HOW THINKING INSIDE THE SQUARE CAN LEAD TO PLACES SO FAR OUTSIDE OF IT There are standard shapes of tiles, tiles that have been part of the Portuguese landscape, from the inside out, for centuries; tiles that make up a history of architecture and national identity. The story of Viúva Lamego comes through an already broken mold, forming an unparalleled path of possibility and creativity. In addition to the artistic perspective, there is a great technical rigour. The research and development component is very relevant to Viúva Lamego. Part factory, part studio, part workshop - a space without borders, made for achieving great things. 152

The “Rubber Pear” tool is used to fill the “Azulejo de Aresta”, a specific type of tile which translated means Edge Tiles, enabling a meticulous painting due to the needle at the tip. Edge tiles are tiles with raised tabs, creating tight areas that do not allow colours to blend together. An example of this technique is the Hispano-Moorish tile painting. 154

AN OPEN HOUSE FOR ARTISTS AND ARCHITECTS Viúva Lamego created another path, starting in full force during the decade of 1930, when they began to understand the possibilities of uniting artists with artisans and craftsmen. Those first artists of the time were artisans themselves, experimentalists in their own right. Learning from one another gave the factory an unparalleled know-how and the artists a creative outlet that has kept developing to this day. It is called a “virtuous circle”. That is the work they wish to be known and remembered for, investing in lasting relationships with artists and architects who explore the limits of what is possible with them - and always go back for more. 156

“Everything worthwhile takes time. It took us 170 years of know-how to get to where we are now.” 158
