A File in European Tapestries… The House of Aulan is a French noble dynasty dating back to 1050. They share both aristocratic and royal European lineage. Recently, the family has been known to be one of the largest Champagne families in the world with their previous ownership of the Champagne houses of Taittinger and Piper Heidsieck, with Francois de Suarez d’Aulan being dubbed the ‘King of Champagne’. Jean de Suarez d’Aulan additionally gained notoriety towards the family in Europe during the 20th century for inheriting $500 million dollars (estimated to be approximately $10.6 billion today). The family shares kinship with many European royal and aristocratic families, notably the House of Valois, House of Bourbon, and the House of Windsor. After resisting against the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V to become King of Spain the main branch of the family were forced to escape from Spain to France, losing their vast powers in Spain consisting of palaces, castles, land, their private army, Spanish influence, and their titles, most notably the title of Duke of Feria. They were given the title of \"Marquis d'Aulan\", and \"Count d'Aulan (from the title \" Count of the Baronie \"). Direct eldest male heirs were usually given the title of Count or simply Prince étranger, and would later inherit the higher title of Marquis.
On January 2, 1492, the last Muslim ruler in Iberia, Emir Muhammad XII of Granada, known as Boabdil to the Spanish, surrendered complete control of the Emirate of Granada to Fernando V(family relative) and Isabella I of Castille 'The Catholic Monarchs' (Spanish: Los Reyes Católicos) after the last battle of the Granada War. Don Fernando Suarez de Figueroa who led the army was given by King Fernando V of Aragon the title of Duke de Feria and ranked him a Grande of Spain (Spanish: Grandes de España ). On April 15, 1517 The Emperor Charles V ( 1500–1558 ) (Charles V) of Holy Roman Empire, decided to exile Don Fernando's grandson, Don Juan Suarez de Figueroa who did not agree with the rest of his family to vote in favor of him in the parliament ( Spanish: Cortes ) as ruler of the Spanish Kingdom ( 1516–1556 ). After settling in the Kingdom of France, King Francois I of France ( 1494–1547 )(Francis I of France ) gave Don Juan Suarez de Figueroa the 1st title of Marquis d'Aulan in 1532 and related properties through his marriage with Isabeau de L'Espine. The castle d'Aulan, built in the 11th century, surrounded by 2000 acres in the Drome district of Provence shows some of the art collection of the Family as well as their French and Spanish roots testimony. Part of the castle is open to the public as a museum. The 4th Marquis, Henri de Suarez d'Aulan ( 1704–1775 ),(Henri de Suarez d'Aulan) was Marshall of the Kingdom of France and King Louis XVI appointed Governor of the island of Ré ( English: Isle of Rhé ) Île de Ré one of the most strategic point of defense of the country during pre-‐revolutionary period. The 9th Marquis Jean de Suarez d'Aulan ( 1900–1944 ), (Jean de Suarez d'Aulan) was a famous French resistant and pilot in the famous French and American Lafayette squadron ( French: Lafayette escadrille ) Lafayette escadrille during the II World War as well as President and owner of prestigious Champagne House Piper-‐ Heidsieck. Jean died in his Republic P-‐47 plane during aerial combat in Heidwiller (Alsace, France) on October 8, 1944. He was the oldest fighter pilot of the Second World War and one of the very few French pilots to be awarded the English Victoria Cross and the French Légion d'honneur for his dedication during combats. The family has been invested in the alcohol industry since the late 18th century particularly with well-‐known and prestigious champagne houses Piper Heidsieck and Taittinger as well as other ventures. The de Suarez d’Aulan noble family has been known to be extremely affluent and powerful throughout the second millennium and to have had impacts on European history in France, Spain, Bohemia,and Great Britain. According to records held in the
Archives municipales et Musée du Mont de Piété the Aulan family are cousins to certain members of the Bourbon family, notably the archives claim Aulan kindred to Henry IV of France. These relations to the House of Bourbon were established when the genesis family (House of Suarez) were attaining masses of power in Spain during the 15th-‐16th century and were making allies of other powerful European households through marriage. When a branch of the family was forced to flee Spain due to civil disruptions, the House of Bourbon gifted the cousin family refuge as well as new lands in France and a new title and name (House of Aulan), these being the family's principle titles, Marquis de Suarez d’Aulan and Count de Suarez d’Aulan. The family originates its English ancestry from the House of Beaumont which was originally a Norman family. The origins of the Anglo-‐Norman part of the family are said to be from the Viking conquests which first formed Normandy. Other English familial relations includes, cousinhood of the Duke of Abercorn, as well as numerous other English nobility. The family has many links to royal and aristocratic families across Europe as well as other powerful leading families within Europe. The family is widely considered to be one of the most historically important, old, and powerful aristocratic families in Europe.
