status. Such an intimate connection cannot occur virtually or over the phone. Thus it is absolutely crucial to note that a valid VCPR cannot occur without a Veterinarian examining an animal hands-on. It is unethical to offer clients ineffective remedies and even though homoeopathic treatment themselves may do no harm, they can mislead clients and discourage the use of truly effective treatment. P 30

..................................................................................... Toffee: My Guinea Pig Nandana Nambiar (D/o Dr. Satheesh Chencheri) It was a typical winter day here in Shoreview, Minnesota. It was snowing outside, in great flakes, and I was planning to go sledding. It was around 10 in the morning when my dad called from work. I was confused. My dad never called from work and this he was even Facetimeing, which he never does. I answered the phone. \"Hi Acha.\" I said. \"Hi Nandana. Do you want a guinea pig?\" he asked. My mom came over. \"What's wrong?\" she asked. \"Acha asked if I wanted a guinea pig and I do. Can we please get one?\" My mom thought for a while. \"Ok.\" she finally agreed. \"But on one condition, you must take care of it.\" \"Of course!\" The rest of the day all I thought of was getting a guinea pig. Once evening arrived my dad came home with the guinea pig. We welcomed her into our house. \"What is her name? What's her name?\" my sister kept asking. \"Toffee,\" I said. \"Toffee.\" Set-Up The first thing we did was set up the cage. Different types of cages have different ways of assembling it. Once that was finished we put in the bedding. We also added the hay, water, food bowl, pellets, and a hut for hiding. Then with the help of my dad, we put Toffee inside her new home. Food Toffee eats a ton of food each day, so it is my job to give lots of food to her. She will eat a variety of greens including lettuce, brussel sprouts, spinach, beans, carrots and beetroot, lettuce begging her favorite. She will eat that anytime we give it to her even though she is picky. Toffee can't make her own Vitamin C so I make sure to give her a couple of orange slices a week. If we don't have oranges at home, then I will give her a Vitamin C tablet. My dad buys the Vitamin C tablets, the pellets, and hay from our local pet store. Cleaning We clean Toffee's cage once a week or atleast once in ten days. First we take Toffee out and let my sister play with her. We also take out anything in the cage. Then we remove the upper level and staircase from the top part of the cage and then we take out the top part of the cage. Using disposable gloves we pick up the bedding and waste and put them into a trash bag and throw it in the trash. After the bedding and waste is removed, we take the base, the upper level, and the staircase to wash it with water. We then wipe them down with a paper towel and add clean bedding to the base. We put back on the top part, the upper level and staircase. Then we put back in the hut and food bowl. Finally we put Toffee back into her clean home. Grooming Grooming is something that we do about once a month. When we groom, we cut Toffee's nails and brush her fur. We usually cut her nails first. I hold Toffee while my dad cuts her nails. Only he is allowed to cut her nails in our family because we don't want Toffee to get hurt. There is a part of her nail called the quick. If we accidentally cut into the quick, she will start bleeding and it will hurt her. We also brush her fur. Doing this just gets out all the extra fur. My dad bought the supplies from our pet store. Playtime We take Toffee out of her cage every time we have to clean her cage. We let her explore a bit and I make sure she is in arms reach. I don't let her go near corners because she might pee there. Normally though I keep her on my lap and pet her. As a reward for letting me take her out, I give some treats which she happily munches on while sitting on my lap. My Toffee is a cute guinea pig who loves getting attention from us. She is a black Abyssinian guinea pig. Her favorite food is lettuce and oranges. Her hobbies are eating, sleeping, and playing. Her most prized possession is the blanket she came home in. Her best friend is me and she is also my bestie. P 34

..................................................................................... George Vergheese Keep your Ship Afloat Some of my friends were asking me to write an article for our e- magazine for the lasttwo years and I had been postponing this due to one reason or the other. Finally, I am making an attempt this year. On February 1st of 2021, Monday, we had a new client in my clinic with a five year old Lab. The owner shared that she did not have any medical records even though she was promptly taking care of the pet with regular visits to the Vet’s office every year. She noted that her Vet just closed the clinic and no records are available. My assistant had asked for the name of the hospital so that we could make an attempt for the medical records. The owner gave us the details of the hospital and I recognized that name. My memories went back 21 years… I had just immigrated to the U.S., and I was trying for a job as a Veterinary Technician to start somewhere to begin a new life in this country. Back in the day, I would use ‘Yellow Pages’ of the Verizon telephone directory to identify and call the Vets in the area to see whether anyone was looking for a Vet Technician. I started calling the Vets with Indian last names in the area and I must have called six or seven of them and there was no positive response from anyone. I then decided to not just call only the Vets with Indian last names. After a couple of weeks, I saw an advertisement in the Washington Post. The advertisement was for the post of a Veterinary Technician at this hospital that my client just gave me. The owner was an Indian Vet. I remembered calling that hospital 21 years ago for an interview and was given an interview date. I had a meeting with another Indian Vet who was running a clinic close to my residence. I did mention about this upcoming interview and this neighborhood Vet who happened to be friends with the owner of the hospital (I was going the next day) offered to give him a call. To my surprise, the owner of the hospital told this neighborhood Vet that therewas no opening at this time. While I was perplexed with that response, I still went for the interview as planned. I was asked to be there for the interview at 11:30AM. I promptly arrived 10 minutes before the scheduled time and was asked to wait. I waited a total of 90 minutes and around 1PM, I was asked to go in and meet the Veterinarian. The doctor asked for my resume and during the conversation he said “I cannot let you go anywhere near my animals. If you want I can give you a part-time job to clean the cages”. He also said “you won’t get a job as a Veterinary Technician if you flash this resume”. P 37
..................................................................................... My resume at that time was inclusive of my specialized training in surgical and non-surgical embryo transplant at Texas A&M University that I completed in 1981. While this was not the only discouraging incident I faced as an immigrant Veterinarian, this interview, in particular, was one of the incidents that discouraged me quite a bit. These types of incidents have fueled the fire in me where I have gathered my strength to achieve my goal of passing the National Board Exam. An entire sea of water cannot sink a ship unless that sea water gets inside the ship. The negativity of the world cannot put you down unless you allow it to get inside you. If you cannot control what is happening around you, challenge yourself to control how you respond to what is happening. In all the discouragement I had received in the early days as an immigrant Veterinarian, there were a few people (very few) who offered a word of encouragement and a helping hand. Among those who motivated me, I have to mention Dr. A.P. Radhakrishnan, who was in New Jersey at that time. He is retired now and is living in California. Dr. Radhakrishnan was 4-5 years senior to me. We had known each other from our days in Kerala. Immediately after I had immigrated to this country (in 1999), I lost my father within the first 3 months and that was a quite an impactful incident in my life. I had started preparing for the National Board Exam (NBE) but was not quite ready to take the exam in December of 1999 and was planning to attempt in April 2000. At that time, the NBE/CCT exams were conducted 2 times a year - in April and December. I was in contact with Dr. Radhakrishnan and I told him that I am unable to focus on my studies after I lost my father and that I planned to take the exam in April 2000. But Dr. Radhakrishnan insisted that I take the exam in December 1999. He had asked me to go to his house in New Jersey so that he could take me to the examination center in Philadelphia. He told me that his son was also taking the same exam in December. Character is how you treat those even when you know that they cannot help you back. Now looking back, I am glad I took his advice and appeared for the exam in December 1999. I was not prepared and failed, quite miserably. But that gave me the confidence that I could make it and it is not an impossibility as some of the Vets had told me. My humble advice to the Vets who are planning or preparing for the Board Exam is to ignore the negativity, focus on your goals and move on with confidence. Success is a slow process, quitting is not going to speed it up. All the best! P 38

Home ..................................................... Slowly slowly I knitted together the threads with the tiny fingers. I assembled the thoughts, poured the warmth and sweat And built a sweet home. Then, There came the next days. Where I didn’t have any plan. That, a home could fall apart, to collapse and dismember to null. And, I could get orphaned, very much in the home. But it happened. I got confused when to cry. And, it recurred.
