2022 ANNUAL IMPACT REPORT
01 2022 ANNUAL IMPACT REPORT Dear Friends of Damien High School, It is my pleasure to provide insights into the work that continues to be accomplished in support of our mission at Damien High School. As we collectively navigate the aftermath of the pandemic, financial and social challenges remain for several our students and families. This reality has served to fortify our goals to meet these challenges and ensure that our Spartan community continues to receive the support needed to fulfill our mission. Thankfully, we showed growth in donations and grants this past year, increasing the number of individual donors by 107% year over year and increasing total giving by 49% year over year. While we were able to secure more donations, we also saw an increase in our operational costs due to economic changes and a greater need for tuition assistance among our families. Indeed, the number of families receiving tuition assistance, which has averaged 30% of our student population, has increase to nearly 49% in 2021/2022. This past year, Damien High School provided just over one million dollars in tuition assistance. We were able to do so with the help of our individual donors, foundation grants, and trusts that continue to bless Damien. Last year, we also completed a financial audit for our school. This formal review had not been conducted in many years and I am happy to report that the recent audit was a success. As is normal for audits and reviews, we were provided with insight into how we could improve, and we quickly implemented suggested changes. The importance of the audit was twofold. Primarily, the audit serves to provide a thorough understanding our school’s financial position. Secondly, the review allows the school to provide audited financial statements to philanthropic foundations, which are required as part of their grant applications. In short, audited financial records open up new opportunities for foundation philanthropy, which can benefit Damien High School through program, construction, and tuition assistance grants. Looking ahead to the upcoming year, we are focused on developing a new strategic plan for Damien High School. This will take several months and involve multiple stakeholders in conversation to develop a pathway for our future. As a part of this process, our strategic plan will also include a review of growth opportunities in the critical areas of school operations and capital needs related to campus and academic programs. The future continues to look bright as Damien High School upholds its commitment to develop men of Service, Scholarship, and Faith. As we move forward, we remain excited to see the impact that our past, current, and future students will have on others as they go forth into the world with the values and ethics inherent within our Catholic tradition and faith. May God continue to bless each of you and thank you for your continued support of Damien High School. DR. JOE SIEGMUND ’86 DR. MIKE CASTILLO ‘00 PRESIDENT PRINCIPAL

03 WELCOME Only together can we provide our young men the inspiration to hunger for knowledge, the faith that empowers them to act with compassion and integrity, and the traditions that foster a community of family that other schools cannot know. 2022 ANNUAL IMPACT REPORT | DAMIEN HIGH SCHOOL
04 I am honored to present Damien’s 2022 annual impact report to you. Our school has been challenged like never before over the past two years and in our most uncertain of times, the resilience of our school community has shown through. Providing a Catholic education takes sacrifice and we are grateful for our parents, grandparents, alumni, and guardians who make it a reality for over 730 young men. We are grateful for the generosity of our benefactors and donors who believe and support our mission. Only together can we provide our young men the inspiration to hunger for knowledge, the faith that empowers them to act with compassion and integrity, and the traditions that foster a community of family that other schools cannot know. Thank you for your ongoing trust and care for Damien High School, please know that you are a blessing and a big piece to all that we are able to do. Blessings, FREDDY WILKENS DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT P.S. How you are doing with respect to your annual charitable giving goals? We are here to be a partner in your decision-making. 06 “As a Damien Alum …There is nothing more gratifying than seeing my son walk those same steps as I once did …I look forward to Ralph’s journey at Damien knowing he is surrounded by great mentors, teachers, and coaches that will fortify his faith, foster traditions, and inspire service. My advice to my son is to be involved, be himself, and take in the full Damien experience,” –Ralph Munoz ’94
JOHN MAHON A CALLING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE
08 Damien helped make many things possible for me. I’ve always felt this way and it is a primary reason why I have decided to hang my hat HERE for so long, to give back to the school that helped give so much to me. “I have always credited Damien HS, especially certain teachers and coaches, for helping me develop the confidence, focus and determination to be able to achieve what I did. In a previous life I nearly won the USGA Junior Amatuer golf event in 1983 the summer before the start of my senior year at Damien. This event is more or less the US national championship for boys 18 and under. I survived the 36-hole stroke play qualifying (5th place) then won my first 5 matches to make the final. I lost 1 down on the last hole to Tim Straub, who himself had lost in the final match the year before. I have been a caddy at Bandon Dunes for the last three summers, which is where the US Junior Am was held this past July. This year, I was invited to caddie in the event for a player named Jack Cantlay, the younger brother of the #4 ranked player in the world, Patrick Cantlay. Both Cantlay’s played for Servite and our Damien team has recently been playing Servite in non-league contests. Jack, shot a tournament record 28 for his back nine during the first round. He was 8-under par for that nine-hole stretch, eight 3s and one 4. He did well, tying for 4th place after qualifying and then winning his first two matches to make the Sweet Sixteen. He then lost a close match to the number 2 ranked junior in the US. The fact that my golf playing career didn’t amount to much after college (John had a scholarship to play golf for Stanford University where he completed his BA in East Asian Studies from Stan- ford. John received his MA in Education from the University of La Verne) is the result of my own decisions and preferences, but Damien helped make many things possible for me. I’ve always felt this way and it is a primary reason why I have decided to hang my hat HERE for so long, to give back to the school that helped give so much to me.” JOHN MAHON ‘84 DAMIEN GOLF COACH AND SOCIAL SCIENCE DEPARTMENT 2022 ANNUAL IMPACT REPORT | DAMIEN HIGH SCHOOL
09 Damien Athletics looks to continue to provide our student-athletes with a quality program that provides opportunities for the physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual development of its participants, players, and coaches. The new year is already off to a great start and we strive to continue to be the best. LOOKING
10 We are proud of the accomplishments of 2021-22 and look forward to see what ATHLETICS 2022-23 will bring. Last year was another successful year. Our athletics programs continue to thrive, with over 500 student-athletes participating on our teams. That represents over 75% of our student population participating in athletics. Every single Damien Varsity team maintained a cumulative team GPA of 3.0 or higher. Our teams qualified for post season competition in nine sports.Damien Athletics captured two league championships. Damien was awarded the league MVP in basketball. Our Winter season was capped with our basketball team, finishing league champions and bringing home the CIF State Division I title. We honored ten student-athletes who signed National Letters of Intent and accepted scholarships to play Division I athletics next year. The athletic department was proud to finally be able to recognize our Hall of Fame inductees from the class of 2020. Damien Alum’s Sheldon Jackson, class of 1994, Tony Reyes, class of 1979, the 2005 Soccer team, and Fr. Peadar Cronin joined the hall this year. AHEAD We are excited about some of the projects underway and or recently completed to our facilities, namely the new scoreboard at our aquatics center and upgrades to the lighting and locker rooms. A brand new locker room in the Travers-Cronin Athletic Center was just completed to house lower level programs. The baseball program was able to upgrade the facility and received new lighting in the bullpens, ordered a new scoreboard, and we are excited for a new outfield and perimeter fence that will enclose our field. All of these needed and incredible upgrades are made possible thanks to the generosity of our Damien community. JEFF GRANT ‘99 ATHLETIC DIRECTOR 2022 ANNUAL IMPACT REPORT | DAMIEN HIGH SCHOOL
CAMPUS MINISTRY TRUE MARY’S MERCY CENTER We have begun an ongoing effort to support Mary’s Mercy Center in San Bernardino. Founded by Fr. Michael Berry, SS. CC. this facility serves all in need in the San Bernardino area. Providing hot meals, showers, clothing, housing, and more. We are excited to continue serving!
12 RETREATS Over the last year, we have been working hard to strengthen the campus ministry program, especially the retreat program. We will be preparing to embark on our fifth Kairos in the calendar year, serving nearly 200 Spartans. We have just returned from our third Emmaus retreat in that same time, and earlier in October we conducted our first ever Freshman Adelphoi retreat. Fostering men of service, scholarship, and faith, these retreats direct our young men inward, inspiring them to ask themselves tough questions. Who am I? Who is God? Who is God, to me? This introspection empowers our young men to continuously go out into their communities, not only here on campus but to the margins, to become missionary disciples. CALLING WELCOME DN. ERIC CRUZ We are pleased to welcome Dn. Eric – when he joins us he will be Fr. Eric SS.CC. – to the Damien community and the Campus ministry team, as our school’s new Chaplain. After his ordination in January, Dn. Eric will join us full time as our Chaplain, providing regular confession opportunities, mass, and spiritual direction for our students and staff. As this is his first full time assignment, he is very excited to be joining us! 2022 ANNUAL IMPACT REPORT | DAMIEN HIGH SCHOOL

FACES LIKE MINE “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” -Ephesians 4:2-3
20 MEET JEREMY We are one of the faces that receive support from Damien High School’s financial aid program. As you can see, we are a traditional middle class family of 5 until one day, unexpectedly, we lost our beloved wife and mother. One of her dreams was to send our son, Jeremy, to Damien High School. Due to the financial aid program, we are able to fulfill one of our family’s dreams. Our family wants to truly thank all of the donors who help support the financial aid program at Damien High School. Without it, our son would not have been able to become a Spartan. (Jeremy is currently in his freshman year with a 4.0 GPA and participates in freshman football). 2022 ANNUAL IMPACT REPORT | DAMIEN HIGH SCHOOL
MEET NOAH FACES LIKE MINE
22 “Another reason was the Catholic education … I’ve always been catholic but never experienced a catholic school. And that was something that drew me to Damien.” “I just felt I wasn’t getting all the resources I needed and supported I needed academically to be able to learn as much as possible.” Noah has thrived academically during his time here at Damien; his focus on taking advantage of the opportunities here has led to a 4.68 GPA. He has credited the expertise, diversity and genuine care displayed by the faculty as the reason Damien sets itself apart from other schools. Now, as he prepares for college, he is considering multiple academic paths he had not initially considered. “I’ll say that definitely having a lot of good teachers at Damien in a lot of different areas – teachers that care…Having it in English, having it in science, having it in theology…This whole interdisciplinary process that goes on, and making connections across disciplines, has kind of sparked an interest in me going across multiple fields so I have a lot of interest in a lot of different things so I’m looking to explore a lot in college because of Damien.” Noah’s decision to come to Damien is a testament to the experience we offer our students, as we strive to develop men of Service, Scholarship, and Faith, prepared to engage in a global society. “I feel like at a bigger school, you restrict yourself to one group of people. I felt at Damien, with all these people who are welcoming – not only the teachers but the students – you’re able to talk to a lot of different kinds of people.” 2022 ANNUAL IMPACT REPORT | DAMIEN HIGH SCHOOL
