Family dynamics: Domestic violence & Home Video-gaming ❖ Lockdown and social distancing measures to prevent spread of the Corona virus have heightened fears of increasing domestic violence, which includes physical, emotional and sexual abuse.

❖ Refuge, one of the UK’s domestic abuse charities, has made reports of a 25% increase in calls made to its helpline since lockdown measures were announced. ❖ The concentrated time spent in lockdown means that vulnerable people are more exposed to abuse and it is more difficult for them to seek help. ❖ In response to the increasing concerns, the UK government has published guidelines on how to recognise domestic abuse, how to report and where with a list of all the services available.

❖ In addition, a significant impact of the corona virus pandemic has been seen within the video-gaming industry. ❖ With many individuals self-isolating and/or remaining home under strict governmental regulations, online gaming has seen the emergence of record numbers of players, which has facilitated a boost in revenue for many companies. ❖ Conversely, negative impacts include cancellation of the annual and major trade event E3 2020, alongside the rescheduling and/or cancellation of popular esport leagues.

Brighter Side of Coronavirus

Cleaner Environment due to lockdown The sky, air & water in Ganga are reviving to its purest form.

Reduction in Air pollution ❖ The lock down imposed by the government to restrict the spread of novel coronavirus has also started to show a positive effect on air quality across the country. ❖ The 32-day national lockdown has started showing its positive effect on air quality across the country as big cities like Delhi and Mumbai see pollution levels drop by around 40-50%, according to data received from a European satellite system.

❖ “The significant reduction in the NO2 concentrations can be seen over major cities across India. Mumbai and Delhi saw drops of around 40-50% compared to the same time last year,” according to the European Space Agency (ESA). ❖ India’s Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) too has recently reported an improvement in air quality in the country. CPCB data suggests a nearly 71% fall in nitrogen dioxide levels. Several major cities— New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai — have witnessed a fall in the Air Quality Index (AQI)

Reduction in water Before After pollution ❖ The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) in its report submitted to the Yamuna Monitoring Committee (YMC) has also stated that the absence of industrial effluents and reduced human activities has improved the water quality of river Yamuna. ❖ The river Ganga’s water quality has improved with the increase in dissolved oxygen (DO) and reduced nitrate concentration. The tributaries of Ganga have also refined due to the concentration of DO increase during the lockdown period.

Healing of Ozone Layer ❖ An \"unprecedented\" ozone depletion in the northern hemisphere has healed, but unlikely due to the impacts of worldwide coronavirus lockdowns, scientists say. The hole had been about three times the size of Greenland. ❖ Scientists monitoring the hole at the Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Service (CAMS), a European Union earth observation program, announced the closure

New job opportunities and enhancement of national income

New job opportunities ❖ After the Coronavirus outbreak, companies are considering shifting their factories from China. A new report has claimed that 1000 foreign companies are mulling a move to India. ❖ Eg:- Casa Everz Gmbh, the owner of Germany-based healthy footwear brand Von Wellx, will be shifting its entire shoe production of over three million pairs annually in China to India with an initial investment of ₹110 crore, according to a top official of the company's licensee Iatric Industries Pvt Ltd.

Shift of Apple Industry to India ❖ One of the companies shifting to India is the famous Apple Industry. ❖ Apple has reportedly been in talks geared to shifting up to a fifth of iPhone production from China to India over the next five years. ❖ Economic Times says that up to $40 billion worth of iPhones could be made in India. ❖ The company, directly and indirectly, employs over 4.5 million people in China. ❖ So shift of Apple to India will open up huge job opportunities to Indians.

Self Reliant India

❖ Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, laid emphasis on Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India). Modi has promoted ‘Vocal about Local’ campaign to make India ‘Aatma Nirbhar’ self-reliant. There are also several measures that Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman has announced specifically for MSMEs considering the priority to local brands. ❖ Vocal for Local can form a pattern of development to create and grow a base of domestic big industry. It not only promotes the goods of Indian companies but also promotes the goods that are manufactured in India by MNCs.

❖ This would make India self -reliant and less dependent on other countries for its needs. It is for the development of Indian industries and Indian market within other countries’ market. This is a call for being “Atma-Nirbhar”. ❖ It helps in generating employment, promoting hyper-local market and hence boosting the Indian economy.

‘Lockdown appears to be a loss in short run but it is actually beneficial in long run’. We can bring out the brighter side of our fight against Corona virus by being responsible citizens of India-maintain social distance and hygiene, stay home stay safe.
