A “sniffer’’ sampled for possible vapor emission around the vapor coupling while trailers were loading. Until recently, the current state of the art for vapor couplers and adapters, even with poppets, were not designed to be perfectly vapor-tight as their mating surfaces became worn. Auditors from CARB can levy fines for vapor leaks. At the San Diego terminal, leaks where found on most visits and fines totaled many thousands of dollars per visit. Fittings were frequently changed out to keep the coupling in good condition, but that did not solve the problem. To solve the problem, Steve Allred with Dixon Bayco began working with Kinder Morgan to design a dry-disconnect fitting that had redundant seals. A new fitting was developed that had stainless steel cam arms, a crank actuated poppet, and an internal seal cylinder that provided two sealing points on the truck adapter. This new fitting DBC62LVPR-300 was developed along with a matching truck adapter VR4100FNG-BAY made with a more durable Baylloy metal to prevent wear of the cam and groove section. Together these two new vapor couplings completely eliminated leaks and provided a more rugged, longer lasting vapor coupling. Marathon, and Citgo joined the effort with Kinder Morgan and now require these fittings in their petroleum terminal operations. Recently Marathon was given an award for Environmental Excellence. The industry will save hundreds of thousands of dollars with these new vapor fittings in use. This is a great example of an industry working to solve one of its difficult problems. Well done, Steve Allred and Kinder Morgan. “TACTILE FEEDBACK” IS THE SOLUTION TO NEVER BLOW A HOSE AGAIN – By Dave Palmer, OEM Channel Manager at PT While transloading over the road tankers with PTO driven pump systems, it is a “blind business”. The drivers operating these systems cannot really see what is happening, if the liquid or media being passed through the hoses is unfiltered and slowly building up, other than through limited-view sight glasses. This is especially apparent during inclement weather or at night. PT offers four models of Safety Pumping Systems that function with a four-way valve manifold. This style of pumping system allows the driver to feel resistance as they move from loading to unloading after they engage the PTO- Pump. “Tactile Feedback” lets the driver feel if there is a closed valve in the operation. This feedback prevents the driver from “hammering or dead heading” a closed valve after PTO engagement with the liquid, which many times results in a spill.
