Festival name : Grape Harvesting Festival (F.Kaya's class) Where :Some of Turkey's coastal and central towns have festivals to celebrate the grape harvest when:Traditionally, this takes place in early fall, but as the harvest date depends on how ripe the grapes are, some grape harvest festivals may take place in late August or even October. why : To celebrate the arrival of fall what happens : Bunches of grapes are placed in large baskets after the vines are cut with scissors and knives. These grapes are made \"pekmez\" (molasses-like syrup made from the boiled down juices of grapes) or wine. Festival name : Kakava Feast Where: Edirne, Kırklareli When: 5th-6th May Why: The belief that a Savior Baba Fingo would come and rescue them because the Savior Baba Fingo is immortal. Turkish Romani people go down to the edge of the river Tundzha, at the night of 5-6 May that they decided as the day \"Rescue Event\" happened. What happens: They put candles in the River and wash their hands, face and feet in the water, for the memory of the miraculous day. The main source of joy is the immortality of the Savior Baba Fingo. For that reason, they entertain madly. Special food: Rice dish ''Pilav''

It is made with nine fasting materials and after being read and cut into forty pieces it is distributed to the faithful people. special food: Fanouropita

Festival name: The ”Goat” Tradition Where: Romania, most of the villages When: December Why:To chase away the evil forces and to begin a fresh New Year with positivity What happens: Men and boys with drums and brass instruments wander through villages playing their traditional music, as one man - dressed in a stylized goat costume - performs a sort of goat dance. Besides the goat costumes , there are other costumes as well, like bears, or horses. The carolers wearing grotesque masks come with large bells, drums and whips and start dancing and making loud noises intended to scare away the evil forces. These masks are very popular among visitors , as they make great souvenirs from Romania. special food : beef tripe soupe (ciorbă de burtă), doughnut and cream (papanași) chicken/beef salad (salată de boeuf), sweet bread (cozonac)

Festival name : Epiphany Where : Italy (all regions) When : 6th January Why : It is said that on this day the Magi Kings, coming from the far east and following a comet, brought three gifts to the new born Jesus: gold, incense and myrrh What happens : In the night between 5th and 6th January \" Befana\", a witch who flies on a broom, enters people's houses to fill with sweets the stockings under the Christmas tree or hanging on the fireplace. If people, especially children, haven't behaved so well, Befana fills the stockings with charcoal! Special food : \"Purcidduzzi\" and \"Cartellate\", typical crumpets covered with honey







Festival name: Festa dos Povos Where: Chaves, Portugal When: last week of August Why: The “Festa dos Povos” intends to recreate the period when Romans used to inhabit iChaves, when Titus Flavius ruled the city. The celebration has the purpose to show the population, in a certain way, what life was like were back then. What: There are delicious gastronomic delicacies, drinks feast, Galician-Roman market, Gladiator fights simulations, mythological recreations, musical interpretations and ancestral dances. The Galician peoples, legionaries, gladiators, senators, beggars, slaves, falconers and divinities are present at the event. Festival name : Christmas & New Year Where : Romania ( class of “Lazar Edeleanu” High School; Elena & Dana) When : 24th of December – 1st of January Why: The most appreciated events of this period, when family members gather no matter from what parts of the country and spend precious time together What happens: Brasov & Sibiu are the most visited cities during this time of the year, being renown for their Christmas Fair. The goat (capra-Ro) and the bear (ursul Ro) are two traditional dances coming from archaic sacred ceremonies dedicated to the death and rebirth of divinity. The Star is another traditional custom meant to inform people about the birth of Christ: the children who walked with the 'star' disguised themselves as magicians and proclaimed the sea marvel. At first, the Christmas tree was adorned with fruit, paper flowers, or biscuits. In time, it was decorated with all sorts of wonders, including: glass balls, tinsel, chocolates, light fixtures Special food: By far, the most famous traditional Christmas dish is sarmale (meat and rice rolls wrapped in pickled cabbage leaves) served with polenta in all parts of the country.

Festival name : 15 August Where : Greece when : 15 August why :August 15 or Dekapentavgoustos is one of the most important dates in the Greek Orthodox Calendar, as the Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos is celebrated. It is a national and religious holiday that marks the “falling asleep” repose or kimisis of Panagia, mother of Lord Jesus Christ. what happens :At the peak of their summer vacation period, Greeks celebrate the Virgin Mary and the country is transformed into one big church festival. August 15 is a big day for the Greek Orthodox Church and for the people of Greece, who celebrate the Dormition of the Virgin or Assumption of Mary special food : Until August 15th, of course, it is not allowed to eat animal products and oil is only allowed to be eaten (according to our religion) on Saturday and Sunday.We can only eat fish on 6 August and the fast ends on 15 August when we eat meat unless the day falls on a Wednesday or Friday when we eat fish. So this year we are eating meat since it is Monday.We eat any kind of meat but very popular is the meat of sheep.
