JANUARY 2020 We start this New Year as well as a new decade with a new look for our DPS Newsletter. This January, the DPS is thankful for this winter season being quite mild so far with more rain than snow. Our department is busy at work on some of the following: • The Sign Shop, Roads, Water and Meter departments are continuing work on projects that are difficult to do with a lot of snow on the ground. • The Fleet Department is busy receiving and outfitting 14 new pick up trucks at a cost of $410,447, into our fleet, as well as, liquidating vehicles that no longer meet our needs and specifications. • The Engineering department continues to wrap up last year’s private and public projects as well as preparing for this year’s construction season by working with consultants and going out to bid for many major projects. • Our Management staff has been busy recruiting for 12 positions, promoting and training 4 employees to replace the many retirements and promotions we had in 2019. We are also in the process of implementing new software with BS&A, PZE, Bluebeam and NeoGov Perform. We look forward to a productive and successful construction season in 2020. DPS NEWSLETTER
DPS Appreciation Craig Morris from 1896 Tamm called to thank DPS for the timely and efficient job they did on his street. Best they ever did. Cleared curb to curb and lightly salted. Thank You!! Resident Bill Hansen called to praise the City for the fantastic job handling the snow storm. He couldn't believe when he woke up Saturday morning to all the main roads plowed. He was amazed and thrilled. Well Done!! Phone Call Jeff Rudd received this month: Mary (who lives on Fulham) called me and wanted me and others to know how appreciative she was and how professional all the employees involved in this water shut off were. She said, she called in this morning (1/16/20) frantic over needing the water shutoff so they could make repairs. She spoke to Judy who was calm through the whole process, which she was thankful for. She also wanted to thank the Meter techs (John and Matt) who came out and located the stop box and turned off the water so they could make repairs and then came back out and turn it back on. She said everyone was nice and professional. Thank you! GREAT JOB GUYS!!! Just wanted to let you know your crews have done a great job with last weekends storms. I was over at a friends house in Waterford today and our gravel road is a whole lot better than their paved road especially with the sand that was placed today. Keep up the good work. Regards, Fred Dick
Photo of the Month 1st Place – Ken DeLeeuw Wayne Rybak responding to a broken hydrant From the National Weather Service The average temperature for January was 32.4 degrees Fahrenheit, 6.8 degrees above normal, said Steve Considine, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in White Lake Township. The tie for the warmest January in Detroit, at 36.7 degrees, first happened in 1880 and again in 1932. Third warmest is 35.3 degrees in 2006. Perseverance is the hard work you do after you get tired of doing the hard work you already did. Newt Gingrich Photos taken Saturday, \"What is interesting is not January 11, 2020 only were we mild, but we were wet, not only because of snow but quite a lot of rain,\" he said. \"The wettest day was the same day it was the hottest ... That amount of rain in one day is common in the warm season, but really uncommon to get that much in the middle of winter.\"
