PEDESTRIAN SAFETY The DPS is always keeping an eye out for ways to improve pedestrian safety. In recent years, many features have been added to our roads to help ensure that increased population and road use doesn't translate into a less safe city. Studies have shown that a set of rectangular rapid-flashing beacons at a crosswalk can reduce pedestrian crashes by up to 47%. DPS installed two sets of these beacons in 2020 and two more are scheduled for installation in 2021 on Hamlin Road. The beacons, along with special crosswalk markings, speed humps, midblock crossings/islands, and radar speed signs help create a safer, more pedestrian-friendly city for our residents.
